On Thursday, September 15, 2016 there was a board meeting in the Education center in Philadelphia. There were seven board members on the school board meeting position; five woman, two men; two African Americans and five Caucasians. Multiple genders and ethnic groups attended the meeting and the audience were sitting in a theater setting, where as the board members were sitting facing the audience up front. It started at 4:30 p.m. and a African American man did attendance to people that were going to speak and talked about the agenda of what 's going on that evening. Also there was two people taking turns presenting sign language for anyone that was death.
Firstly, what was observed during this meeting is after the man took attendance and

Likewise, members informed the audience to do SAC so teachers, students, and parents can have a greater communication among the community. Not to mention, what was also found amusing was people talking about how they feel and got to bring up their concerns about the students education, whether the students parent, teacher or principal at the meeting. Also Aniagon donated $10,000 to the school for higher quality education for the students. Near the end of meeting, registered speakers talked for three minutes to identify organization that they wanted to represented to the members of the chairs at the school board meeting. The first speaker was a student who went to a charter school; she explained her success and why she wants, Stetson, her school to stay open. The next speaker was a parent who explains why he wants Stetson Charter School to stay open. In addition, numerous community members spoke about in need for help in quality schools and want to know what schools are being closed. Also they voiced their dislikes of the way school board functions applies to schools and cited things that needed to be done. Plus a community member inquired for a fulltime position with problemed children at the school where she works. Another community member announced displeasure for schools to be privatizing and how she is against
At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.
Education in our nation is in crisis, and in order to confront the problem we need to tackle it at the center. We need to target school boards; they control funds, education, and more or less the community. With school boards these days being counter-productive, there seems only one way to solve the problem. Get rid of school boards across the nation and provide each school with its individual power much like private schools, or initiate the creation of a nation-wide school board. With the whole nation on the same page, maybe together we can help save education, and ensure the future of our country. Only until something is done to school boards will there be a positive, productive change towards education.
Sharon’s planned “Open House” event for students, teachers and staff was met with resistance from staff, and overshadowed by the Suburban Journal Report labeling Bayou as a failing school. Some staff strongly opposed the event and stated there was no reason to return prior to the first day of school. Someone anonymously left ...
Then, the superintendent of curriculum and instruction decide to hold a meeting with the superintendent of business and the two directors. After getting to the real root cause of the issue being about a complaint from a principal at River Valley School, the directors explain that she is never satisfied with the work they attempt to do for her. Furthermore, an issue that occurred with the internet-based library catalog system at that school was with the provider’s server and has since been fixed. The superintendent of business is not happy about the meeting, nor the explanation for the complaint. However, the superintendent of curriculum and instruction is happy that the issue is aired out and
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
In the following scenario I intend to describe a possible cascading of events that may occur as a result of a principal using Glenn Singleton’s (2005, 2014) Courageous Conversations About Race to initiate teacher professional development (PD). The principal encountered the first “cascading” event during the first PD meeting, where staff engagement was limited. The principal, then, noticed a second cascading event during the following PD when several disgruntled teachers made a subliminal protest by simultaneously taking a personal day to avoid participation in the equity PD meeting. In fact, the absent teachers had made the other staff members aware of their silent
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. Also he also talked about the budget for next year. After that they had a discussion with the
What is the board member most proud of about their school system and in their service to the school system?
The PTO of the school realizes that the school is in need of parent support and involvement. There is not enough parent support to develop a wholesome committee. The school is still in need of a Vice President and Secretary to operate the committee successfully. Although administration and teachers are involved in this organization, parents should be also, as the PTO primary goals are to promote child welfare in the home, school, and community. Looking at the community involvement from the PTO viewpoint more support is needed from the community also. Nevertheless, they extend their invitation to local business and non-parent supporters surrounding the school to have their voice and opinion heard concerning school and community issues, but there are...
Often when I walk into a meeting on educational issues I am reminded that I am black. My race is salient at these meetings because the room is predictably and overwhelmingly comprised of white people with few (3-5) people of color. This is the norm. My initial scanning of the room always reveals this disheartening reality. Scanning the room is not done to find “black allies”, but to have a pulse on whose voices are being heard in these discussions. It comes from a sincere place of wanting sound representation of the diverse views and opinions these students, communities, and families that are often missing from education reform.
For my project, I did many different activities. The first activity I completed was observing a Davidson County School Board meeting on the topic of an information breach that occurred. The next activity I completed was collecting trash around the Ledford High School campus on two different occasions. Then I was a buddy for a Special Olympics athlete when it was held at Ledford. Finally, I was a buddy for multiple athletes at the Miracle League of High Point.
The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion ( Asst. Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board Member), Shane Oschman (Board Member), and Joseph Troutman (Board Member). Three members of the board were missing; however because of where the seats were located I could not see who was missing. Also, the member did not introduce themselves and left before people could address them.
In order to be an effective school, all school personnel must work together in a friendly, caring, polite, and respectful manner. There are a number of positions and employees in a school. “A school is a complex social system, and all the people in it contribute to making it run smoothly” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p. 182). It’s important to acknowledge the contributions of all staff and faculty members. The principal, leader of the school is the ...
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
To write a reflection paper about the whole TESOL project for the past one and a half years is not a difficult thing for me because I never regret my choice to study in Alliant International University and learning master’s TESOL program here. With completing the master’s TESOL program, I was be able to benefit a variety of new things from different courses, as well as refresh my memory on thing that I already knew.
