I attended the District 87 School Board meeting on October 14th, 2015. The members that were present were board members James Almeda, Tammy Houtzel, Jennifer Sedbrook, Judith Webster, Mark Wylie, Mary Yount, and John Dirks, the Board President. The members present from the administrative staff were Dr. Herschel Hannah, Cindy Helmers, David Wood, and Dr. Barry Reilley, the District 87 Superintendent. Only one member of the board were people of color. There were little to no community members at the meeting. As a result, it can be concluded that the community interaction for this meeting was largely inert. All who attended the meeting were there for a specific purpose, such as giving a presentation, announcing the audit, and serving as a student …show more content…
The members of the board detailed school-sponsored events that they have attended since the board last met and applauded other members of the board for their work in such programs. The audit for the 2014-2015 school year was discussed in full detail and a group of teachers presented a program designed to help low-achieving students reach their full potential. Lastly, the board discussed the approval of the Human Resources Report, bills, the FOIA Report, Payroll, Food Service Agreement with Boy’s and Girl’s Club, and the BHS Dance Team Trip. All of these were unanimously approved. I believe that the agenda was appropriate for the items that needed to be addressed. The meeting was conducted in a timely manner through the items that needed to be discussed were …show more content…
This type of unanimous voting is also synonymous with an inert school board. These members, based on their actions, seem to take on the “delegate” role. None of the members came across as politically minded or individually minded. All members seemed to act in favor of the public’s interest. Dr. Reilly, the district Superintendent, can be seen the same way. He acted as a delegate; he was very respectful of his board members and listened to their concerns. Dr. Reilly knew that he was not the sole voice during the meeting and allowed others to voice their opinions. He did not act as a politico and only share information with certain board members to insure that the board voted according to his agenda. He as did not seem to believe that he “knows what is best for the district" as is expected as a
At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.
The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. Although I
Attending an NA meeting during finals was one of my smarter decisions, as I procrastinate my work until the very last minute this week. However, in my opinion, going to a meeting was a good type of procrastination compared to other things I could be doing. Instead of going with the same friend this time, I asked a friend who was struggling with a ________ addiction. Not knowing that I was aware of his addiction, I asked him to join so I didn’t have to go alone; and he was more than happy to join me. I was very happy he agreed to join, because hopefully it helps him with his personal addiction, and he continues to return to the meetings.
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. Also he also talked about the budget for next year. After that they had a discussion with the
This is a reflective essay based on my attendance at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting whilst on my two-week placement at a local mental health day hospital. The aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of the multidisciplinary team within the mental health environment and discuss factors that can influence the success or failure of multidisciplinary teams.
“We question why this trustee is working against the students he is supposed to represent...the call to remove politicitions who are no longer meeting the needs of the people they represent [is a time honored tradition]...we the board to start removal pocedures against this individual.”
I chose the October 27th board meeting. Right away I could tell that the members on the board were clearly articulate educators at various schools in Fayette County. I couldn’t unfortunately hear the names of the individual members on the board. There was 2 people who ended up addressing the board. One a reverend who had issue with the math scores that the district had which were novice. He was also unhappy that 40% of students in the district made a novice in reading. He didn’t like that 2/3rds of the African American students couldn’t read on grade level. He had a lot of support from the crowd as he got a lot of applause and he even had some people on the school board nodding in agreement.
The CEO, Roy Hollis ran and lead the meeting, he used an open style of communication, actively listened, asked thoughtful questions of each department, and displayed a strong yet empathetic style of leadership. All the members in the meeting participated and gave the status updates of their departments the number of expected upcoming discharges for the day, new patient admissions, patients who would be attending the hospitals Intensive Outpatient Program, along with potential areas of business development through outreach to surrounding hospitals and doctors in the city. The meeting was run in an extremely professional, respectful, and empathetic manner. I found the meeting extremely fascinating and sitting in on it allowed me to have a complete perspective of how the hospital operates, and the functions and roles that each department plays within the
I attended a Board of Education meeting on May 3, 2017. The meeting had a published agenda that was available on the website ahead of the meeting. A press release of the meeting was sent to local newspapers and uploaded to the school districts website on April 27th. The meeting began on time and started with the pledge and the call to order. The meeting then went into closed session so the Board of Education members could speak with legal counsel.
James Rosso asked if anyone opposed. The students and parents present said "aye" in unison and tried to talk over board members as they continued with the meeting. That led to testy moments. One parent suggested aloud that "parent involvement means nothing at this point. " "You don't care what we have to say," parent Tracy Polachek said.
Lewis pioneered in the active involvement of parents in school reforms. Michael Bloomberg won the mayoral control of the schools and his following abandoning of the system to chancellor Klein who recentralized curricular and administrative functions, which destroyed all the agreements of community input in school reforms offering charter support (Lewis, 2015). Such move was disastrous as community control of school was destroyed, meaning that the low-income communities would not be heard. Instead, Klein should have allowed community input in charter schools. Parental and community involvement in school reforms is vital as the local community will be able to articulate their need which will be envisaged and articulated later in the
The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion ( Asst. Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board Member), Shane Oschman (Board Member), and Joseph Troutman (Board Member). Three members of the board were missing; however because of where the seats were located I could not see who was missing. Also, the member did not introduce themselves and left before people could address them.
It was led by the senior members of the school this included the principal and the 2 vice principals who all contributed during the meeting. The members of staff discussed matters concerning the different year groups within the school. Other members of staff also contributed by providing different ideas that promoted a better environment for the children. The purpose of this was to negotiate and coordinate with a range of other collages to explain different ideas to improve the college this also improved the exchanging of information with other teachers.
