The book of Genesis 1-11 gives us a teaching and lays a foundation for the truth that is expressed later in the bible as it makes an assumption that God is the creator of the universe and all it holds. The scriptures in this books gives an expression of God as being just, love, wrath, holy and grace. This scripture enables us to understand how we should view the world and God’s part in the creation and the recreation of the whole universe. In the scripture, God formed the universe in six days. This is evident by the words that are used. For example, in the scripture, Moses uses the word “Yom” to mean day. This word is also used at other occasions in the Bible and it literally means the twenty-four-hour day. This thus gives an assurance that …show more content…
In the book of genesis, God shows us that he gave us the gift of relationships by the creation of Adam and Eve. Eve was created from Adam’s rib. In Genesis 2:24, it says, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one flesh.” In this, we are able to see the joy of being in a relationship as Adam and Eve live in peace and harmony and they do things together. It however gets to a point when Adam and eve sin. This is the time when trouble is thus sent down to the earth and in the scripture this is seen as being the genesis of all problems (Brueggeman, (2010). When they are questioned by the Lord God, Adam puts the blame on Eve and hence Eve goes ahead to blame the serpent. This thus depicts what happens in the world today. We as human beings do not take responsibility of our own problems. After the fall of Adam, we have always put the blame on anything and anyone for all our shortcomings we always avoid the responsibility of our problems but we normally go ahead to find a way out of the consequences thereafter (Cassuto, …show more content…
This gives us a glimpse on how these came into place right from the beginning of life itself. Is we are believers of God as well as the Bible, then we should allow these teachings to give us a guidance in our lives as well as shape our world view. In this case, how we treat each other, relationships such as marriages, who we are as human beings as well as evolution should thus be affected and be based on these teachings. The Bible shows its clarity to the believers of the Word of God as it helps us understand right from the beginning, step-by-step about the love that our good Lord has for us all. It is thus my greatest prayer that we can handle all the situations in life as well as treat other people in a way that is pleasing to
From the very beginning of Genesis, in the description of the Eden story, tension arises between Eve and the divine process. Eve is tricked by the serpent to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She not only defies God and eats the fruit, she also encourages Adam to join her. This upsets God and they are both cursed. God must then confront human defiance, and the first instance comes from a woman, the very creature created to congeal Eden’s perfection.
A literature work will always portray an important message to their readers; in the case of the Bible would be its teaching values. Since there are different interpretations of messages that readers can conclude from reading the Bible; the professor William H. Bishop portrays on his article “The Genesis of Values in Genesis” the interpretation according with the Christians, “The Christian worldview is predicated upon biblical teaching and interpretation. It is the foundation for family values. These values are prevalent in the Book of Genesis and are what comprise the family unit, the decline of which is eroding the values given by God”(Bishop,2015). According with the professor, the Christians see the Genesis book as guide to learn the values of a family which is the message of this literature work piece .However, portraying a message is not what Literature is all about. Literature is a written work that would produce some type of effect on the readers. In this case, the effect is that when Christian readers will learn moral value and they will practice them in their everyday life; as professor Williams states: “The Christian worldview is a means of interpreting the world through the teachings, concepts and principles in the Bible and taking action based on that interpretation. Furthermore, it incorporates values commensurate with that worldview, for example,
The “Fall of Man” story in The Bible, better known as the “Garden of Eden “story or “Adam and Eve”, is the story of how sin entered the perfect world that God had created.According to the Genesis 3, the book and the chapter in which the story is located, God gave Adam and Eve, the only two humans ever to be created at the time, a perfect place to dwell, a paradise called the Garden of Eden . This garden contained everything they needed and it was good. They had only one condition, they could not eat from the tree that was in the center of the garden, the tree of knowledge of good and evil, because God said that if they ate it the would “ surely die”. Well one day a snake came along, or should I say Satan disguised as a snake, to tal...
The Bible holds first God’s identity and who he is, labeled as the creator. By understanding
The purpose of the creation story is not central to the Bible but serves as a prologue to the historical drama, which are the central concerns of the Bible. The narrative focus in the Bible is on the story that begins with Noah and is centered on the exodus from Egypt. The central event in the Bible is the creation of the covenant and the giving of laws and commandments. Although the creation of the world in Genesis I and the pronouncement of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 are two completely different accounts in the Bible, there lies a similar theme between them: God creates an orderly and hierarchical universe, both natural and moral.
The Hebrew Bible, better known as the Old Testament, is a collection of tomes that form part of the Biblical canon. Many scholars around the world do not think that a single author wrote the books contained in the Hebrew Bible, but rather that it represents centuries of stories frequently compiled after the events they describe . The stories were created with visions for the future, in order to allow audiences insight into communities and beliefs that were common thought during their era. The stories responded to the issues and problems of their time, but also addressed contemporary climates. While the stories themselves may not be true, they convey truth without needing literal readings. For example, the creation stories in Genesis, portray God as creating the universe, and while this is considered as not ‘literally true’; the stories communicate theological truths about mankind’s relationship with God through the eyes of Hebrew writers .
Not all relationships are necessarily good by God’s eyes. Relationships can cause one person go down the wrong path in life. For example, “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and at it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it." (Genesis 3.6). The relationship between the wife and husband allowed the husband to trust his wife; he ate the food due to the fact she ate it and believed it was okay to eat. In today 's world people watch to see if their role models, which can be family members, teachers, and celebrities, do certain acts like go out drinking or go to certain types of parties. When they see this they assume if they get away with doing this so can they. Cain and Abel had a brother relationship. By free will Cain allowed anger get to him when God saw favor in Abel’s offering but not of his (Genesis 4. 3-5). There were two main different paths Cain could take to deal with how he felt. Before he made his choice God said to him, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door.” (Genesis 4. 7). Cain had the free will to do what is right, and God tried helping him. His relationship with his brother Abel was unhealthy with the anger that led him to murder his own

The account of creation is found in the book of Genesis. Chapters one through eleven tell of how and when God created the Earth, the Heavens, all forms of life and everything else in the Universe. Genesis also tells stories Adam and Eve as well as all of their descendants. Genesis is part of the living Word of God, providing details of the character of God, the principles of man, and man’s relation to God. Most importantly, Genesis offers teachings on the natural world, human identity, human relationships, and civilization.
One definition of myth is defined as a widely held but false belief or idea. When discerning the bible and its contents a novice reader tends to think that its stories and characters are myth. The book of genesis can be considered a myth but not in the sense that it holds a false belief or idea. It can be defined as a myth because it contains a story of origin that pertains to a certain event, the creation of life. In Genesis 1-11 we see this story of origin and its transcending affect in the relationship between divinity and humanity. The two primordial stories that focus on the changing relationship between God and man are the garden of eve story and the flood story. These stories will provide pivotal points that forever
In the book of Genesis, it tells the creation story of how the world, creatures, and first humans came to be. It tells the story of how God created the heavens and the earth and eventually Adam and Eve. Later in Genesis, Eve was enticed by a serpent (The Devil), to eat from the tree God forbid them to. Following his mate, Adam did the same. God was upset but forgave them. Even though they were forgiven, he still punished them. He punished Eve by making childbirth painful and many other things. Adam, on the other hand, punishment was enduring all of what Eve had to go through. Eve eventually had two sons Cain and Abel. Unfortunately, Cain killed his brother.
The Word of God is always a sweet experience to read or listen to. Because of this sweetness, honey is poured on the pages of the Tanakh signifying that the Word of God is indeed sweet. Honey has a deeply rooted and heavenly presentation in the Jewish religion. According to Chabad.org, honey was used to make a heavenly manna that gave assistance to the Jews for forty years in the brutal desert conditions. This heavenly manna was described as a pastry fried in honey. In Judges 14:14 Samson states, "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.” This excerpt from the Bible was several centuries after the desert scene but still signifies that honey was a major part of the lives of the biblical people. This excerpt is a riddle from when Samson killed a violent lion with his bare
After reading Genesis 3, it is evident that temptations play a significant role in our lives. Sometimes we choose to follow our desires and other times we decide to do what is right. When Eve is tempted by the serpent, or Satan, to take to fruit from the tree, one can see how easy it can be to fall to temptation. Satan had been very crafty in how he got Eve to take the fruit from the tree. For instance, by disguising himself as a serpent, he was able to grab Eve’s attention since serpents were considered intelligent. However, the use of a serpent to deceive Eve is more significant than this, since serpents also symbolize swiftness and cleverness. Additionally, Satan waited until Eve was alone in order to tempt her to take the fruit, since
These questions arise from our own desires as Christians to reflect a biblically sound attitude towards sexuality and relationships. That same desire to act according to biblical scriptures is subject to opposition from today’s culture and views about sexual relationships, gender, and roles. A new definition of marriage, sexual orientation, and sexual practices is challenging our relationship with God and our view of human sexuality. Bishop John Spong defines sex and its impact on relationships: “Sex can be called at once the greatest gift to humanity and the greatest enigma of our lives. It is a gift in that is a singular joy for all beings and enigma in its destructive potential for people and their relationships.” (Spong, 1988)
At the beginning of the bible God is the creator of everything. God created a man he named Adam and God, then created Women out of Adam’s rib, Adam named Woman Eve. God said “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’, for she was taken out of a man.”Genesis 2: 23. God had given Adam and Eve the garden of Eden in which they could eat anything except for the forbidden tree of apples. The Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:16-17. The devil appeared to Eve as a serpent and made her question if God really did say that they should not eat from the knowledge tree. “You will not certainly die.” the serpent said to the woman. “for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing
