John Bosco was born in Turin, Italy, on August 16, 1815. His parents were poor farmers, but his father died when he was two years old, but John was too young to know what happened, and it forced his mother, Margaret, to raise him along with 3 other children and taught them the importance of their faith. It was very hard for his mother so John went out and got a few little jobs to help his mother. He had many jobs like a carpenter, shoe-maker, a cook, a pastry maker, and a farmer. While growing up John wanted to become a priest. One night when John was a boy he had a dream that he led young boys; and when he awoke he realized his life's work was to help poor boys. Bosco also had many other dreams along with many others that directed him to help homeless boys. Bosco when he was young went to fairs and carnivals, and learned and mastered them when he got home and then kept the young people in his village occupied by doing magic tricks and acrobatic moves, and only ask prayers for payment. Also, he would speak to children about God, and even some adults occasionally. The seminary school that Bosco entered was Chieri at the age of 16. Father Cafasso helped John through seminary school because he could not afford it, neither could his mother help him pay for it.
John became a priest in 1841 at the age of 26, and was named Don Bosco, which means Father Bosco. After Sunday Mass's he would have a catechism class
which would teach young people about God. After a while the catechism class turned into a school were boys could receive a real education, not just a religion class. He was appointed chaplain of St. Philomena's Hospice for girls. John did not really like his job so he resigned and opened a house for boys, where he helped boys that he saw on the streets, and brought them to the house where he fed them, clothed them, and sheltered them. Then he started his own religious order of 17 priests and brothers, they were called the Salesians in 1859, after St. Francis de Sales. He then setup residences and schools to teach boys grammar and religion, and train them as shoemakers, tailors, and printers. By 1856, he had 150 boys and girls in residence and nearly 500 more in oratories throughout Turin.
A series of events altered his name to become the famous alias, he is he is now referred to by: John Papa ‘I’i. He adopted the name “Papa” after his uncle, who had been his guardian in early adolescence. He presumably acquired the name “‘I’i”, due to the
San Miguelito... It has what you like is officially founded April 14, 1597 by a group of tarascan Indians and Mexicans from the village of Tlaxcalilla, commanded by the Mexican Francisco Jocquinque. In the application of Foundation, approved by Luis Valderrama Saavedra, Mayor of San Luis Potosí, settled at the new town, you were granted 2 thousand 500 rods of land in table, measured from the orchard of the convent of San Francisco more or less in the present street of Pascual M. Hernandez. Quickly named a Government for the Administration and good order of the new settlement, initially consisting of a regular Mayor, one more Deputy and one or two topiles. Like other peoples of Indians and Spaniards in the territory of San Luis Potosí, San Miguelito was subject to the greater mayorship of San Luis Potosí, civil and ecclesiastical to the Franciscan order. Over time is avecindaron in the new town families of Otomi, mulattos, mestizos and blacks, which caused some friction. In the early years of the 17TH century settled in the place other two villages: San Francisco - also appointed in diminutive - and the Holy Trinity, and in the last decades of the century is also mentioned as part of its jurisdiction, San Juan de Guadalupe. These villages, until the beginning of the 19th century, were usually identified as part of the territory of the town of San Miguel. Born in Paris on Nov. 4,1577, Francois Leclerc du Tremblay was the son of a royal judge. After brief military career, he underwent a religious conversation and joined the Capuchin order, taking the name Father Joseph. His missionary zeal , political astuteness, and tireless activity enable him to rise rapidly within the Capuchin order, and Father Joseph directed its energies to converting infidels aboard and the Protestant Huguenots in France.
In all of American history, there are many men who stand out and emphasize the history ofour country. This man, John Hancock, is one of those extraordinary men that stand out.John’s life began on January 16, 1736 in Braintree, Massachuchetts.John was the middle child of three. He was the son of (Rev.) John Hancock, born on June 1, 1702 in Lexington, Massachuchetts and son of Mary Hawke, born on October 13, 1711 in Hingham, Massachuchetts. Mary was once married before she married John Hancock Sr. Her previous marriage ended in her former husband’s death.(Rev.) John Hancock was well-liked by his parish, was paid well, and was provided a very comfortable home. In return of their generosity, he was a "faithful shepard." He kept an attentive watch over the morals and religious well-being of all members of the parish.
St. John, at his introduction in the novel, is a clergyman with plans to become a missionary someday soon. This is not surprising for clergymen, according to Andrew F. Walls, author of The Missionary Movement in Christian History, since "a missionary was essentially a preacher, and a preacher should normally be a minister" (161). At this time, it was considered normal for a clergyman to become a missionary. But a missionary did have to be more than a clergyman. He also must have "common sense" and "competence," Walls says. St. John has all of these qualities and more, making him perfect for a life of sacrifice.
John Adams was born on October 30th, 1735 to John Adams Sr. and Susanna Boylston Adams. He was the oldest of three and lived in Braintree, Massachusetts. His father was a farmer, deacon, and town councilman. The Adams were not very wealthy and John Adams’ father knew he could only send one son and he wanted to send his eldest. However, John Adams told his father “I do not love books and I wish you would lay aside thoughts of sending me to college.” His father in reply asked him- “What would you do child? Be a farmer?” John insisted that he wanted to be a farmer and not a scholar. His father brought him to work the fields the next day. Farming was strenuous work and was most likely rough on John’s hands and back. The night after the long day of farming, His father questioned him “Well John are you satisfied with being a farmer.” John Adams refused to admit that his father was right but John Adams Sr said “I do not like it[farming] so well, so you shall go to school.” John Adams and his father found a compromise- John would go to a tutor that challenged his students instead of the town teacher that was unbearably easy. Adams excelled under the tutors teaching and was accepted to Harvard in 1751.
John Adams was born on October 30, 1725 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony on the family farm. He was the older of two younger brothers, Peter and Elihu. John was named after his father John Adams Sr. His father was said to be the town's tax collector, selectman, constable and lieutenant of the militia. John Adams Sr. was the younger Adams’ role model. John’s parents gave him a lot of freedom. It was said that he doing activities outdoors and cared little for school. It is said that John’s stubbornness started at the age of ten when his parents were afraid that he was wasting his exceptional intellect. His father asked him what he was to do with his life and John said that he wanted to be a farmer. The next day his father took him out to the fields and worked him as hard as he could, hoping to teach him a lesson, but that night Adams sr. asked him if he was satisfied being a farmer and little John replied, “I like it very well sir.” Both of his parents were very surprised with his reply.
Francis impacted the world in many ways. St. Francis formed many traditions and cultures to the Christian faith. St. Francis founded an order that takes on of his followers with him all around Italy claiming to be itinerant preachers in 1209. On St. Francis’ free time, he would preach to people in churches, stores, restaurants, and even in the streets! He went out of his way to help people he didn’t know. This taught people how to be generous and caring. St. Francis created an organization called The Order of Friars Minor. The Order of Friars Minor stands for the Franciscans. The Franciscans means “brother.” The Order of Friars Minor was founded to go out into the towns and preach the word of God. The Franciscans also helped the poor and sick around. They brought food to the poor and cared for them. The Franciscans visited the imprisoned and comforted
St. Boniface, originally named Winfrith, was an extremely studious man, a converted monk, priest, missionary and finally martyr. Born in 672, near Exeter, England, St. Boniface at an early age developed a desire to follow the path of God and live a monastic life. Through non-stop prayer and religious practices, he tuned his mind and body to reach beyond the obstacles and enticements of everyday life at his young adult age. He was a major influence on society during his life and affected the lives and history of Germany permanently. Often called the “Apostle of Germany”, St. Boniface was a strong believer in the principles of the Church and truly wanted to open any pagan believers minds to the knowledgeable and rewarding path of the Christian life.
John went to public schools as a young child, while later he went to private schools in Riverdale, New York and Wallingford, Connecticut. Then he went to Harvard. He was an excellent golfer, swimmer and overall athlete. During a football game, John injured his back.
The religious site that I chose for my course assignment is the Church of Saint Raymond, a historical landmark. One could say that it definitely stands out boldly in the neighborhood that its located in which is the Castle Hill/ Parkchester proper in the Bronx. Growing up I frequently visited the church and was always astounded by its massive size and incredible architecture. Compared to the dimly lit parish of Santa Maria, which always smelled like wet wood (and still does), it always seemed unreal being inside. I was born and baptized a Roman Catholic, and became a parishioner of Santa Maria church located in the Zerega Avenue neighborhood of the northeast Bronx. I attended school, played on the basketball team, and was an altar server there as well. Santa Maria and St. Raymond’s always had a big rivalry when it came to the basketball season. Growing up I was fortunate enough to have attended several summers the “St. Ray’s” annual basketball training camps where I had the pleasure of meeting both college, and professional basketball players. Besides its beautiful and massive church, Saint Raymond’s has two separate elementary schools, one for boys and one girls, and a high school for boys. Its high school basketball team, “The Ravens” has a great reputation known on a national level. Another thing that I should not fail to mention is St. Raymond’s Cemetery, which is one of the busiest cemeteries in New York City. It is located in the north eastern part of the Bronx in a sector that in ranges from the Bruckner Expressway, Cross Bronx Expressway, the Hutchinson River Parkway and ends in Ferry Point Park by the Whitestone. It has an estimate of 4,000 annual burials.
One of the most influential missionaries within the BBFI is John Birch, whom God brought to the world on May 28th, 1918, in Landour, India. Mike Randall the writer of an article in Our Baptist Heritage about John Birch explains how John Birch’s parents, George Birch and Ethel Birch, taught at Ewing Christian College in Allahabad, India. George suffered from chronic health problems, but that problem did not stop them from completing at least three years of ministry in India.
Fr John Bede Polding a key personality of the Australian Catholic church was born On November 18, 1794 in Liverpool, England. At 11 years of age, he was sent to the Benedictine Monastery of St. Gregory and was educated there by Benedictine nuns and monks. After settling in with the Benedictine community he took on their actions and made his vows in 1811 at 12 years of age. After gaining much experience he was ordained priest in 1819 at the age of 25. On the 29th of June 1834 he was ordained as the Bishop of Hierocaesarea. After a few years of his service to the church an appeal was made for him to be appointed as the Bishop of Sydney, Australia. On the 5th of April 1842 he was translated to Sydney, Australia to accommodate the country and spread the word of Jesus Christ. Due to his effortless and hard work he was recognised as not only the first bishop, but also the first Archbishop of Sydney in 1842. Fr John Bede Polding retired on the 10th of January 1874 and died on the 16th of March 1877.
John had a strong background in the Anglican Church, “he never wavered in his own sense of loyalty. He loved the church of England dearly, gloried in its treasures, pined over its faults, and worked mightily to goad it into a deeper spirituality and into a more effective service to God” (p. 4, Abraham). John “inherited a rich theological tradition and was steeped in its way of piety and ritual. He spent most of his life in Anglican educational institutions, first as a student and then as a lecturer in Logic and Greek (p. 4, Abraham). “He was totally immersed in his church’s worship and prayer, shaped in a host of ways by its wonderful intellectual balance, ...
John was one of the first twelve disciples of Jesus and therefore an eye-witness (John 19:35); John brings out the spiritual significance as well as recording the practical aspects of Jesus' works and words. John lived to be older than any of the other writers. It is therefore likely that he was familiar with their accounts and wanted to supplement theirs with additional teaching and miracles by Jesus which had a bearing on the situation towards the end of the first century AD.
