The Rise in Apathy, Cheating and Plagiarism – Understanding the Problem
Over the past ten years teachers have witnessed a drop in student preparation and a rise in apathy and cheating. Students who cheat do so from a variety of motives. Making this situation even more difficult is that faculty members do not even define plagiarism the same or punish it consistently (Howard, “Sexuality” 473). Some surveys even show that teachers simply ignore the problem or do not report plagiarism because: “they do not want to be bothered, because they think only the student who cheated is actually harmed, or because of the unpleasant bureaucracy and documentation ramifications” (Moeck 484). Alschuler and Blimling add to this list the fear of litigation, student reprisals, administrative reprimands and lack of support (124). With such diversity and outright dissention among teachers, finding solutions to these problems will require not only a common purpose but also an understanding of what may be at the heart of these issues. One potential answer lies in educating ourselves about the history and nature of plagiarism. Another potential answer lies in analyzing how so many students arrive at college ill-prepared and apathetic. Freire’s theories on banking education may explain some of these problems concerning student preparation and academic integrity.
First, we must understand the history of plagiarism and the problem many instructors have in separating original thinking from collaborative thinking (that which is influenced by those who have come before). In this final chapter, Christian Miller speaks about cheating. There is a cheating behavior that many people do for various reasons. This assumes that the cheater might not be the one who is advantaged. Most humans today cheat when the opportunities arise. In studies, it is clear that many students cheat while in college. Of the many students who cheat, only a small fraction of them get caught. In a very large group of people, it was seen that only 3 people stated that they have never cheated while in school. In one case, a student found an exam on the printer and mass distributed it to the class and the class finished the exam quickly and scored higher. Embryonic stem cell research is the medical study of cells taken from embryos before they are able to implant into a uterus. This procedure – harvesting the cells – ultimately destroys the embryo rendering it non-viable and unable to sustain life. Adult stem cell research is simply the study of stem cells harvested from adults and used in many areas of medicine. Numerous groups are opposed this sort of research because they feel it infringes on the right to life, while others do not believe that an embryo that has spent five days in a petri dish should be considered a human. Richard Wagner was born on May 22nd 1813 in Leipzig, Germany to Friedrich and Johanna Wagner. His father later died that same year in October from typhoid fever and Ludwig Geyer, who was a close friend to the family, became Wagner’s adoptive father after marrying Wagner’s mother on August 28th 1814. ½ Wagner began his formal studies in Dresden in December of 1822, but he was much less interested in school studies than he was in aspects of music and theatre. Eventually he enrolled in Leipzig University to study music in February of 1831. 3 Wagner’s first professional career was being a chorus master at a theatre in Wurzburg from 1833 to 1834. However upon return to Leipzig in 1834 he met Heinrich Laube, and became involved with the literary and political movement Junges Deutschland, and began to follow not only musical philosophies such as the rejection of the classicalism of Mozart but also a favoritism towards hedonism and sensuality, straying away from Catholic Morality. From there Wagner held many positions and traveled to many places, including musical director for a traveling theatre company where he met his future wife Christine Wilhelmine Planer, who was one of the lead singers of the company.

Game Theory was said to have been introduced by Emile Borel in 1921. Borel was a French mathematician who published papers on the theory of games. From this standpoint and according to the article “Game Theory”, Borel could have been named the “first mathematician to envision an organized system for playing games” however; evidence has shown that Borel did not develop his ideas any further. This is the reason why most historians have given credit to John Von Neumann.
Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Taxonomy has changed dramatically since the introduction of the first formal classification system in 1735. The first classification system,known as binomial nomenclature was developed by Carolus Linnaeus in the 18th century. Although Linnaeus was regarded as the father of taxonomy because of his work, Our classification system has changed significantly due to the fact that the Linnaean system was simplistic and only classified organisms based on visual/structural characteristics; in the Linnaen system there were merely 2 kingdoms (Animalia and Plantae). Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
Smoking causes respiratory problems, circulatory system difficulties, and urinary troubles strengthening the fact that smoking causes inexorable harms to the body. Although smoking may have the appearance of something that “is cool”, it causes several heath problems many of which incessant effects.
The effects of cigarette smoking can be horrifying. Smoking is dangerous not only to those who smoke, but to non-smokers and unborn children as well. Cigarette smoking is also physically and socially harming.
