Rugby is Better than Sex
An imitation of “Surfing is better than sex”
I USED TO LOOK AT THE SENIOR BOYS PLAYING ‘THAT ROUGH’ GAME rugby and just wonder at the courage that they possessed. Never in my mind did I see myself as a rugby player. It is true I was bigger than many of the people on the team but that did not mean I had half the courage. That was way back in my first years at Budo high school. Then one day, a rugger by the name of Yustus reached out to me. “KESA”, he called out my nickname. “You should try out rugby with us one of these days”, he added.
Rugby is a very small club sport at Lafayette and has a lot of challenges. During orientation, I accidentally met up with a team member called Mike who told me about Lafayette rugby. He told me that the team did not have a coach and “we are trying to get in as many freshmen as possible”. I replied that I had a lot of experience, having played rugby for about 5 years, and I would love to join. When we had our first rugby meet, it was on a small quad in front of one of the nine fraternities. This quad was the antithesis of the real big fields I was used to; one could hardly run a forty-yard dash on it. Well, after a couple of weeks playing on the quad, we were able to head out to Metzgar fields. These are a set of fields for lacrosse, soccer, baseball, and football practice and there is also provision for rugby. In the middle of all other sports grounds, our rugby team found a somewhat full size field.
The first engagement we had for the season was a home match against Lehigh University and this was one of best games for the entire season. We went into this game as the underdogs, but that did not inhibit my team from maneuvering well. We were not expected to win, so all we did is have fun giving Lehigh a decent challenge. On many occasions, I would run with the ball and stop just a couple of yards away from the goal line. My teammates were always there to support me whenever I went with the ball. I remember one time when a Lehigh player broke through the scrum and was heading towards our goal.
High School, a place where most talents are revealed and where opportunities are offered/ taken, a place that determines young Australians views towards sports, and the on-going process of producing young Australian athletes. However with the young teenager’s misconception of what an athlete “looks” like they start to compare their self image to that of what the media portrays, which is your typical skinny, lean and handsome/pretty model. This causes a low level of self confidence within an individual as this is focused on the individual level. The cultural level of Figueroa’s framework plays a big part in upbringing of an individual into society. With Wavell’s culture typical stereotypes that continue to...
To begin with, there are four types of complementary and alternative medicine, which are categorized by Tataryn based on their own approaches (Kelner, Wellman, n.d.). While the first one is called Body, which focuses on diets, herbs and manipulation, the second type concentrates on thoughts and visions, called Body Minded. Body-Energy (Kelner, Wellman, n.d.). The third type, is about acupuncture, cure by touch (Kelner, Wellman, n.d.). The last one is Body-Spirit, using faith and prayers to cure (Kelner, Wellman, n.d.). Researches are being conducted by experts to determine whether CAM is safe enough to be in use and its effectiveness. Having said that, it is never easy to conclude these benefits. Experts are having troubles with some treatments like prayer. Despite all of its limitation, Canada is still p...
It would be interesting to see the upbringing of these three characters and if in fact, they correspond to their later actions. Even if they don’t correspond, there can be exceptions to Lacan’s theory. It doesn’t necessarily disprove it.
Rosa Parks was an African American woman who was brave enough to stand up to the whites. Even though she went to jail for what she did, she believes she did the right thing. What Rosa had done on the bus started boycotts and created more and more activists. People wonder if Rosa Parks was raised to stand up for herself or if she was supposed to stay quiet. Looking at Rosa’s life and what happened on the bus and beyond, it can be concluded that she was taught to take pride in her race.
“Rosa Parks was small as a child and suffered poor health with chronic tonsillitis. Her parents separated when she was young, so her and her mother moved to Pine Level which is right outside the capital of Montgomery. There she grew up with her grandparents and her mom on a farm” (Matthews). “She experienced a lot of racial discrimination on the farm like the time her grandpa stood on their front porch with a shotgun while the Klu Klux Klan marched down their street” (Wikipedia). “Also Rosa Parks and her family were members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, an old independent black denomination founded by free blacks in Philadelphia in the early 19th century. Parks attended Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes for secondary education, but she then dropped out to take care of her mother and grandmother when they became ill. She married Raymond Parks in 1932; both of them were active in civic affairs. Earning her living as a seamstress, she served as the secretary of the Montgomery branch of the NAACP” (Matthews).
The civil rights activist, Rosa Parks was born Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Rosa’s childhood brought her early experiences with racial discrimination and activism for racial equality. After her parents separated, Rosa’s mother moved the family to Pine Level, Alabama to live with her parents. Rosa’s mother taught her to read at a young age. When she was younger Rosa attended many segregated schools. In 1929, she attended a laboratory school for secondary education led by the Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes. Then she had to leave school to take care of her mother and grandmother. However, Rosa never returned to her studies; instead, she got a job at a shirt factory in Montgomery. In 1932, at age 19, Rosa met and married Raymond Parks. He was an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Later on, Rosa earned her high school degree in 1933. She soon became actively involved in civil rights issues by joining the Montgomery chapter of the NACCP in 1943.
Mankind has always found a way to better and prolong our lives through science and medicine. With the growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that has occurred over the last decade, one could easily say that “unconventional,” or non-Westernized, approaches to healing must be a new phenomenon never before seen in American society or around the world. The reality is, however, that the current rise in fashionability for unorthodox treatments is merely the latest of three waves of mainstream popularity in the past century-and-a-half (the first was the mid-1800s, the second the early 1900s in the United States). Although it is true that the present environment differs in certain critical respects from previous times, there are still plenty of parallels in which historical patterns are mirrored across time by the interest in CAM today. Alternative medicine can be defined as “medicine not prescribed by a medical professional and used more so as therapeutic remedies.” The difference between CAM and western medicine is that
When she refused to surrender her seat to a white passenger, she took a stand for everybody in America facing racial discrimination. “Although Parks was not the first resident of Montgomery to refuse to give up her seat to a white passenger, local civil rights leaders decided to capitalize on her arrest as a chance to challenge local segregation laws.” (Montgomery Bus Boycott). When Parks was arrested, “she remained at a great physical risk while held by the police”, due to the police brutality faced by African Americans at the time (An Act of Courage, The Arrest Records of Rosa Parks). The arrest of Rosa Parks led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a year-long protest between colored people and the city’s public transportation. The protest was led partly by Martin Luther King Jr., and with the help of Rosa Parks, it would become one of the most important parts of the Civil Rights movement. Parks’ conviction would later be overturned by the Supreme Court, after an appeal filed by her lawyer stated “racial segregation of public buses was unconstitutional.” (An Act of Courage, The Arrest Records of Rosa Parks). By standing for what she believed in, Rosa Parks caught the attention of the Supreme Court and helped push for desegregation in the United States.

Each summer when I was young, my mom would sign up for me and my brother to try out different sports. And one of the summer, my mom told us we are going to play a sport called rugby. When I first started to play rugby, I didn’t know what this sport was about. First day of practice, the field was filled a few puddle of mug because it was raining the day before. Therefore, we all try to avoid to get ourselves dirty by avoiding the muggy spot. As we were learning how to pass the ball and running around with the ball in our hands. The coach stopped us and tell us all to roll ourselves into the puddle of mug, because he see us all are afraid of getting dirty. He also tell us that if we want to play this sport, we can’t be afraid of getting dirty. That day I found out that rugby is a very interesting sport and also very dirty. After that summer, I start to like rugby and want to get better at it. Therefore, I joined a team to play with. At first I thought rugby was just a sport where players have to carry the ball and getting themselves dirty. But then I found out there tackles and different position and plays we have to learn. At first tackle is quite painful, but as I keep playing my shoulder got stronger and used to
Rosa Parks is famous for a lot of things. But, she is best known for her civil rights action. This happen in December 1,1955 Montgomery, Alabama bus system. She refused to give up her sit to a white passenger on the bus. She was arrested for violating a law that whites and blacks sit in separate sit in separate rows.
The widespread use of alternative medicine nowadays has driven scientists to study it and understand the reasons of the high demand for unconventional treatment. According to Zollman C, and Vickers A. (1999), complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) can be defined as therapeutic and diagnostic disciplines which are exogenous of the institutions where modern methods of treatment are exist and taught. Eisenberg D. (1993), defines CAM as “medical interventions which are commonly not taught at medical schools and not generally provided at hospitals in the US”. These two definitions are not fully satisfactory because, firstly, some forms of CAM which were tested by scientists and appeared to be safe and effective and found a place in conventional medical mainstream. Secondly, CAM is not about medical intervention, which means impacts of taken drugs. The majority of CAM is based on psychology, spirituality, sociology and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which make trials difficult. However, despite the fact that conventional medicine is scientific based and proven by science, many people still use alternative medicine instead or as a compliment to the modern one. Research shows that the majority of the patients at an Accident and Emergency department used to refer to some forms of CAM. (Waterbrook A.L, 2008). Other studies show that over the period of the last 20 years an increase in interest in CAM was observed. Approximately 30% of the UK population (Ernst, 1996) and almost the same in the USA (Kuhn, 1999, Wooton and Sporber, 2001) have used alternative medicine. Referring to these sources it is seen that the demand for CAM remains high nowadays; however, the importance here is not to evaluate the reasons why people still use...
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), states that the CAM field is very broad and constantly changing. NCCAM defines CAM as a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine. (para.2)
The use of alternative medicine in health care should be taken seriously as they can improve a person’s health without the serious side effects of conventional medication; alternative medicine is becoming increasingly popular throughout the United States and it also focuses on prevention rather than intervention. Alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. Usually alternative medicine is lumped together with complementary medicine which, instead of being used instead of conventional medicine, is used along with it, and abbreviated together as CAM. The controversy surrounding CAM practices is quite prevalent in the health care world. Many conventional practicing physicians believe that alternative methods of treatment such as herbs, vitamins, yoga, chiropractic etc…are not a viable choice because they are dangerous or because they simply do not help. Despite the naysaying’s of these physicians CAM practices have become increasingly popular throughout the population, with people looking for more organic, less harmful approaches to health care. Most of the CAM practices have been proven in studies and the people receiving them have significant beneficial results.
This summer I switched teams from varsity soccer, a sport I had played for fifteen years, to varsity rugby, a sport I had never played before. I was both ecstatic and nervous. Nonetheless, I deep down knew that rugby would be a better fit for me. Throughout all the sports I have played in my life (gymnastics, snowboarding, swimming, lacrosse, and basketball to name a few), I was always the aggressive, self-sacrificing, and one of the most passionate players of the team. Sometimes it was a good thing, like when I would protect my players from sloppy opponents. Other times it was a bad thing, like when I would foul out of my basketball games. Playing rugby, I have never felt too aggressive or big. As one of the bigger players on my team, it is
