Greece and Rome developed the first republican governments about twenty-five hundred years ago. There is a variety of strengths and weaknesses to go along with the republican system of government. The structure of the Roman republican government is similar to the structure of our government today, but not so much the Greek government system. Roman people were competitive for power, while the people of Greece had widespread, laidback power. Our government today is tightly managed and competitive which makes it interesting about how similar these two forms of republican government are in close relation to us.
The republic system of Rome was organized with great structure that created a balance between all the powers. “The three kinds of government, monarchy, aristocracy and democracy were all found united in the commonwealth of Rome” (Polybius 1:1). The consuls appeared at a time of war and were considered the monarchy art of government. The aristocracy part of the government was known as the Senate, which managed the budget, foreign affairs and crime of Rome. “Athens trusted less in the system and policy than they did in the native spirit of citizens and education; Athens lived exactly as they pleased, yet they were just as ready to encounter all the legitimate danger” (Thucydides 2:39). As stated in the reading of Thucydides, the Greeks had their own ownership in what they wanted to do and structure did not play that big of a role in it. This government was based on a radical democracy, focusing on the network of people’s political stance and power. Multiple people had power which is what helped the city of Greece grow tremendously and strive because it was all based on the people’s way.
