During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who was known for unleashing brutal persecution against Christians, Sebastian continued to practice and declare his Christian beliefs and aided fellow Christians, hence breaking Roman laws. Sebastian's commitment to his faith led to his eventual persecution and eventually became martyred. Yet, according to legend, he was subjected to a sentence of death by arrows, a punishment given to silence his defiance. Miraculously, Sebastian survived the torment, only to be later captured and martyred through other means, cementing his status as a symbol of courage and steadfastness in the face of the church. And on his feast day, every January 20th, the church recognizes the feast day of Saint Sebastian. Since the day lies during the season of Christmas, vestments worn are that of white. The iconic imagery of Saint Sebastian, depicted bound to a tree or post, pierced by arrows, serves as a virtue of endurance, perseverance, and resilience. I invite you to consider the life of an interesting human being with me in this paper. Let us investigate together the man known as Irenaeus of Lyons. The name Irenaeus means a “‘man of peace,’ and the early Christian historian Eusebius honored Irenaeus as a peacemaker in keeping with his name.”
The medieval knight Sir Gawain is a hero like Achilles, but his certain characteristics make him unlike his Greek counterpart. The first quality that creates the separation of Gawain is that he is a Christian character, meaning that he believes in the monotheistic religion of Christianity, following the teachings of Jesus and God. He holds the values of this religion to be true such that he should follow with respect, compassion, and forgiveness. This religious view of life affects what Gawain holds to be his moral code, because he fights for God and for his soul to be perfect to reach heaven. Unlike Achilles during classical antiquity, the Middle Ages held Christianity, along with God and the soul, to be the controlling factors in which how people lived their lives.
