In this assignment I am going to write about socialization process and discuss about four agents of socialization, the impact of family, peer groups, the media and the school
Socialization
Method by which individuals acquire the knowledge, language, social skills, and value to adapt to the customs and roles necessary for integration into a group or community. Socialization is the process of training a child to be able to adjust, associate and live in a society. This is made possible through learning the norms and rules of the society. Socialisation takes place at different platforms such as primary, secondary and adult. The primary stage involves the socialisation of the young child in the family. School plays a role in socialization by educating the child on how to read and write to be able to perform successfully in the society. I see school as an agent of socialization as it helps the child to learn new ideas, information and knowledge that is important for the child to function properly in the society. The school helps the child to also make friend and associate with different members of the society other than the immediate family at home. As a student, I have learnt a lot in school socializing with my course mate by communicating with them and learning new ideas other than that of my family. Most of the new ideas learnt from school help me to socialize in the society. In, my opinion, school is a valuable agent of socialization.
Peers groups play a vital roles in child’s socialization by enabling the child’s to form relationship with other. Peer groups have lots of influence in a child’s life because this is the process where a child’s learns behavioral norms from peers (Macmillan, 2009, p. 17)
Mass media plays a role in socialization in child life for example comic books, video games, movies, and especially television, present a very different form of socialization than any other. Television is an influence on children from a very young age and affects their cognitive and social development. (education.com,
