Previously Attempted Solutions There have been many people working to help with this issue. The majority of the activists working on this issue think that a sea sanctuary would be the best solution for the animals. A sea sanctuary is a netted-off area in a natural body of water. Most of the whales and dolphins have been living in captivity for many years and wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild anymore. A sea sanctuary would let them retire from performing, have less forced family groups, and have a more natural, peaceful environment for them to live in. The idea is that the sea sanctuaries would eventually be empty since there won’t be anymore breeding of the captive animals or capturing of wild animals. The Whale Sanctuary Project is looking for a …show more content…
Although this is a great idea, it’s going to take 3-5 years to build and around 20 million dollars. Also, this would only work if marine parks and aquariums agreed to release their animals into the sanctuary. Some aquariums have already released their animals. The Vancouver Aquarium has stopped keeping dolphins and whales captive. The National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland has agreed to send all of their bottlenose dolphins to a sea sanctuary. But Seaworld doesn’t want to release their whales into the sanctuary. They feel like it would cause more harm for their animals because they would be exposed to dangers that happen in the ocean and they’ve already spent a lot of time at SeaWorld and formed relationships with the humans and other whales. Although these things are true, if they were only in a small section of the ocean that would limit the amount of danger they faced. Also, they would still be in human care, so the humans could look out for their health and any dangers in their habitat. Lastly, the whales may not be attached to the other whales because they are in forced, unnatural groups. The sanctuary would allow them to form more natural family groups and be in a
Seaworld is a giant marine life theme park. The greatest attraction to these many theme park would be those killer whales. In fact, these killer whales are the face of the park. As gigant as these mammals are, seaworld is keeping them in some pretty tight quarters. Mr. Jett and Mr.Ventre says “Wild killer whales can swim a hundred miles daily as they socialize, forage, communicate, and breed. In stark contrast, with little horizontal or vertical space in their enclosures, captive orcas swim only limited distances, with most spending many hours surface resting.” The animals don't have the freedom they need. Also when taking the whales out of their natural habit the whales tend to be depressed and not as heath in that situation. They need their freedom in the big ocean blue. Bring them into the small living units, breeding whales in captivity all for the entertainment of humans. At young ages the calves are taken away from their mothers on to a new seaworld park. Mothers of the calves have even been seen denying their offspring.
Second reason why they shouldn’t be kept in a captivity. You can’t recreate on orcas natural environment. The pods sea world cannot hold 40 or more whales which are usually in a pod. If it holds 40 orcas they will make more babies and after their gonna be so much whales and the water won’t hold that much whales. Because whales are the size of bus school and is just like 40 bus
Now, Seaworld talks about the animals they rescued because of probable causes, such as illness or injury, any chance they can get, like on their website “With a legacy of animal rescue spanning more than 50 years and benefiting more than 25,000 animals, responding to wildlife in crisis is a commitment we take to heart”. Seaworld will always bring up the animals they save and the animals they give “better” lifestyles to, but what about the animals that they ripped from their family and habitat in order to make a few bucks from the american people, who, for some reason, have a weird obsession over seeing wild animals in tiny cages performing inhumane acts of torture? Well what about those animals? Those animals are forced to live in tanks no bigger than 150 ft x 80 ft and 36 ft deep. An example of one of these animals would be Tilikum. A 34 year old male Orca, who weighs 12,500 lbs and is 22 feet in length was stripped from his family in 1983 from the waters in Iceland waters with no injuries or illness. Seaworld had taken a 2 year old baby orca from his family and have kept him captive for 32 years of his life. But he isn’t the only one. According to The Whale and Dolphin Conservation organization’s website “At least 148 orcas have been taken into captivity from the wild since 1961”. 148 families have been broken, and 148 orcas have died, physically or mentally, while living in tanks equivalent to a bathtub to us . While the debate over zoos, aquariums and animal entertainment are still being talked about, These facilities should be exposed and shut
The Sea Shepherds are group of volunteers who try to protect the sea animals, and capture criminals who kill the animals without permits. Their website has many purposes, one dedicate to collect donations from the reader. Furthermore, they want to protect the ocean wildlife. The website audience includes people who want to protect the ocean, and they want to save the sea animals which will likely be extinct. They offer the audience a chance to donate, volunteer, and stay up to date with ongoing issues involving marine life. This website is outstanding because the sea shepherds host a successful website that effectively reaches out to the audience through appealing to the reader's emotions, logic, and credibility.
This argument about Orca whales is very important. The abuse that these animals go through is unbelievable and uncalled for. They face starvation, dorsal fin damage, and withdrawals from not seeing their family if they were taken from the wild. Orca whales love to play but it is hard when they are being abused. Whales in the wild have dorsal fins that stand straight up (Killer Whales Don’t Belong In Captivity). The whales at any marine park have dorsal fins that
I for one have the common sense, along with a number of you, to know that in no situation whatsoever would it be remotely acceptable to rip a child out of their helpless mothers grasp and force them to witness her own abhorrent and gory murder. This is burdens the helpless animal for the rest of its life, and obviously renders the fear of humans through the roof. Preforming disturbing and unnatural acts for the public with this onus constantly as a reminder to the whale to live in continuous fear is repulsive. In fact, former Sea World employee Jeff Ventre said, on the subject of captive whale attacks, "[The attacks] are manifestations of stress, even madness, in animals forced into miserable, unnatural conditions." Take a minute to imagine the mental toll this calamity has on these beautiful, magnificent creatures. No part of this situation is even close to being humane, and it never will be until this is tragedy is permanently put to an
Captivity is the state or period of being imprisoned, confined, or enslaved, according to Wiktionary. Every year, marine parks and aquariums, like SeaWorld, make billions of dollars through ticket sales. SeaWorld estimates about 70% of their total revenue is due to their performing killer whales (Jeffs). People visit from all over the world to encounter killer whales up close. “Their beauty and power, combined with willingness to work with humans, have made them legendary performers” (Gorman). In recent years, humans have gained the ability to tame and train these creatures. Killer whales should not be kept in captivity simply because it is cruel, unnatural, and dangerous.
The whale Tilicum who is responsible for multiple deaths of trainers is still in captivity and still performs in shows. He now has no life left in him and for hours will still sit in the same spot. This is no way to treat a living thing and in no way should wild animals like this be put into captivity. The bottom line is that these animals are living mammals and should not be put into situations where they are starved and kept in extremely small spaces to live out their lives. Companies like Sea World should no longer have whale shows and should release all of the whales that will be able to survive into the wild. Sea World would be able to survive without their whale show, and even though it is one of the biggest sources of revenue the park can make money in other endevures.
Jerry Adler in the article, Why Killer Whales Belong In The Ocean Not Seaworld suggests that seaworld trainers needs to let the whales stay in the ocean where they belong, and don't mess with them at all, because if you bring them to seaworld they are just going to want to get to know you then after a while they may kill you.
...ecting these animals. Despite this, we as human beings need to proceed to defend them from exploitation. First off, there must be a permanent ban on all commercial whaling and the best to police this ban would be the IWC. This would require the comeback of IWC under democratic conservation and legitimate; non-lethal scientific research. The sanctuaries can not only provide all these benefits but can also offer eco-control. Secondly, Japan must completely end their whale hunts in the Southern and North Pacific waters. To help increase whale populations, sanctuaries must be established; these would allow whales to feed, breed, and continue their recovery. Sanctuaries would also offer opportunities to benefits both the whale population, and American economy; such as whale watching. This would generate US revenue worldwide each year, making it worth more than whaling.
These four studies evaluated the use of marine protected areas (MPAs) as the primary tool for conservation efforts. Within Fox’s study he identifies four components that increase a MPA’s effectiveness, all of which focus on bringing together the goals of the governing bodies involved, as well those of the locals who rely on the marine systems in question for resources. The research presented by Edgar and his team presents similar findings as they identify five factors that have shown to increase the success of MPAs after they studied 87 different MPA locations. In addition to identifying the key factors that contribute to MPA success, they also identify some factors that lead to MPA failure. Halpern’s study focuses on the limitations of MPA networks and the broader scope issues that need to also be addressed in order to for MPAs to be truly effective. Halpern and his team suggest that an EBM approach may be the best solution for addressing these issues. Chuenpagdee’s research also highlights the challenges and issues surrounding the implementation of effective MPAs. The study included an in-depth look into four case studies that focused on the design stages of MPAs, and the social issues that must be taken into consideration, and how the incorporation of local communities into management efforts could lead to increases in MPA network success and sustainability. The compilation of data presented in these studies, all highlight the fact that nations are increasing the number of MPAs, in order to reach international goals of conservation, however even if the global area goals of protection are met, it is clear that the success of these protected areas will be heavily dependent upon the socioeconomic issues surrounding the impacted ...
On average, ten million people annually will take an excursion to visit whales in their natural habitat. This industry is worth 2.1 billion dollars a year according to the BBC, compared to a massive reduction of 31 million dollars and this makes it far more profitable than whaling. A researcher from the University of British Columbia reported in an interview that "This shows that we can have our whales and still benefit from them, without killing them," The whale watching industry, annually creates around 13,000 people from across the globe and this figure is constantly on the rise. Another example is the International Fund for Animal Welfare which has created a charity to try and avoid the attraction to whale meat and are trying to get people to experience whales for who they really are. This programme has been set up in Reykjavik and has over one hundred volunteers from around the world. As far as Scientific Whaling goes, there are a vast array of humane and credible alternatives which all negate the need to kill these magnificent creatures. These methods include DNA sampling which can be collected from blubber, skin which the whales shed and faecal matter. As technology is advancing, new methods of tracking and remote recording whales are becoming more available which will allow the whales movements and position to proved vital information which would be unobtainable any other way. The choice is ours, we can watch these awe inspiring magnificent or we can blow them up with explosive harpoons. I know my
... So japans whaling program needs to be stopped before there is more damage done to the population. In addition the population of dolphins living near japan are expected to reach 500 in number by 2017 if keeps up its pace at there whaling
In 1986, The International Whaling Commission (IWC) implemented a moratorium to stop commercial whaling. Many people believe that this would save the whales and end forever the industrial slaughter that had decimated the many different species. Being an animal lover and just getting back from Florida for over a year, I realized how beautiful and important the ocean and the animals that live in it are. In Florida I saw many different types of ocean species, but I have never seen a whale in real life. And that made me think. How protected are these animals? I have watched television programs about entire fleets of ships, and even a helicopter, out following whaling ships trying to sabotage their efforts in order to save as many whales as possible. What are the loopholes that these whalers are slipping through to still be able to kill these majestic creatures?
The oceans need to be protected because it is where life began and if not taken care of, life as we know it will end. When dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems are suffer and become endangered along with lives of people and of marine life. Surfrider Foundation recognizes the importance of protecting and preserving the quality and biodiversity of the world's coasts because they are truly irreplaceable. There is also historical evidence of ocean pollution being present in the past, but the problem still lingers today. Heal the Bay discovered that,“Did you know there is a DDT and PCB hot spot off the coast of Palos Verdes? This superfund site (which indicates it's one of the most polluted places in the United States), is left over from a 1930's era chemical plant. Because DDT takes so long to break down in the marine environment, it persists to this day, contaminating certain species of fish. There are also highly polluted sediments in the Long Beach area, a sign of the heavy shipping in the port. Heal the Bay works on developing effective capping and removal plans to keep those toxins from spreading” (Heal the Bay). DDT is still highly concentrated in the South Bay area and still contaminating different species of fish. Even after more than 80 years DDT, a toxic insecticide, is still very concentrated and during upwellings, DDT particles come back up and continue to harm marine life. If humans are careless about what is thrown on the floor or sprayed on lawns, it can lead to disastrous affects when it comes to the condition of the ocean's ecosystems, and can endanger life itself leading to a problem that only we can mend.
