I carried out this case study on Mrs. Casey (Pseudonym), any 86 year old woman who underwent an elective left total hip replacement (THR). After the OT student studied Mrs. Casey's past medical history in her medical chart, it was noted that she had previously undergone a right THR in 2011, which had been successful and free from complications. Ms. Casey had no other significant past medical history and had been an independent and active woman before the progression of her arthritis. Ms. Casey was required to have total hip replacements carried out on both hip joints as a result of severe Osteoarthritis (OA), which lead to stiffness, pain, and an eventual decrease in mobility, affecting her quality of life and involvement in meaningful occupations.

Social agency and the court authorizing the placement, and caregivers are responsible for the continuing monitoring to ensure that the child in placement receives adequate care and supervision (Downs, Moore and McFadden, 2009, p.275). Services for children in foster care are a teamwork effort of the different parties involved (Downs, Moore and McFadden, 2009). Unfortunately in Antowne’s situation the agency and the court system failed him because although he was removed from his mother, the abuse and neglect continued. The systems involved did not provide the safety net Antwone needed.
Many parents are faced with this issue across the United States, but in Katy’s case, she has inflicted with a life changing event a terminal illness that prevents her from working and paying for child care services. Katy received a letter from her employer stating that they will no longer reimburse for child care services because of her not working. Denial of child care has contributed to the exacerbation of Katy’s symptoms and poor health outcome. Therefore, I am requesting a meeting held during this week with Katy and the Department of Social Services (DSS). The discussion will be focused on denial of child care payments and agreement for a Fair Hearing to discuss Katy’s inability to work and her limitations.
According to the case study, the family is living in a three-bedroom mobile home that houses three adults, 2 children, and newborn on the way home. Multi-generational living is common within the Hispanic community, this is a cultural practice widely accepted and embraced (Fry & Pasal, 2014). It is important for the assessor to both understand and take into consideration this cultural factor and aid them in obtaining better coping skill (especially Jamie) in their tight living quarters. Nurses involved in the case should enlist the help of social workers in order to investigate the quarters in which the children are living. Ensuring the safety of the existing children in the residence is paramount. Also modifications that may be needed to be made in regards to the needs of the incoming coming child should be evaluated. Asking direct and pertinent questions regarding safety in the home is of significant importance. On a Micro level of social work I feel that the strengths of the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act outweigh the weaknesses greatly. Although the services might not always benefit the client the main goal is to provide successful services to the youth. Depending on the situation it is stated in the RHYA that many youth are in need of urgent temporary shelter and services. First and for most safe and appropriate shelter is provided for the homeless youth. Individual, family and group counseling services are available under this act. ...acility. This solution provided safety for the resident by placing her in a higher monitored region of the facility. Her son would have to check in before visiting, allowing staff to keep an eye on him in a designated meeting area. Even though the solution seemed fitting, the resident did not wish to be moved. The facility could not violate her decision to stay, but we also could not allow her son to continue to pose a threat. After two days of working with the resident and discussing options, she hesitantly agreed to move to another room. This benefited her in many ways, because it allowed her to stay in contact with her son while retaining a safe environment. Through this situation I learned that the human will can defy rationality, but as a Social Worker I must still strive to safely and efficiently handle these situations in a way that accommodates their rights.
The book “Breaking Night” by Liz Murray is a memoir that describes Liz Murray’s life growing up with a substance addicted mother and father. The memoir recounts Liz Murray’s struggles including taking care of her mother, who battled substance addiction and severe mental illness, truancy, and homelessness. Throughout Liz Murray’s story there were countless systems that failed her and her family. Several systems, including social services and school, could have implemented several federal, state, and local policies that could have provided assistance to Liz Murray’s family and alleviated the stress on Liz Murray that enabled her from successfully attending school on a regular basis. While reading the memoir, I was able to identify two different housing policies that could have been implemented to reduce or eliminate Liz’s risk of homelessness. Furthermore, Wotherspoon, Laberge, and Pirie (2008) indicate that the “… rapid increase in the number of requests for a consultation from our child welfare partners…” (p. 391) demonstrates the positive benefits of their CMHC program. This program has built a relationship with Child Welfare and included opportunities for those workers to enhance their knowledge (Wotherspoon, Laberge, & Pirie, 2008) on child development, mental health and trauma implications. As highlighted in Bass’s et al. (2004) report, the policies and practices for child welfare agencies are varied between different states, hence their contribution towards alleviating and preventing mental health problems in young foster children is unbalanced and hard to measure in terms of success.
Elderly adults face an abundant amount of abuse in many healthcare settings. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), elder abuse is defined as, “intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of a vulnerable elder” (NCEA, 2017, p. 2). Elder abuse can possess many forms, including physical abuse, neglect, emotional or psychological abuse, financial abuse or exploitation, sexual abuse, and abandonment. (NCEA, 2017, p. 2). This abuse can take place in many settings that house seniors, age 65 years old and up regardless of age, sex, or race. These senior care facilities can include, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, and/or senior day care
A child and youth care professional can be described as a juxtaposition; an emotionally tough job with challenges, but incredibly rewarding and inspiring at the exact same time. Upon interviewing a child and youth care professional with 4 years of experience working in a group home, named Sarah Bakelaar at the Arrow Lodge in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 16th, 2015 at 3:30pm, it was evident that these workers require exceptional skills to help their clients. Arrow Lodge group home is an initiative through McMan Youth Family and Community Services Association throughout Alberta, serving the community by supporting individuals to reach their full potential. This particular Group Home, Arrow Lodge serves to provide a home to an all male clientele from the ages of 15-18 years of age.
