There are many stories we learned about Sacagawea traveling with Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Sacagawea was friendly, noble, and helpful for navigation. Not only did she guide Lewis and Clark during the expedition, but she communicated with other native tribes. She was the main food gatherer because she knew what types of lands provided specific roots and berries to survive. Sacagawea is the reason Lewis and Clark traveled safely and healthy from Fort Mandan, to Fort Clatsop, and then to St Louis. She is a significant piece to history because she led America’s most cherished mission into the wilderness and reshaped myths of Native Americans being savages into heroes. They traveled from Fort Mandan to Yellowstone river. Besides keeping peace between Natives and the explorers, Sacagawea contributed by digging roots, finding edible plants, and picking berries. On the journey, their boat tipped over. Sacagawea dove into the water and saved most of their valuables, journals, and important paperwork. From Yellowstone River to Maria’s River, they entered present day Montana. At the mouth of Maria’s River, they establish Camp Deposit. They settled for two weeks, and then pushed on for more exploration. They then followed Maria’s River to the Great falls. They established a canoe camp to build new canoes for a metal boat that had failed them. After the Great Falls, they found Shoshone. Sacagawea was very helpful with interpreting because Shoshone was her first language. A council of explorers and Shoshone meet, where Sacagawea reconnects with her brother. Lewis and Clark buy 29 horses in trade for rifle, powder, balls, and a pistol. After making this deal, they move on and cross the Continental Divide. They claim Oregon County and then meet the Salish tribe. Lewis and Clark purchase thirteen more horses. On this long journey, they became starved. At desperate times, they ate their horses, candles, and soup. This is when they decided to build five canoes, and leave the rest of their horses and goods behind.
