Romeo and Juliet over countless occasions attempt to defy fate, despite their numerous attempts, the two characters ultimately succumb to fate and separate. Their attempts to remain together and fate's desire to pull them apart reside firstly with their marriage. Romeo and Juliet fell in love shortly after meeting one another, with Romeo wooing Juliet at the party and Juliet later asking for marriage despite being in households heated at each other. Fate, determined to keep the lovers separate, attempts to create a rift between them however Juliet overcomes this by simply looking past Montague and loving him. Juliet claims that she is “in truth fair Montague too fond”(II.ii.103). This shows he is willing to throw away his family and their strife against each other. Fate attempts to separate the two lovers once again by creating a situation where Romeo must act out due to his mental state, separating the lovers. During Act Three Scene One, Romeo can be seen next to and watching a fight between Tybalt, a Capulet, and Mercutio, one of his closest friends, unprecedently Romeo witnesses Mercutio being stabbed and killed by Tybalt throwing him into a fit of rage leading him to end up fighting and then killing Tybalt who fled. Due to this, he was banished from Verona, and the two lovers were separated. Finally, the two lovers were permanently separated via death, the two lovers both saw each other dead and took their own lives. Romeo is unlucky in not being able to receive the letter from Friar Lawrence informing him about the plan to fake Juliet’s death. Romeo himself even comments on this saying he is a “fortune fool” taking the fact that fortune or fate is attempting to pull apart the two star-crossed
