The highest honor for both athlete and country is participating in the Olympics. It is a historical event showcasing lifelong work and dedication that athletes put themselves through just for a chance to wear the gold medal on their neck. It is also a tremendous honor for which city will hold the Olympics. The city must have the resources and funding to create a memorable mark on the history of sports. To host the winter Olympics a city has to meet certain requirements, the hosting city should have cold winter climate and large amounts of snow for outdoor events. The city should also have plenty of space to build arenas and housing for athletes. During the time when the 2002 Olympics were going on the terrorist attack on 9/11 was still fresh in the minds of many and the fear was still very much alive. However, Salt Lake City brought a nation together and showed that this attack will not define America and the world. Another important aspect to look at because Salt Lake City has already hosted is they know how to spend their budget appropriately and what improvements to be made. In an article entitled “Salt Lake City Ready, Willing and Able to Host 2026 Winter Olympics but Obstacles Remain”, Fraser Bullock, who played an important role in putting together the 2002 Olympics commented on Salt Lake City hosting them again. He commented on the courses saying “They do need some maintenance,” he said. “When we built them, it was for about a 20-year life. We’re now coming up on that. There will be some capital required to keep them at a world-class level.” Even with the cost to upgrade Bullock was still confident with Salt Lake City’s being the best place to host the Olympics. “Whether it’s 2026, 2030, or beyond, in my mind Salt Lake remains the best place in the world to host a Winter Games,” claimed Bullock. Still, with the upgrades, the cost to fix up the courses would not cost nearly as much as it would build
