Kristi House is a non-profit organization dedicated to healing and eradicating child sexual abuse in Miami-Dade County. Department of Justice statistics reveals high child sexual abuse incidents in the US: 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys are sexually abused in the US before age 18 (2000). When a child disclosure about the abuse, it is important that caregiver believes those allegations and provide support as soon as possible. Mothers are the principal caregivers and are the connection between agency and child. A moderate number of caregivers don’t cooperate with outreach and denied services. Services at Kristi House are offered to families whose children have experienced sexual abuse and it is an open door agency. Every family that is …show more content…
The caretakers’ response to a child 's disclosure of sexual abuse is important. Asking about caretakers’ emotional state and support systems can be helpful in optimizing services for the family. Significant concerns for child safety are raised when a caretaker is openly disbelieving of a child 's disclosure and when a caretaker allows further contact between a child and the suspected perpetrator of abuse. (p. 21) Kristi House provides case coordination services to mothers who are on need of shelter, food, relocation assistant or looking for a job. Moreover, there is a need of psychoeducation on sexual abuse in the community. Parents think that sexual abuse is only if someone has been raped. It is not true about that statement. Sexual abuse can be child’s molestation, exposure or pornography. According to London et al. (2005) “ a major problem with relying on children’s statements in forensic investigations is that many sexually abused children remain silent about abuse; they may deny that abuse ever occurred, or they may produce a series of disclosures of abuse followed by recantations of these disclosures” (p.195). Most of this happens because children blame themselves; attempt to make everything better in the family or mothers pressure them to change their …show more content…

High Sky Children’s Ranch first opened their doors in 1963, when a woman named Joan Nobles was concerned about girls who had no absolutely no place to go. She was the president of the PTA when she heard a young juvenile probation officer speak about the need for a home for those girls that had no where to go. She, along with many others, worked for three years to open the first home. In 1963 the first home was opened and housed five girls (High Sky Children’s Ranch, 2011). In 1985 High Sky changed their license to accept both boys and girls, which enabled them to keep sibling groups together. In 1987 High Sky was relicensed as a treatment facility to work with kids who were more traumatized or needed a higher level of care and was later licensed as a Therapeutic Foster Care. Since the case of Mary Ellen Wilson in 1874, child abuse has seen it’s share of light in published news. It is disheartening to read countless stories of future generations being harmed to the extent of psychological damage or even death. Child abuse as a whole has been addressed multiple times in various news blogs, however, nothing has been done to work towards abolishing it at a larger level. The future of America is in jeopardy based on the level of abuse that children endure. Childhelp states that approximately 5 children die every day at the hands of child abuse. America struggles to find equality, and by bystanding the stripping of its youth, continual prolonging is inevitable. Raising this nation’s children in means of nurturing and care is the first step to uplifting America as a whole. In 2012 alone, 1593 of America’s children died at the hands of child abuse, 70.3% of which were younger than the age of three (Safe Horizon). In order to prevent further child abuse, the American government should address stricter child protection laws, psychological stability, and an increase the recognition of those that have released their stories.
54% of women victims of serious sexual assault were assaulted by their partner or ex-partner (Stern 2010). 19% of women have experienced stalking since the age of 16 (Smith (Ed.), Coleman, Eder and Hall January 2011). These statistics help give a picture of the problem but do little to shed light on the solution. There are many programs and shelters offered to victims of domestic violence, Hill Country Cares is one of them. Hill Country Cares is a government funded women’s shelter better known s HCC. This is a place where victims of domestic violence are referred to from many sources. (i.e. local authorities after reporting a domestic violence incident). HCC is a safe place where victims receive many different types of assistance while their situation, as well as the painfully intimate details of their abuse, are kept entirely confidential.

Obviously, working with survivors of child sexual abuse, neglect, and trauma: The approach taken by the social worker in the Brandon’s case shall begin with “assessment and beginning treatment of the family because child abuse is one of a wide range practice situation in which systems concepts can be applied to help to understand the dynamics involved” in the road for healing and recovery from the physical and psychological effect of the trauma by providing adequate resources available for counseling and therapy due to the devastating impacts of child sexual abuse can be heartbreaking for the victim and the family. However, social worker approach to understanding and responds efficiently by being empathetic to the complex situation as a result; the perpetrator is the father such as in the case of Brandon (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014).
Many people think that children do not lie. It is not that they lie, they just cannot remember what happened a year or two ago when they were much younger, perhaps only a year or two old. The truth is children do lie. “One study shows that twenty three percent of abuse allegations are false and there was insufficient information to determine the truth in another twenty four percent” (Slicker W.D., 1999, Child testimony ¶ 16). Fear is also a factor in children lying or not providing adequate information. Lepore (1991) says that studies show in most abuse cases the suspect will usually bribe the child or threaten them into secrecy. This causes the child to become afraid to tell the truth, and they will begin to deny what has happened or even worse not report the abuse at all. The way an interviewer phrases a question will influence a child.
Child abuse in the United States is a growing epidemic. Every year the number of reported cases, and missing children go up. This is caused mostly by lack of education about the different types of child abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Communities need to provide more resources to better educate the public about the types of abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Child abuse and neglect can be lessened by more resources, more education and to reach out to others.

Without women’s shelters, millions of abused women would not have a “way out” of the danger they face each and every day. Based on the statistics, survival stories that are typical of victims helped at a shelter, and the beneficial resources provided at shelters, it is obvious that women’s shelters are very effective and necessary. It is crucial that these shelters receive adequate funding in order to give victims of domestic violence a hope for a better future.
Child abuse is a very serious problem that nurses may encounter over the duration of their careers, it is important to understand the signs of child abuse, and be able to recognize it. There are various different kinds of child abuse that may be observed, it is important to remember that all forms of abuse are damaging, and serious and should be treated appropriately (Caneira, & Myrick, 2015). Many challenges are associated with child abuse and this may affect the role of the nurse when providing care to these families. The purpose of this paper is to explore what child abuse is, the role of the nurse in abusive families, and how the nurse can be involved in some of its challenges.
Although physical abuse is the most recognized form of domestic violence, sexual abuse on a child is the most common, and despite the fact that 91 percent of sexual abuse is committed by a non-family member, it still takes place in the child’s home. This kind of activity can drastically change the behavior and judgment of children with their sexuality, self-esteem, and overall outlook on life.
More importantly, “60 percent of children who are sexually abused do not disclose and most are acquaintances but as many as 47 percent are family or extended family” (The Scope of, 2016). The prevalence of child sexual abuse is difficult to determine because it is often not reported; experts agree that the incidence is far greater than what is reported to authorities (Child Sexual Abuse, 2012). Startling statistics represent the depth of the issue. Globally, prevalence rates show that a range of 7-36% of women and 3-29% of men experience sexual abuse in childhood (The Scope of, 2016). “The U.S Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau report child maltreatment 2010 found that 9.2% of victimized children were sexually assaulted” (Child Sexual Abuse,
A major American society issue is child abuse and it just keeps increasing with each new generation. We need to always be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of child abuse and report it to proper authorities. “Approximately five children die every day because of child abuse” (Ho, Gross, & Bettencourt, 2017). “One out of three girls and one out of five boys will be sexually abused before they reach age 18” (Gosselin, 2014). And, 90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator such as a family member” (Ho, Gross, & Bettencourt, 2017). As healthcare providers, we are these children’s option to live another day because more than four children die daily from neglect and child abuse (Ho, Gross, & Bettencourt,
On our field of observation we went to the Family Justice Center of Sonoma County, this is a place where that provides and promote a safe community for people that have been a victim of a crime. The specialist such as doctors, psychiatrist and physicians provide assistance to survivors of domestic and relationship violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, as well as recently a deaf and hearing abuse victims. The FJCSC is one of the seventeen places in the state to help victims and one out of eighty victims of crime in the United States. The FJCSC is a one stop shop where as other facilities require you to make 21 different stops to get the same service. Last year the family justice center helped 14 hundred victims. Those victims brought at total of 900 children. I enjoyed the tour of the family justice center of Sonoma County. I learned a lot on how each patient is taken care of and the processes of each situation.
