In the recruitment process, organizations such as, SBCUSD, strive to attract individuals on a timely basis and retain the most qualified employees to ensure that the best services are provided for its consumers. With many programs and over 70 schools to service, Mr. Wiseman, has a very important role. He needs to find the personal to staff these schools and account for all extra-curricular activities so that they run as smoothly as possible and within budget. In order for an organization to reach their staffing needs employers begin their search with an employee requisition that specifies the details of the position being pursued. At its core, the training and development of a company is the continuous effort to improve employee competency and organizational performance and these concepts are being executed expertly by the SBCUSD. The SBCUSD offers a mission statement on employee development that reads, “The mission of the Employee Development Department is to implement systems of professional growth that engage, develop and retain high performing employees through onboarding, professional development and individualized support.” In addition, there is a vision statement that reads, “The vision of the Employee Development Department is that every district employee will produce exemplary outcomes by building trust and consistently and effectively serving others.” In our research we examined the means in which the SBCUSD meets these expectations. We found training methods that include colleges, universities, and online higher education, as well as developmental programs such as onboarding, Teacher Induction Program (TIP), peer assistance review (PAR), and the Demonstration Teacher Program. Obviously, the countries major Universities that we are all familiar with lead the pack in training professionals, but community colleges have also become a viable tool for training professionals. Community colleges are publicly funded and deliver vocational training as well as associate degree programs. “Community colleges have always played an important role in higher education because they are often perceived as the most accessible point of entry into a college system. In a job environment where college degree holders earn significantly more per week than high school grads, and have much lower unemployment rates, the demand for an accessible education has never been higher,” (Dumbauld, 2015). Attendance at a technical college or local 2-year school was deplorably referenced to as “loser’s territory” and if you dared to enroll in one anyway and followed through to graduation, well you were congratulated but to a lackluster fanfare. Some community college graduates still receive this reception upon exit of a community college but attitudes are definitely changing. Today more than ever, degree-seeking individuals are paving the path to their careers through the entrance and exit doors of community colleges. These well-informed leaders of the new school have realized a smarter way to education; that a bachelor’s degree or taking a traditional route to obtain one is not necessarily the best or right way to be a successful and employable member of society.
The second year of the college recruitment program, Marianne wisely sought the advice of others experienced in successful recruiting from college campuses. By following the advice to reduce the schedule, identify job descriptions, develop questions specific to positions as well as focused interview forms to be completed along with incentives linked to performance pay the college recruitment efforts should be more successful.
