Sadism and Masochism: When They are Acceptable and Unacceptable
Introduction
Sadism and Masochism can both be classified as sexual paraphilias. They also quite often go hand and hand. Although sadism and masochism can be acceptable at certain times, they can also be highly unacceptable. This is dependent on how strong the person has the sexual paraphilia. Also, these paraphilies can be a problem if it causes significant problems for that person outside the bedroom. There are also many ways to diagnose these paraphilies. Even though problems can occur with both sexual paraphilias there are solutions to these problems.
What is Sadism?
Sadism is the term used for people that obtain sexual pleasure from causing pain, suffering, or humiliation,

The most popular activities for sadomasochists are flagellation and bondage (Griffiths, M. 2012). Also, under sadomasochism there is a variety of minor activities that has a greater possibility of physical harm. These include: piercings, hypoxyphilia, fisting, knife play, and electric shocks (Griffiths, M. 2012). Sadomasochism can be classified into four different subdivisions depending on the kind of pain administered and collected. These include typical pain administration, humiliation, physical restriction, and hyper-masculine pain administration (Griffiths, M. 2012). Typical pain administration involves things like spanking, caning, whipping, skin branding, and electric shocks (Griffiths, M. 2012). Humiliation has things like verbal humiliation, gagging, face slapping, and flagellation (Griffiths, M. 2012). Physical restriction includes things like bondage, handcuffs, chains, wrestling, use of ice, strait jackets, hypoxyphilia, and mummifying (Griffiths, M. 2012). Lastly, hyper-masculine pain administration includes rimming, dildo use, cock binding, being shit or urinated on, being given an enema, fisting, and having a catheter inserted (Griffiths, M. 2012). Like sadism and masochism, sadomasochism can be harmful and dangerous at …show more content…
2014). The diagnosis of sexual sadism is complex and several factors have to be taken into consideration. The diagnosis for sadism is determined from the results of a psychiatrist's interview with the person (Fahmy, A. 2014). A reason why it can be hard to diagnose or treat is because most people with this paraphilia refuse therapy. Another reason it can be hard to diagnose is because sexual sadism may result in problems with the legal system. That is why sometimes it may have to be court ordered (Fahmy, A. 2014). Also, some people drove by the fear that their employers or family members my find out so they seek help (Fahmy, A. 2014). Another reason they may look for help is because their spouse or partner might be uncomfortable with their desires are and what they need sexually. Overall, for sexual sadism to be diagnosed as a problem it has to occur for the minimum of six months, the person has performed these acts on another with no consent, or the person with sexual sadism has undergone obvious suffering or has interpersonal issues (Fahmy, A. 2014). One of the most often used treatments for sadism is behavior therapy. This treatment may involve dealing with and controlling arousal patterns and masterbation (Fahmy, A. 2014). Also, therapies that have mental rebuilding and social skills training are used at treatment for this paraphilia
When a late adolescent or adult is primarily or exclusively attracted to a minor child sexually they become diagnosed with the psychiatric disorder pedophilia. Mostly a person is not diagnosed with this disorder unless they have had this attraction for six months or longer. This attraction can be in the form of fantasies which are sexually arousing to the perpetrator, or the urge to engage in sexual activities with a minor child. In addition, in order to be diagnosed the molester will have to have acted on these urges or suffered from some type of distress, which will be result from having these feelings. Also the molester should be at least sixteen years old with the victim being younger than them by a minimum of five years.
To be more specific, the body pain seems to be the route in order to find the true knowledge and can be shown as tow types- the martyrdom and the punishment, which are considering as voluntary behavior and compulsory behavior. Unlike physical pain, the psychological pain will be crueler, especially for women. Under the law and also because of the female body probably more inferior than male, women could only experience lighter punishment. However, they will lose the chance to gain true knowledge. Furthermore, Krik have gave some more examples of gendering pain like sexual molestation and the requirement of female corporal
Wendy Doniger and Sudir Kakar call the sexually violent Kama Sutra ‘bright and shiny,’ but when people hear the words ‘bright and shiny’ sexual violence is not usually paired together with those terms. This idea of ‘bright and shiny’ contrasts the idea of intercourse being ‘dark and heavy.’ Sexual violence can be relatively cheerful though it lacks emotional eroticism. Emotional eroticism is not so constrained and is more focused around the idea of love. The violence used during intercourse helps one to obtain continuity through physical eroticism. Bataille said, “Physical eroticism has in any case a heavy, sinister quality. It holds on to the separateness of the individual in a rather selfish and cynical
The personification of sadomasochistic ideals in the novel comes from Martin Vanger, head of the Vanger companies and, unknown to everyone, a serial rapist and murderer. For example, Vanger may very well have felt that his father, Gottfried Vanger, by raping him as a child, had forced him to not only become the man he became, but to accept his “fate.” Stekel and Brink also explained why many serial sadomasochists kill their victims, something he labeled the death clause. The death clause explained the idea of “the parapathic amalgamation of death and normal intercourse” (Stekel and Brink 2: 246). That is, that the algolagnic behavior is so ingrained into their mind, that they can only derive normal sexual pleasure through the ultimate pain one can inflict, death. The death clause is something that Vanger seemed to very much experience, and it would explain not only his torture chamber, but why he killed almost every girl he raped.
Ted Bundy’s style of killing describes sexual sadism. Sexual sadism is the intense sexually arousal by the thought or act of inflicting suffering on others by dominating, restraining, blindfolding, cutting, strangling, mutilating, or even killing the victim (Comer, 2011). This condition would fall under Axis I because it causes significant impairment.
Some psychologist believe that if a serial killer displays or kills his victims in such a way then it qualifies as fulfilling as sexual desire. These killers are usually diagnosed with a mental disorder referred to as sexual sadism. Psychologists refer to serial killers who kill in this manner as sexual sadist. A sexual sadist enjoys the ‘suffering or embarrassment of others to the point of arousal’ (Serial Killers and Sexual Sadism). Sociologists believe that a serial killer needs to “fulfil a sexual desire by turning a fantasy into a controllable reality” (Serial Killers: Nature vs. Nurture). Sadist crave the dominance and control over their victims because they feel as if they cannot control other aspects of their life. Another biological factor derives within the DNA of the person. Many killers have the “MAO-A gene (monoamine oxidase A). This gene, which has been the target of considerable research, is also known as the "warrior gene" because it regulates serotonin in the brain. Serotonin affects your mood — think Prozac — and many scientists believe that if you have a certain version of the warrior gene, your brain won't respond to the calming effects of serotonin (A Neuroscientist Uncovers a Dark Secret).” With this gene psychologist and scientist alike believe that this can foretell a serial killer before he becomes a serial
...pe, both sex and aggression become fused together into a single experience called sadism. There is a transformation of anger and power so that aggression becomes erotic. This offender finds the intentional mistreatment of his victim extremely gratifying and takes pleasure in her torment and suffering (Hazelwood 1).
For example, In the case of Jacob, an ordinary guy who faces many obstacles including the focus of his desire for women 's feet. It seems impossible to define normal sexual behaviors because sexual behaviors that are considered normative vary within the cultural context of the culture and other factors. For instance, in Jacob 's case, there seems to be a deviation involving the object of his sexual attraction. Jacob 's intense sexual desire to touch, to gaze upon, and to suck women 's feet displays an inconsistency to what contemplates as normal sexual desire and behavior among man in his cultural context. For instance, when comparing Jacob 's sexual desire of women 's feet to what was considered normal among men, which were breast, legs, buttocks, and genitals. It seems that there is a distinct deviation in Jacob 's desires from the norm. To further expand, wanting to press his cock against women 's feet demonstrates the intensity of having a fetishistic disorder. Jacob 's erotic distortions made him feel hideous and mortified by his longing. Jacob meets the full criteria for a fetishistic disorder. His sexual arousal is focused on nongenital body parts, which is manifested by fantasies, urges, and behaviors. Jacob 's fetish is causing him significant distress and impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning. For instance, Jacob no longer engages in sexual intercourse with his wife, and thus, his marriage has been
What is more, for young girls it can be a real shock. As the father of a daughter, I wouldn’t like her to see something like this. It may influence the psychological state of a child. Apparently, it is offensive. So, I am convinced that individuals who practice such behavior should be punished. To deal with this kind of paraphilia, I would recommend cognitive-behavioral therapies to reduce recidivism because it is an obsession for offenders. The therapist can help patients suffering from exhibitionism control factors that trigger such behavior.
There are multiple criteria that come into play when determining a psychological disorder. One reason is because, it is hard to know for sure if an action is abnormal or not. Something could be abnormal in our country, but a custom in another.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMIV), defines pedophilia as a person having an intense and recurrent sexual urges towards and fantasies about prepubescent children and on which feelings they have either acted or which cause distress or interpersonal difficulty.
Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT combines both psychotherapy and behavioral therapy, in a goal-oriented treatment that attempts to change the patterns of thinking or behaviors. CBT is used to treat a wide variety of issue’s that a client may face, including substance abuse, anxiety, and/or depression. First introduced in the 1960’s by Aaron Beck who at the time noticed that clients appeared to have internal dialogues that appeared negative in nature (Martin, 2016). Beck would pick up that these negative thoughts were unrealistic in nature and attempt to dissuade the client from continuing with them and to develop strategies to address these thoughts. CBT is accomplished through short-term treatment, ranging from five to ten months on a weekly basis (Martin, 2016). The goal in utilizing CBT is to “increase control over problematic sexual interests and to equip them with the skills and attitudes necessary to achieve their goals in health and prosocial ways (Murphy, Bradford, Fedorff, 2014)”. Relapse prevention, in which our textbook briefly states as a learning to accept mistakes (Levine, 2016, p.175) does not appear to delve deeper into the treatment that is relapse prevention. In another search of this treatment method, goals of relapse prevention attempt to “identifying, anticipating, and coping with triggers that may lead to a potential relapse or re-offense (Murphy, Bradford, Fedorff,
Staats, P.S., Hekmat, H., & Staats, A.W. (2004). The psychological behaviorism theory of pain and the
The way that a sexual fetish is first developed within a person has been debated but the general consensus among physiologists is that they begin at an early age generally after some kind of event or trauma. Fetishes can also start once a person reaches adulthood, but this is rare. Most of the individuals with fetishes are men and the intensity of the need for the object or body part they enjoy can very. Some people like to enjoy their fetish rarely while ot...
Realistically, anything can become fetish, which is what accounts for the often-bizarre stories reported about sexual deviance involving fetishism. All fetishes are categorized into three main categories: partialism, material fetishism, and object fetishism (LeVay et al., 2015). The most common of fetishes are categorized in partialism, involving fetishes that are associated with the human body. These types of fetishes are called inanimate fetishes and involve parts of the human body where individuals have a fetishistic focus on one specific part of the body in order to achieve sexual gratification. Most commonly, this is centered on things such as feet, armpits and calves (LeVay et al., 2015).
