St.Marianne Cope spent the majority of her life taking care of the lepers on the island of Molokai. Saint Marianne Cope inspires me to become a better person by helping others not only in my community, but outside as well. I inspire to be as caring and thoughtful as Saint Marianne was. When Saint Marianne's dad passed away she didn't turn to misbehavior nor delinquency, but she turned to the pure religious life. Marianne has taught me that when I experience some hard and emotion moments, not to breakout and throw a "fit", but turn to the love of God. Making me realize that God is not only our father but our comforter through the good and bad times.
Almost immediately after her death in 1980 controversy arose about whether Dorothy Day should be canonized a Saint by the Church. Now that the Vatican has approved the late Cardinal John O'Connor's request to consider Dorothy Day's "cause," the controversy is being rekindled. After converting, she dedicated her life to New York's poor and immigrants, building hospitality homes that operated much like homeless shelters. Her endeavor grew into the national Catholic Worker movement, a social justice crusade conducted in revolutionary tones new to the church.
While comparing her time, theology and spiritual practice we realize she lived during the time of immense change, similarly we are living on the edge of a challenged modernity. Her spiritual direction allows us to recognize and develop further abilities in our pastoral ministries of caring for one another as participants within the corporate communities as well as within the mission fields.
Elizabeth Ann Seton is someone I greatly admire. She was a brave, intelligent and determined person. Being persecuted for her faith and going through so many hard times never stopped her from following her heart and proclaiming God’s word. She was one of the first saints I ever learned about. We also have a lot in common. I share her love of music, poetry and nature. She was also fluent in French. I speak French as well. I was especially interested in learning more about her because she wasn’t born catholic and neither was I. Originally, I was baptized as a protestant, but became Catholic when I was about seven years old. Studying the saints has better prepared me for my upcoming Confirmation and I now know that there is a saint out there whom I can relate
After seeing though the eyes of my pastor I’ve come to realize the importance of faith and committing to one’s beliefs. Returning to church after two massive losses has helped my mother in many ways and it has also taught me as a young man how small things that I could do would turn to have a big impact on someone’s life the same way my pastor impacted my life and the life of my siblings.
Perpetua has taught me a lot about being a Christian witness. . Perpetua had so much going for her in life, a baby, she was well- educated etc. She was willing to lose all of this for Christ, which is so admirable. She had to endure so much pain to become a Christian, but for her it was all worth it. Her father beat her, she was thrown in prison, and beasts ate her but the whole time her faith remained strong. Her strength makes her a role model for everyone. She never once gave up on God, and she continued to love him. Even when she had the chance to not become a Christian, she still went through knowing all the consequences, which included dying a gruesome death. That kind of strength and trust in God is something everyone should follow. Perpetua remained a witness to Christ all throughout her life, even during her trial when she could have backed out. This truly taught me that I should never give up on Christ, or deny my faith even if it means
Sister Rose is an incredibly inspiring person and her work as an upstander what sets her apart from other people. She was ridiculed, criticism and opposition, but she persevered, making the change happen. She inspires me to face problems and criticism head on, and overcome them to accomplish my goals. I face opposition every day for being a female, Hispanic and African American, and Sister Rose inspires me to face that opposition and stand up for others who face that same opposition. Sister Rose worked extremely vigorously to change the religion books, and other religious reading for Christianity. I am inspired to one day works as vigorously as she did to make a change and help others better their lives. To conclude, Sister Rose worked diligently to help others, and that inspired me to be an upstander and work just as
Saint Catherine of Siena is the saint that I have chosen to be my saint. She was very interesting to me, and her story was very intriguing. She is the patron saint of fire prevention, bodily ills, sick people, miscarriages, nurses, and illness. She was canonized in 1461 by Pope Pius II. Her feast day is now celebrated on April 29.
The services and works that my saint is known for serving the poor and sick, she also
Dr. James Sawyer, the first person I would see every morning in the band room for first hour, my freshman year. I have never met anyone with much wisdom and respect for all people. Doc, fills a room with joy and reverence, he can make someone smile without speaking. He was not only my band director for four years, he is a mentor and a friend, someone I trust and look up to. Everyday, he would enlighten us, give us advice on being better students and people in society. I have kept a moral that Dr. Sawyer constantly reminded us of. He told us that one of our purposes in life was to help others. In any way we could help them, whether it was opening the door for a busy person, or directing them to the correct location. It did not make a difference of how famous we would become before we died or how wealthy we were. So
I chose St. Catherine of Alexandria because she is an amazing role model. She taught her faith in times of great peril to herself and kept on teaching until she died. She even used the power of God and showed everyone that God is watching over her and taking care of her and everyone around her by breaking the wheel as soon as she touched it. She is also a martyr and changed many people’s lives during her time on earth. Thousands of people were converted and inspired by her, but sadly many of them were persecuted. I can be like her by trying to spread my faith in any way I can, at any time I
The person who has inspired me the most in my life would have to be my first tennis coach, Katee Sanderson. It is tough to narrow it down to one single person because I have numerous role models, but she would definitely stand out above any of the others.
She taught my health science class. At the beginning Ms. Emily appeared to be my polar opposite. She acted excited constantly, praised Jesus like crazy, and radiated positivity. Ms. Emily terrified me because she had the aspects of who I wanted to be but nothing I had. However, despite every defense mechanism I placed around myself she saw through them. Emily Weesner displayed love and acceptance to a person she barely even knew at the time. For the first time in well over a year little parts of my walls began falling off. Throughout the year with many lunchtime conversations she taught me that through God and myself thing would eventually improve. I just had to believe in
In February of 2010 a teacher at my high school was diagnosed with an uncommon form of cancer called angiosarcoma. Ms. Ensign was a business technology teacher. Along with her teaching she was a varsity softball coach, varsity volleyball coach and an athletic facility manager for the school. One could also spot her at sporting events and school assemblies taking photographs for the school yearbook. Ms. Ensign would be treated monthly in Houston, TX. Even though she had this rare form of cancer, one would never know because she always returned to school the next day after her treatments. Ms. Ensign was the most positive woman I have ever met. She was someone who gave everything to her community and asked for nothing in return. How would one give back to such an amazing person? Fortunately, a senior named Manda conceived a plan to help, She called it Mission Ensign. Mission Ensign began as an ongoing fundraiser that assisted in funding for all of Ms. Ensigns travel expenses. The first year we raised $10,000. Manda led Mission Ensign when I was a sophomore. Elected Student Council co-pr...
She taught me how to be a good person in a time of darkness in our small town. My friend Madeline is such an outgoing, caring, above and beyond person. She also is a great leader and very artistic. This is why we became friends. When we met we were both shy but so how she felt special to me. Because of this she is my Michigan Hero.
There have been a vast number of lives that have touched mine. Many different people have shared a piece of their soul in my formation. However, it is my mother who is the most important and most influential person in my life. My mother raised me by herself since the day I was born. My father was abusive and she left to make a better life for the both of us. She has worked as many as four jobs at one time. My mother wants to make sure my brothers and I have a better life than she did. It hasn’t always been easy for her, taking care of us on her own, trying to pay bills and making sure we had everything we needed. My mom has always had us involved in sports at a very young age. We always were doing something or involved in something growing up. We went to summer school all through elementary school because she wanted us to get a head start. I remember when we were little she enrolled us I a manners and more class and I can recall when we would go out to eat people would compliment us on how well behaved we were.
