Every day people get into their cars and drive off into their busy lives. For most people the first thing they do is put on their seatbelt, find that song on the radio and begin their voyage to wherever they are going. But, on this same morning there are people who don’t put that seatbelt on and are risking their lives with every mile that they travel. The statistic show that seat belts reduce the risk of serious injury or even death by 50 percent. This statistic alone should be enough to convince anyone to click that seatbelt in. Therefore, not wearing a seatbelt should be illegal because of the lives it can save, it’s quick and easy to use and it prevents individuals from being ejected from the vehicle. However, because it is America I do understand there is another side to this matter and that is our freedom of choice. The freedom that allows us to be in control of what goes on in our lives. Also there is a select percentage of the population that makes this choice because they believe that seat belts can do more damage than good. However, my research concludes that according to Hauser, “the public and even some physicians frequently express concern that safety belts themselves may cause injuries, specifically abdominal, spinal or chest injuries” (1420). There is no doubt that seat belts can cause injures but they would not be as substantial as a traumatic death. Hauser also agrees and states that “the incidence of trauma from safety belts is about 0.5% of all accidents” (1420). This here just confirms that even with evidence that seat belts can cause injury and that by making not wearing seat belts illegal and taking away your freedom to choose to it is all for the safety of the drivers of America. This decision to fringe on your freedom is not taken lightly and is backed up with years of evidence of safety evaluation and the high effectiveness of safety
