Rotational programs allow employees to move through various positions within the company or among departments. It enables them to gain knowledge in other disciplines. It is about settling employees at the right place where they can deliver the maximum results. Although, I am assigned to the contracting group, I thought doing a rotational would be pointless, but immediately I had a change of heart. If utilized properly it has the potential to be a very powerful Human Resource strategy. While participating in the rotational I inspected an F-16 canopy at Texstars and several radar pods at Raytheon. Being a Quality Assurance Representative at DCMA is no dainty task; every nut, bolt, screw, and surface must be thoroughly combed to insure no defect is found. If a defect goes unidentified, the damages can be costly to both the warfighter and the Federal Government. Despite the responsibility, it was a very exciting experience, because a day in the life of a QAR is never the same. One day you could be counting the stitching on military uniform and the next you could be inspecting thousands of nuts and bolts. The rotational gave me an opportunity to explore and cultivate interest, and provided a great source of motivation. In my opinion working within the Contracting Group is rather mundane. I felt it was extremely difficult for me to really engage in the work, because it wasn’t challenging or engaging. Going to the facility and seeing how all the processes at DCMA are interconnected, aided in my understanding of the pre-and post-award of contracts.
