Safety Manager
Background
The safety management profession in engineering was created for the purpose of managing risk through minimizing it to acceptable levels or eliminating it completely. Risk in engineering refers to the probability of occurrence of a failure, and the consequences of the failure. For instance, failure of engineering concepts or designs may result in property damage, injuries, fatalities, and even deaths. The probability of occurrence of failure in engineering is difficult to predict as it could be caused by operator errors, environmental effects, and mechanical failures. Failure emanating from engineering problems can be rare, occasional, or frequent.
Reasons for its Creation
The reason for the creation of the position of a safety manager in engineering is to reduce the frequency of occurrence of failures and to ensure that the consequences of failures do not threaten life or property (Leveson, 2011). The process of safety engineering begins during the early phases of designing a system. Safety managers are charged with the duty of considering, the likely undesirable events that can occur, the conditions that can trigger the occurrence, and to project the accident risk that can be expected from such an occurrence. They then specify the safety mitigation requirements that should be implemented. They may propose changes to in-service products or CAD designs to make the system safer. Their main objective, when making proposals, is to lower the accident risk or to eliminate all potential hazards (Son & Gal, 2011). When it comes to safety most people think they are safe, and they have a true understanding on how to work safe. Human nature prevents us from harming ourselves. Our instincts help protect us from harm. Yet everyday there are injuries and deaths across the world due to being unsafe. What causes people to work unsafe is one of the main challenges that face all Safety Managers across the world.

Risk management is the system in which companies assess potential liabilities within an organization (Raso, Gulinello, 2011). Through this process information is gathered, assessed, and implemented to avoid these potential risk. Risk managers are beneficial to their organizations because not only do they save money but they can also save lives. In the hospital setting where mistakes can cost someone their lives, risk managers work to develop protocols to help prevent human error. Information is gathered through the process of evidence based practice as well as guidelines in place by best practice. Not only do they help protect the lives of the patients within the facilities, they are also responsible for ensuring staff safety. A risk manager’s responsibility is multi-faceted and complex. They will prevent potential litigations by implementing patient safety protocols, reduce risk to associates, and reduce cost to the organizations.

A great part of the manager’s responsibility would be to try and make the workplace safe that would instill the employee’s desire to work safely. With safety rules in place, reviewed, and enforced it is important for a manager to make sure they are known and understood by the staff. • Explain what causes unsafe acts.
Creating a Culture of Safety. A culture of safety includes psychological safety, active leadership, transparency, and fairness. As a health care professional, I can create a culture of safety by having a positive attitude and creating an environment within the team that feeds off that optimistic and encouraging behavior. In addition, I can contribute to a culture of safety by using effective communication, the “Fairness Algorithm” to differentiate between system error and unsafe behaviors, and by being respectful and approachable to all my fellow coworkers and patients.
Process FMEA analyzes the transactional processes and focuses on defects. System FMEA is used to analyze subsystems and systems for concepts and designs, but focues on the failure modes associated with the functions of the systems (Smith, n.d.). Design FMEA analyzes the design component, while the failures are derived from identified causes from the system FMEA. With these three types of process, the organization can assess the adequacy of the process and captures the relationships. How does the role of risk management suit into the current hospital operations? Risk management is a hybrid task joining several disciplines by reducing the occurrences of organizational damage. Health care FMEA is a technique used widely for assessing and identifying risks of client injury from possible system failures. Risk management purpose is to prevent and reduce the frequency and severity of potential losses. Loss prevention programs promote avoidance of losses, measuring the loss frequency. Some examples are safety programs implemented to prevent workplace injuries, fire detectors, burglar alarms, and other protective devices to prevent losses caused by fire and theft. Insurance companies offer discounts to organization or individuals taking loss prevention measures as incentive for their participation.

A candidly of risk occurs in every organisation. Governance principals and the occupational health and safety urge that the organisations take reasonable measures to hinder loss, charge or rage to the organisational and all stakeholders/management. Injury and accidents can even happen ultimately with stringent OHS and the fact that an accident when occurs, does not mean that someone is liable if all responsible steps for prevention or minimisation has been taken.
Regulation compliance, employee safety, fire safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, hazardous waste removal, training procedures, and management relations are samples of features taken into consideration during a Safety Major’s day. Though there are numerous specializations safety professions can choose, a base knowledge in all fields is essential for a successful career. Therefore, I intend to pursue a continuation of safety certifications that will demonstrate a persistent ability to learn about my career. For the initial duration of my profession, I hope to obtain an Environmental Health and Safety specialist entry level position for an established organization. Risk Management allows us to identify the problems which are unknown during the start of the project but may occurs later. Implementing an efficient risk management plan will ensure the better outcome of the project in terms of cost and time.
