Pay for performance structure is critical to business overall performance. It is one of the effective ways that a firm can motivate its employees to improve their effort and remain loyal to the firm. As noted earlier, the pay for performance influences the labor supply and demand curve to create a competitive labor market. Two exemplary companies in Singapore that have managed to attract employees and retain high performance are SAP and ChapmanCG. In essence, a high wage rate helps in balancing the labor supply and demand curve. For firms that implement high wage rate or incentive and award program, they are never in low supply of labor and this is because most workers are looking to work in such firms. These firms also benefit in term of low rate of turnover, increased loyalty and commitment to the firm, motivated employee, high performance, and less work-related disputes that could lead to litigations. Firms should understand that incentives should never always be in the form of monetary compensation. As highlighted before, compensation can be in the form of structured or casual incentives. The firm can integrate both forms of incentives in order to maximize on their initiatives. In addition, firms should integrate performance evaluation system that will help them provide the right incentive. When providing remedies, formulating regulation and laws, or when bargaining agreements for involved parties, the FWC should consider the significance of pay for incentives and apply this accordingly. Providing low pay and/or incentives to employees is also, in my opinion, not the best way to influence motivational employees who will put forth hard work, and be loyal to the company.
It is also the one of the hardest components for management to fulfill. GMFC needs to be an industry leader in pay as well as implement a merit pay policy for employees. Leading the industry in pay and awarding employees pay increases equal to or better than what the union can negotiate is instrumental to keeping the plant union-free (Fossum, 2012). Also basing pay increases on performance and skills learned is a great incentive to boost productivity and employee motivation. As an example, Volkswagen starts their employees the base rate the union would be able to negotiate keeping employees content (Greenhouse, 2014).
Gabris and Giles (1983) research also supports the importance of performance incentives and its role in relieving conflict, so much more that it trumps human relations methodologies. Furthermore, it indicates that lack of performance incentives shows weak organizational objectives, behaviors, structural arrangement (Gabris & Giles, 1983). The importance of performance incentives have a dramatic influence on an organization yet it so simple that it may be dismissed.
Paying people fairly is good for business. Underpay, and employees will eventually look for a better offer. Overpay, and the payroll budget and profitability will suffer. Companies pay for compensation data because the benefits exceed the costs. The amount companies spend on surveys is just a fraction of a percent of their total payroll costs.

The company Steel Co, which has been established for around 30 years, has been in a steady decline during the current recession and although a Divisional Director has been employed by the owner the fortunes of the company have not improved. The staff is unhappy, unproductive and unimpressed by the Human Resource system that currently exists in the company. In April 2010, KK BB, the CEO of Marshall & Gordon, a leading public relations firm met with the firm’s leadership committee off-site in Miami. This off-site brought together Marshall & Gordon’s executive committee, practice and regional heads, and senior HR officers to discuss on redesigning the firm’s compensation system. A global advisory taskforce, under the direction of an external consulting firm, had spent three months collecting and analyzing data. Marshall & Gordon hired external specialists to design the new performance management program. The specialists proposed that the senior managers and human resource form a global advisory unit together with Marshall & Gordon partner to represent the firm’s five regions of the firm and lead the design process. The advisory unit surveyed all consultants in February in order to understand their way of thinking about the fairness, worth, and effect of the current performance management system. Majority of the interviewees responded to the corporate surveys implying that the subject was topic was especially exciting to them. Interviews gave insights on present and prospective business plans and direction. The survey also showed that specific focus across certain employee populations should be given. Competition is a natural human instinct and healthy competition compels employees to perform at their highest level. Additionally, employers that recognize and reward individuals for their exceptional performance in tangible ways, ultimately increase employee’s self-esteem and encourage them to maintain a high level of commitment to the organization. Employees are more apt to stay with a company when they feel that their hard work is appreciated and compensated. When employees are highly driven, it decreases absenteeism, tardiness, and results in a positive work attitude. In fact, employers use merit pay not only to retain highly motivated performance individuals, but also to attract new employees who are motivated by monetary rewards cultivating a productive workforce. Personally, I think merit pay plans are a great incentive if they are implemented fairly, equitable, and based on individual performance. Furthermore, I feel nothing demoralizes a high performing employee faster than knowing that all employees who contribute less to performance will receive the exact pay increase.
