Star-crossed lovers, to a preventable dual suicide, this is the tragic tale of “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare. As the author of the play, Shakespeare deems it logical to blame their deaths on fate. Simply, to say Romeo and Juliet’s deaths were the stars’ fault; the story was always destined to end tragically is easy. However, Romeo and Juliet made their own decisions. They made their own choice to fall in love, just like they made other decisions which had consequences. While Shakespeare led the audience to believe that fate is the “dark force” that pulls Romeo and Juliet apart, it is their own choices that cause their deaths. Ultimately this shows that people cannot escape the consequences of their actions.

is that the impulsive choices Romeo made haunted him and eventually caused his death. Romeo and Juliet’s love was jinxed from the beginning. They were star-crossed lovers, but their own actions had dire results. Romeo and Juliet’s love isn’t as mystical as Shakespeare tried to portray it. Instead, their love rests on the shoulders of Romeo, an impulsive, reckless character. Who clearly notices that there “Is crimson in” (V, iii, 95) Juliet’s cheeks and lips. Yet he believes that Juliet is dead because death “had no power yet upon” (V, iii, 93) Juliet’s “beauty.” (V, iii, 93) If for a second Romeo put aside his emotions he would have seen that Juliet is still alive. However, he ignores the liveliness of Juliet as he proceeds to act out his predestined demise. His death leads to Juliet's execution because she won’t live in a world where Romeo is not alive. Romeo chose to “die” (V, iii, 120) as he chose to ignore the blood in Juliet’s face. No external forces such as fate made Romeo kill himself, it was his own rash decision. Their tragic love story isn’t to be blamed on fate, but instead on their own selections because their choices had a larger impact on their love rather than their fate.
However, some may believe that Romeo and Juliet were destined to love, then die. With their families hating each other, and Juliet being engaged to another, they were already destined for a tragic end. To make the situation worse, Romeo and Juliet were children so they had no control over the decisions of adults. Romeo and Juliet's meeting itself was due to an adult, Capulet. During the Capulet party, Capulet decides to leave Romeo “Alone” (I, v, 74) which eventually causes the first meeting of Romeo and Juliet. Capulet, an external force that unknowingly shoves Romeo onto the path of meeting Juliet is defined as fate. Another instance where Romeo and Juliet had no control over the situation was with the letter that Friar John was to deliver to Romeo. Due to the “infectious pestilence” (V, ii, 10) ) Friar John “could not send” (V, ii, 14) the letter. Since the letter was never sent, Romeo had actually thought that Juliet was dead. Although, these outside factors did have an influence on Romeo and Juliet they are minuscule compared to the actions Romeo and Juliet took to choose their own path. Falling in love, getting married, and killing themselves were choices that Romeo and Juliet made. Those choices affected them far more over the choices of
others. The audience was directed to believe fate is the culprit for the tragic end of Romeo and Juliet. However, the truth is Romeo and Juliet could not escape the aftermath of their poor decisions. This proves that people cannot blame their reckless nature on fate when Romeo’s choices have heavy consequences. Romeo’s rash choices led to his death. First, he believes Juliet is dead and he doesn’t wait to check if she really is dead and second, he commits suicide. Fate, on the other hand, gives the push that leads Romeo to meet Juliet, and the letter not being delivered. Fate gave a shove to the wrong direction, but Romeo took it upon himself to make the choices that led to his end. Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” summarizes that the choices we make have an even larger impact on our future than some external force like fate that merely nudges a person into a wide direction.

We have now read both Pyramus and Thisbe, and Romeo and Juliet. The question we have yet to answer is what has a greater impact on what happened, destiny, or personal choice? We believe that personal choice affected the characters more because they chose to fall in love, Romeo and Juliet rushed into marriage, Pyramus and Thisbe left home on their own terms, and in both stories, the main characters decided to commit suicide. This is something that cannot be determined by the stars, your choices determine what happens, not some mystical prophecy. Though that is what we believe, it is also believed that destiny has a greater impact because they were doomed from the stars.

Fate is the controlling force of the events that lead up to, and cause, the deaths of Rome and Juliet. It is no coincidence that Romeo meets the Capulet servant and is invited to the party. Fate brought him to the house of the Capel?s where he was destined to meet his future wife, Juliet. At the risk of being killed, the two lovers married their supposed loathéd enemy and consummated the marriage without even the slightest hint of detection from anyone who did not know of the wedding. Unfortunately, their sweet success would be short lived and their lives would be a downward spiral staring with Romeo?s banishment and ending with their deaths. Life is filled with difficult situations and tough choices to make. The question is, should we choose to make them ourselves? Some people feel it's best to do things alone, while others do not. However, the opinions of people who love us positively affect our choices so it would be smart to consider them in most cases, but not in those that are very personal.
