Imagine if you were going to school and you found out you had to wear a school uniform every day. You would look the same as everyone else in your school, no individuality as a result of that. Students should be able to wear what they want in school and not get in trouble for that. That is why we believe that schools should not make uniforms mandatory for every student to wear. School uniforms shouldn’t be in schools because students can’t express themselves, there is no significant effect on student’s education, and they may become more prone to bullies.
Firstly, school uniforms take away student’s ability to express themselves. According to the first amendment, all individuals possess the rights to express themselves freely, and with school uniforms as a requirement that takes that privilege away from the students. According to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Office of Education Evaluation and Management, fights in middle schools nearly doubled within one year of introducing school uniforms. That shows that it develops violent behavior in students. Also, a study conducted by a Texas university revealed that school discipline incidents rose by about 12% after the introduction of uniforms to that school. Now, most people may believe that uniforms will stop bullying and fights in schools, but that statement is false because fights and other incidents rose after the introduction of uniforms to those schools. Another way that uniforms don’t benefit getting rid of bullying is a man named Tony Volk who holds a Ph.D. and is the Associate Professor at Brock University found that “There is no evidence in bullying literature that supports a reduction in violence due to school uniforms”.
