1.Teen activist and 2014 Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai said, “I raise up my voice-not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard”. For whom have you raised your voice?
I raise my voice for fellow students at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools as a member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Youth Council. Students experience the strengths as well as the weaknesses inside our schools on a daily basis, yet, there are no student members on the school board. We have presented the idea of student members on the school board, but until that happens, Youth Council members will continue to speak to board members about issues within our schools.
I am a representative for my peers in CMS, so it’s my responsibility to inform current school board members as well as candidates for the CMS school board about the problems in our schools. Our board members must be aware of the weaknesses in our schools, so that they are able to improve on them. I help to

School boards don’t have regular Q&A sessions, so council meetings are a great time to ask the board members questions. For example, I know that some of my fellow students wonder about the qualifications of our school board members. These school board members are making decisions about our education, yet we know little about their background. This is concerning for students because we think of the board members as out of touch when it comes to student problems. At our last meeting, I asked one of the current members about how she will use her experiences as a teacher in order to make herself an excellent board member. As I asked this question, the other council members that attended the meeting nodded their heads in agreement. Many students ponder these questions without ever getting an answer and with my experience as a board member I can answer many of their
Connecting people to the success of the district is one matter, but asking them to support it financially is another. The district is growing in size and is in need of new facilities and internal academic structures to support the growth. As the district continues to grow she is challenged with ensuring that the schools continue to interact with each other and do not return to the independent silos they were when she arrived. Ms. Hall realizes that she is the internal and external face of the district. She takes that very seriously and therefore, tires to view challenges as opportunities and successes as building blocks and
At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.
Local school boards must know and completely understand the basis of legal responsibilities and restrictions. These responsibilities and restriction include overseeing the operation of local public schools. The school board is held accountable for creation of policies, rules and regulations that provides guidance for the administration and operation of schools. The school board is perceived as a corporate body, which means an individual member of the board do not have more power than the overall power that is given to the board by the legislature. Therefore, individual school board members do not have the freedom to formulate policy, or act self-sufficiently of the school board as a whole. School board members are known to be public school officers, and are given powers by the legislature that help them fulfill their responsibilities.
The main challenge that Rocky Road School District is currently facing is the several lawsuits from former parents and staff. As well as the lack of team work that is shown within the district. Having a meeting with all Principals in the Rocky Road district is a most. Negotiation of teacher’s contracts and the hiring of new qualified teachers which will help assist the testing scores for the district. Giving parents a sense of comfort that their children are being well educated is a key challenge. My main challenge will be getting all parties involved in the movement to “Strive for Excellence.” Our main concern is getting faculty, staff, student, parents and the community working together to make Rocky Road School District successful, it takes a team to fix such a messy situation.
The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. Although I
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. Also he also talked about the budget for next year. After that they had a discussion with the
What is the board member most proud of about their school system and in their service to the school system?
On Thursday, September 15, 2016 there was a board meeting in the Education center in Philadelphia. There were seven board members on the school board meeting position; five woman, two men; two African Americans and five Caucasians. Multiple genders and ethnic groups attended the meeting and the audience were sitting in a theater setting, where as the board members were sitting facing the audience up front. It started at 4:30 p.m. and a African American man did attendance to people that were going to speak and talked about the agenda of what 's going on that evening. Also there was two people taking turns presenting sign language for anyone that was death.
I was assigned to Community Board 16, Brownsville and Ocean-hill. My group members and I walked around the neighborhood on a Tuesday at around 6pm. While walking, we noticed that the streets had potholes and there was litter on the sidewalks. At night, there were no streetlights on the streets. We observed that there were a lot of rundown businesses, stores for rent, and abandoned homes. In the few blocks we walked, we saw delis and liquor stores, pharmacies, food marts, clothing stores, NYCHA buildings, and a handful of fast food restaurants. I did not spot many garbage bins and there were no recycle bins in the blocks we toured. The neighborhood was not that noisy except for a few police car sirens and some shouting. The neighborhood has access to bus and train lines, as well as use of private cars. The neighborhood is fairly accessible since there are plenty of bus and train lines.
During my time at UMass Amherst I was given an opportunity to be a teaching assistant (TA) for an integrated experience kinesiology course. I had taken the class the prior semester and the professor noticed my hard work, dedication, and leadership role with in my group and asked me to come work with her. This course is a group project that requires students to work together to build a wellness program for a target population with a chronic disease. At the end of the semester each group presents their project to professors in the kinesiology field and other professionals. The most important aspects of this course is working with in a group and making sure every decision and detail of the project is backed up with appropriate and legitimate research.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. We were able to learn different types of concept in the textbook and utilized it as a team to complete certain tasks. The three concepts that impacted my team and I are human
School boards are usually comprised of parents of students in the school. Students whose parents are on the board are given advantages that students whose parents aren’t on the board don’t receive. For instance, a school may invoke a more lenient punishment on a student who broke a rule if the student’s parent is on the board. This is done so that the school will be on good terms with the members of the board. Schools often favor students who have connections in the school board so that they continue to receive support from the board.
Overall my experience of being in Lingleville ISD was a great experience that allowed me to learn a lot not only about the students in the classroom, but also helped me learn a lot about myself. Going in to this classroom I expected to only learn things about classroom management and maybe a few strategies. After spending a few days in this room I learned many other things. I did learn about classroom management but I also learned about content, strategies, organization, lesson planning, and inclusion adaptations. I learned that an inclusion special education student can really thrive being in a mainstream classroom, not only academically but also socially. It was a wonderful learning opportunity to get to be a part of that. My mentor teacher
