Washington was previously a land surveyor, given a large grant of land from the King that he needed to conquer for himself. This led to him being a military general. Leading a hundred men with him under the title of “colonel,” Washington led his men to a French fort in present-day Pittsburg. On his trip, one of his men killed a French officer and he had to surrender. However, rather than simply handing himself to the French, he sought proper military conduct and built Fort Necessity, were he took guilt for his men’s actions. Later, he would fight with General Braddock at Fort Duquesne. As shown through Braddock’s campaigns, the British could easily be defeat; the French would surely have won the French and Indian Wars, had it not been for William Pitt who took over control for London. Washington, who was very keen, took notice of this and it would later be instrumental for the colonial efforts against the British. The French and Indian Wars was the precursor the American Revolution. Though the American Colonies had played a very small role in the previous world wars fought over them, the last one would be the war that would set the stage for their revolt. Here, Washington would be tested as leader for the first time, the colonies would begin to plan their unification, and the myth of British invincibility would be dismissed.
