When your roof is inspected, the roofer also checks the flashing and vents for damage. This is how they cause problems and how they are repaired. Roof Vents Roof vents are the pipes that stick through your roof that help your plumbing system work properly. They can be made from metal that might rust or plastic that can crack. If the vent is damaged it might be possible to repair it using caulk or another method, especially when repairing a seam. However, your roofer may need to replace the vent to keep it from leaking. Vent Boots The vent boot is a plastic or rubber ring that fits around the bottom of the vent to seal it against the roof so rain can't leak through. After years of sun exposure, the rubber can crack and start leaking. When this happens rain drips down the outside of the pipe and into your house. Corroded flashing may need to be replaced which would require removing the old metal and a few rows of shingles. Flashing with a few holes might be repaired by patching the holes with roofing cement. Loose flashing can be tightened back down with caulk or roofing cement to keep rain from leaking in around the edges.
