“Was it Really Love?”
“Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, unquenchable.” (Henry Ward Beecher) Just like in Romeo and Juliet, there are many young people who do not know the meaning of true love. Teenagers can fall in love, it just isn’t very likely that it will last There are many ways that Romeo and Juliet is not the “the most durable and lasting love story ever.” A few reasons being that the two showed infatuation, not love, they were too impulsive, and never had really been in a relationship before meeting each other.

They are around portrayed as teenagers in the story and research shows that kids around that age are full of new hormones they have not yet experienced. These hormones can cause teens to act abnormally and not fully process things. (Hutton) Consequently, in the play Juliet says, “O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” (Romeo and Juliet. 5.3.5) Here we are definitely seeing how spontaneous the decisions they’re making are. Romeo never stopped to think about the consequences of what would have happened to the other people in his life after he died. He only did what he thought was superlative for him because of losing Juliet, when in reality, she wasn’t even dead! All of this happened because they were young teens who made decisions due to impulsive thinking. Moreover, in the movie, Romeo talks about Juliet’s still red cheeks and her warm lips when he kisses her. (Luhrmann) He doesn’t stop to put the pieces together. If the two were older they probably wouldn’t have chosen to kill themselves. Even though someone dies, they would know that there are other people to love in the world and most likely would have not chosen the same outcome. Neither of them had ever really been in a relationship before and neither had ever been in love. The two never experienced true love before, which led to them thinking solely about how durable their love was for each other, when what they should have been thinking was “is this really love?” Also, both of them were in the same boat. It is not like one of them had already been in love which probably made it even harder for the two to address their feelings. Being inexperienced with something can cause a lot of confusion and that can lead to not thinking about what you are doing. “My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand, To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.” (Romeo and Juliet. 1.5.5 ) During this scene, Romeo and Juliet had first met. As soon as they begin speaking with each other he wants to kiss Juliet. Though doesn’t know her yet, Romeo thinks what he feels is love, when he really just sees a beautiful girl. The problem here is that he thinks he is in love with Juliet because of feeling something unfamiliar. A study was done to see how many people would go back to their first love. “Out of 1,600 people, ages 18 to 92, 56% of the participants said they would not want to go back to their first loves.” (Kalish) This just goes to show that experience goes a long way.
