THE PENTAGON OFFICE OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF CODE WORD SENSATIVE – FOR THE PRESIDENT’S EYES ONLY MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT From: Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, CJCS Subject: OPERATION: PINAFORE DATE: 9/15/14 Issue for Decision Mr. President, I am sure you are well aware of Scotland’s impending referendum on independence. Though it is still uncertain whether or not the Scots will vote yea or nay, a yea vote presents an immediate opportunity to bolster our national security. The Royal Navy’s Trident nuclear submarine program is located at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland. Upon voting for independence, Scotland and London will negotiate an agreement for the removal of the subs. Her Majesty the Queen will then require a new home for her four Vanguard …show more content…
There are several locations at which Trident can be housed until the fleet is retired at the end of the 2020’s. The primary challenge for the UK is finding a base capable of both docking Vanguard subs and storing D-5 nuclear warheads. For the sake of maintaining a basic level of independence in terms of national defense, Westminster intends to keep Trident in Great Britain. Unfortunately for them, the cost of renovating Burrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, the building site of the Vanguard subs, to meet the needs of the Trident program would be impractical during a political and economic divorce. Davenport Dockyard, Western Europe’s largest naval base, in Plymouth seems a most proper place to dock the fleet. But, the storage of nuclear warheads in such a densely populated area raises many safety concerns. Another attractive British port which could account for the subs and missiles but raises many safety concerns is Milford Haven in Wales. The port is deep enough, but the traffic is worse than 4:45 on the Beltway. The risk of a collision between a Trident sub and another sub or an oil tanker, next to several oil and gas refineries mind you, should be limited at all …show more content…
The Ministry of Defense have been in talks with France about expanding nuclear cooperation, but Ile Longue is already filled to capacity. It would be a financial burden on France to construct the necessary facilities. Here is where we come in: Kings Bay is unique in that it is already equipped as a Trident base. Our port can accommodate the four Vanguard subs, Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic (SWFLANT) can safely store the D-5 missiles. The only obstacle is convincing Westminster of our loyalty to NATO and the remaining
The Trident Submarine houses twenty-four nuclear warheads with each having a range of 4,600 miles over land. If a nuclear war were to break out between the Soviet Union and the United States, virtually every major city could be destroyed in a matter of hours. The origin of these major players in modern day warfare lies in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
1) The chapter 9, The Military Ascendancy, Mills discusses the increased presence of military personnel in high political positions. However, is this not what our country was founded on? Don’t we have a history of installing military personnel in almost all positions within our government? Only 12 of America’s 43 presidents have not served in the military, even congress has a larger percentage of veterans, compared to our population. Our history as a nation is built on military diplomacy, not professional diplomats. Have we not always used the “buddy-system” to leverage careers in politics? Why is this so surprising to Mills?
With this in mind, there is no real need to protect it from the sea. Although Dunwich was once a major port, almost all of the historic remains have already fallen into the sea. Another reason for not protecting Dunwich is because the material that is eroded from those cliffs is carried south by long shore drift and helps to prevent erosion further down the coast. This is particularly important with the presence of the Sizewell nuclear power plants 5 miles south of Dunwich. If hard protection were used at Dunwich, then this would cause the cliffs at Sizewell to erode much quicker and possibly cause a risk to the nuclear power plants and the town.
The critical leadership problem facing the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) is disengaged leadership has created a unit culture tolerant of sub-standard and inappropriate behavior of and indifference. While deployed 4th ABCT’s leadership fostered an elitist unit culture, tolerant of, and indifferent to individual development and personal needs. The demands of the short notice deployment coupled with the SFAT mission change create a stressful environment and planted seeds of separation within the Brigade Combat Team (BCT). The change from offensive operations to security and stability operations negated the Mission Essential tasks 4th ABCT completed during their Mission Readiness Exercise and resulted in 4th ABCT not receiving
‘’The only easy day was yesterday’’, is a famous saying for recruits that are doing physical training and mental challenges to become Navy Seals. Who are the Navy Seals? What do they do? Well, the name Navy Seal is named after the environment in which they operate, sea, air and land and there are the foundation of Special Warfare combat forces. They are organized, trained and equipped to conduct a variety of special operations missions. (Navy SEALs: Special Operations for the U.S. Navy. )
In the thirty-eight years of the United States Naval Submarine Service no United States submarine had ever sunk an enemy vessel. With the ignition of the Second World War the poorly equipped and poorly trained Silent Service, nicknamed for the limited access of the media to the actions and achievements of the submarines, would be thrust into the position American submariners had longed for. The attack on Pearl Harbor left the United States Navy with few options for retribution. The three remaining aircraft carriers were to be “the last line of defense.” Commander Stuart S. Murray made the precarious situation clear to his skippers, captains, upon sending them on their first war patrol. He stressed the importance of smart sailing by warning them not “to go out there and win the Congressional Medal of Honor in one day. The submarines are all we have left.” We entered the war with 55 submarines, 27 at Pearl Harbor and 28 at Cavite in the Philippines. At first our submarine strategies lacked ingenuity and failed to use our subs to their full potential. United States subs were assigned to reconnaissance, transporting supplies, and lifeguard duty, picking up downed airmen and sailors. They were even, on occasion, sent to rescue high profile Americans on the run from the enemy or from islands under enemy siege. Although their ability was, unfortunately, wasted in our entrance to the Pacific Theater the Silent Service would soon gain the recognition its men yearned for.
The Early Modern Era saw great change in the field of naval technology. Exploration and the desire to expand trade fueled the development of new, more effective naval vessels. These vessels, in turn, contributed to the growth of worldwide trade and interconnection that marked the period.
The book opens with K-129 at a position of “24 degrees N and 163 degrees west,”(11) this places the submarine northwest of the US naval base at...
The Role of the Royal Marines During World War One The Royal Marines were formed in 1664. They were formed as part of the Navy to keep order on board the men-of-war, to provide the Navy with a raiding force but mainly to deal with the Dutch, who were the combatant in 1664. The Marines have always been a flexible force, fighting on land and on sea, a skill which has made them one of the most advanced forces of modern warfare, a weapon in their own right. This essay looks at the role that the Royal Marines played during and surrounding World War One. Prior to the outbreak of World War One, the last action that the Marines had seen was during the Boer war of 1898 - 1901 however the use of the Corps came under huge criticism as assault infantry for they were "expensive products . . .
Loyalty, Duty, Service, Honor, Integrity, Courage, Commitment. The seven Army values, the three Navy core values, and the three Air Force core values: each branch of service possesses a codification of values and characteristics embodied by servicemen and women for generations; simply picking a handful of these qualities presents a logical and justifiable option for defining the essential qualities of a military officer. It is true an officer must personify and uphold such values, however, interpersonal skills and self-confidence are also invaluable traits necessary for the highest level of leadership and excellence demanded of a military officer.
To begin with, if they achieve their ultimate aim of Scottish independence, the SNP want to withdraw public spending from what they consider “unessential” expenses, e.g. the military, with particular emphasis on Trident, our nuclear deterr...
The application of nuclear power systems to the strategic defense was predicted on assumptions and increasingly were subject to question:
Ukraine is a nation that voluntarily disposed its nuclear arsenal and ICBMs . In Mid nineties it was the possessed the third largest nuclear arsenal. Though the disposal of nuclear arsenal was n't taken for granted, it involved an economic incentives. If ukraine had those nuclear weapons , there would have a minimum credible deterrence. The history of warships goes back in history to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Their ships were called galleys. The galleys were powered by oarsmen. The galley had a sharp point in the front for ramming other ships. In the A. D. 700's, the Vikings invented the long ship. It weighed less than the galley and was stronger and more seaworthy. The Viking's controlled the seas until the 1000's. By the 1500's most warships carried guns, and later became heavily armed ships.
