Root surface caries are also called cemental caries, cervical caries, or radicular caries. (Wilkins) Root surface caries only involves the roots of teeth. The cementum and dentin located just below the crown of the tooth is involved. No involvement of enamel is seen with root surface caries. Bone loss and corresponding gingival recession are the first symptoms to be seen in the caries process. These result in exposed root surfaces, which are more prone to forming caries because caries does not form in the root surface while periodontal fibers are still attached. Clinically, the lesion starts on the root surface. It has been found that root caries spreads in a lateral or circumferential manner, and over time can extend completely around the tooth, undermining the enamel. (Wilkins)
The author made it sound as if you have a cavity you have a disease. A cavity starts out as a small hole in a tooth and gets bigger if it is not treated however, it can become abscessed, with that being said, an abscess it is not a disease, it is a localized pocket of pus (infection). Dental caries can be removed and treated with a filling. A disease of the mouth is called periodontitis and that is an oral disease of the gums that “effects nearly half of the United States population” (American Dental Association 2015). Since no one knew how to take care of their oral health almost everyone had toothaches and all a dentist did was pull out teeth, make false ones to replace the ones that had been pulled out, and put caps on broken teeth. In 1906 a dentist named Alfred Fones, believed he knew why peoples gums hurt and why teeth went bad. Alfred tried telling other dentist and doctors the reason peoples teeth went bad was because they were covered with plaque and tartar and if people would just clean their teeth, their teeth would last longer and their mouths would feel better. But no one believed him, people just didnt see the value in preventive care because preventive care
A traumatic swimming incident during my childhood left me visiting many dental chairs where I suffered from an irrational fear of dentists. Every visit started with my fears but ended with my gratitude to these dentists, who had performed complex operations seamlessly. These experiences stemmed an interest in dental biology exploring topics such as root canal treatments; here I realised that a dental career would allow me to both explore human biology further but also actively improve our society’s welfare.
Children are often sweet and adorable, but many times they may be eating too many sweets. According to the Channel Four News, it has been shown that the number one disease in children is the reoccurrence of caries, also known as cavities. This may be required in cases when the conventional root canal treatment is unable to save the tooth. It is a minor surgical procedure that involves the removal of the very tip of the tooth after which the gap is sealed. An apicoectomy also enables the endodontist to remove any infection or dead debris at the tip of the root. Once the canal is cleaned up and sealed, the risk of infection is very low. In some cases, the endodontist may use bone grafts or other implant techniques to assist with bone growth, especially in cases where the infection has left a big gap.
