Fated for Tragedy: Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet depicts the young lovers' tragic deaths as inevitable from the start, given various aspects of their love story. Romeo's obsessive love leads to impulsive decisions and intense feelings that set the stage for their tragic end. The conflict between the two houses creates a hostile environment that makes their secret love affair risky. However, the looming presence of fate ultimately seals their destiny, revealing that, despite their choices and turn of events, their ending was set in stone. Through these aspects, Shakespeare develops the sense that the suicides of Romeo and Juliet were destined to happen. Shakespeare portrays the conflict in Act 1 Scene 1 where the Prince says, "Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word, By thee, old Capulet, and Montague, Have thrice disturb'd the quiet of our streets."(15). The Prince is scolding the Capulets and Montagues for their ongoing feud, which led to public violence. Romeo and Juliet, as members of two battling families, are caught up in this battle, and their secret love affair is a risky defiance of the rivalry. Another example would be in Act 1 Scene 5 where Tybalt says, "This, by his voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy."(55). Tybalt's eagerness to fight Romeo just because he is a Montague shows the heated tension both families face. The constant threat of violence shows the dangerous situation Romeo and Juliet are in. Furthermore, in Act 3 Scene 1 Mercutio says, "I am hurt. A plague o' both your houses! I am speedy” (121).
