Yes, their piercing sound, that strangely resembles a dolphin, can travel up to two and a half miles and unfortunately right through the brick walls of my house in Palm Coast, Florida. The thoughts presented in the stories are very similar as both characters are somewhat childlike and are quite naive. Choy once again uses dialogue to show how Mie isn’t as wise as her parents. Mie’s mother who is much wiser says “Well, when I was your age I had many dreams, as children do,”(Choy 11). Here Mie’s mother sees Mie’s dream as childish as she needs to be worried about things that are much more important. Imagery is also used to show how Mie wants to see the red cranes. There are many Osprey nests along the lower Connecticut River. There is activity on the many man-made nesting platforms along the Connecticut River, in “natural” tree settings and on the top of each of the large navigation aids that mark the river channel. One interesting fact to note about osprey is that they mate for life but take separate vacations. Obviously, they must be on to something.

Before development exploded in California, the state contained about 5 million acres of wetland habitat. Unfortunately, over the years California has been willing to part with 91 percent of its wetlands, Southern California having lost 95 percent. Los Angeles County has only one wetland remaining. This being the Ballona Wetlands located between Marina del Rey and the Westchester bluffs, it was once a major part of California’s natural wetland systems. Before development, Ballona wetlands natural habitat covered 2002 acres. This area, 800 to 1000 acres, referred to as Playa Vista by its owners is made up of salt marsh freshwater marsh and part upland and dune areas. It is considered Los Angeles’ largest ‘wetland ecosystem’. Although degraded over the years it still functions as a normal natural wetland - providing vital services. A major function it provides is that it filters out toxic wastes and pollutants from stormwater runoff before they reach the Santa Monica Bay. It is "a coastal plain, and acts as a flood plain for the surrounding area" (FOBW Information folder 1998: Fact Sheet). Ballona is an integral part of the Pacific flyaway, providing vital feeding and nesting habitat for over 185 species of birds, including some on the federal endangered species list. The southwestern willow flycatcher, an endangered species, was just recently seen by developers in an area cleared for construction. When Spring rain starts, land crabs know that the signal for mating season. Land crabs mate in underground burrows. Millions of female crabs hurry toward the ocean to drop off their fertilized eggs in the water and return to the swamp. Mullet and other fish eat the little crabs that hatch from the eggs. The baby crabs that survive the first few weeks of their lives, will join the adults in nearby forests. Unfortunately, crossing a road is part of the journey to the ocean. Therefore, many drivers find that their tires have been punctured and many crabs have been run over. The crabmeat is toxic to people, but animals seem to love it. The Humpback Whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, is part of the marine mammals group. They are found in oceans all over the world, they live in open waters. Even though they are mammals, they do not live on land (Monterey Bay Aquarium). Humpback whales are known for their magical song that can travel great distances. These gentle giants are omnivores, their main diet is krill. They are mostly found near coastlines feeding on tiny shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish. Humpbacks migrate annually from summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding water closer to the Equator. Humpback whales are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin, called a fluke to propel themselves through or even out of the water! Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appears to be gestures of affection. Even though it takes more than one year for a humpback whale to grow fully, mother whales leave them after one year (National Geographic).
