Recommended: What is salvation? essay

According to the Mariam- Webster dictionary salvation is, “deliverance from the power and effects of sin.” The concept of salvation is principal to Christianity. Looking at the history of Christianity, Jesus Christ is known as the savior, which is what spring the Christian movement. The religion of Christianity began and contined because Christians see Jesus as someone who brings God’s salvation to the people. When it comes to Christianity there is no real definition of salvation although it is very important to the religion. The meaning of salvation remains unknown exactly. When Adam and Eve went against, man and God became separated through sin. Death alone would not be enough to cover all the evils on sin. Sacrifice offered in the right way can pay for our sin. We work all our life to pay for the sins we are born with. Jesus Christ came and offered us the pure everlasting sacrifice, which is his death, and resurrection which would remove all debt of sin.     Salvation is an important part of the Catholic religion. As a non-religious student, I have had to rely heavily on the definition of Salvation from the teachings in my class. With the aid of The Bible, C.S. Lewis’ book Mere Christianity, St. Athanasius’ writing on Incarnation, and the “Class Notes on Salvation, I have been able to grasp an understanding of what Salvation is. At first, I believed that Salvation was a simple definition. I thought that Salvation was accepting Jesus Christ so that all of one’s sins are washed away. However, Salvation is much more than that. After multiple classes, I have learned that Salvation is essentially God’s plan to save humans by cleansing humans from Original Sin by using mechanical techniques such as becoming a finite being and dying for humans to live an indisputably whole life. After looking at the Fall, Lewis argues that sin affects the character of the fallen individual. Because of Original Sin, it can be said that human beings are corrupted in the mind which can be seen as a punishment in itself. With the understanding of Salvation, Catholics view Salvation by understanding the two sides of Salvation, Justification and Sanctification.

    The story of historical Jesus is not an easy story to tell. There is very little evidence for historians to go by and no sources that are from the actual time of Jesus. Years after his death there were attempts to document what Jesus had said and done during his life and the preaching’s he taught (Fisher, 2008, p. 295). It is believed that Jesus may have had a more mainstream up bringing then being a “humble carpenter” from a low social status, or peasant, like the Bible states. Since there is so little evidence of Jesus there are conflicting theories about who Jesus actually was and how he was raised. Some historians believe that Jesus was part of the artisan class and worked in the city of Sepphoris. They also believe he was tri-lingual, speaking Aramaic, Hebrew, and Hellenistic Greek, so he could do business in the city of Sepphoris and his ministry work (From Jesus to Christ, 1998). It is also known that Jesus was Jewish and was a preacher of the Jewish texts.
