T.j is husky, 14 years old, and is in 7th grade. He can be a great friend. But did anyone know that he can be capable of changing the lives of many people? A good friend is someone that is kind, caring, and sometimes has to risk their life for their friend. In Roll of Thunder Hear my cry by Mildred D. Taylor, T.J. has been friends with 4 kids: Cassie, Stacey, Christopher John, Little Man from a family called the Logans for a very long time. But he is greedy, self-confident, and mean. He has already flunked school more than once because he chose to. Because of T.J.’s inner desires and choices, he has caused a lot of trouble for his family, friends, and community. T.J.’s choices have caused him to break the only friendship he has with the Logans. His choice to get Mom fired didn’t make him a friend to the Logans. “Did you tell it? You tell them Wallaces about Mama? (Taylor 161). You are the one that did it T.J.,” Stacey called over his shoulder. “Now leave us alone. We don’t want no more to do with you (Taylor …show more content…
Papa was the one that set a fire in the fence and part of the cotton to save T.J. “I suddenly knew. I now know why Mr. Morrison had come for Stacey alone, why Mr. Jamison was afraid for Papa to go into town. Papa had found a way, as Mama had asked, to make Mr. Granger stop the hanging: He had started the fire (Taylor 232).” Everyone in the community tried to stop the fire. “Moving across the field, slowly, mechanically, as if sleepwalking, was a flood of men and women dumping shovels of dirt on fire patches that refused to die. They wore wide handkerchiefs over their faces and many wore hats, making it difficult to identify who is who, but it was obvious that the rank of firefighters had swelled up to include all nearby farmers (Taylor 226).” At the end, T.J.’s choices will lead him to a fate worse than being
INTRODUCTION On March 25, 1911, 146 garment factory workers their lives in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. In less than an hour, these workers died from asphyxiation, burns, or jumping to their deaths in a futile attempt at escape (McGuire, 2011). The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory is the eighth through tenth floors of New York City’s Asch building, and employs approximately 700 workers, 500 of them young women and girls (McGuire, 2011). A fire quickly broke out on the eighth floor shortly before the end of the work day.
“ “You’ve got to get right back in the saddle. You can’t live in fear of something as basic as a fire.” ” (15).
Rigid and unimaginative firemen were the correct words to describe Montag. He was a fireman who felt pride in his job, the fire department and his boss Captain Beatty, who he respected and did what he was asked. Unlike any other of the employees he felt a pleasure of burning
In life, everyone makes mistakes. Some are minor, some are major, but all in all, it happens. Eddie Rake made his fair amount of mistakes in life but managed to gain forgiveness back from every player and family because of the positive impact he made on the lives of the people of Messina. In John Grisham’s, Bleachers, Neely Crenshaw, one of Rake’s former players, said, “Coach Rake was not easy to love, and while you’re playing here you don’t really like him. But after you leave, after you venture away from this place, after you’ve been kicked around a few times, faced some adversity, some failure, been knocked down in life, you soon realize how important Coach Rake is and was” (Grisham 223). This tells one that no matter how bad Rake hurt a
(Taylor, 248). T.J. really wanted help because he pleaded, Stacey had a choice: either to help him or leave him. Stacey is a great friend to T.J. and helps him get home, but he could have easily left him in the dust for all the things T.J. has done to his family, like getting Mama fired. When Stacey helped his siblings get back on the Jefferson Davis school bus, get in trouble for the cheat notes, and take T.J. home when he was injured, he was showing courage. He stood up for his family and friends, he went through a lot to help them, even though he could get in trouble.
Papa thinks that TJ is a fool. This is made clear when the Averys are
“The old Inquisition had its rack and its thumbscrews and its instruments of torture with iron teeth. We know what these things are today: the iron teeth are our necessities, the thumbscrews, the high-powered and swift machinery close to which we must work, and the rack is here in the ‘fireproof’ structures that will destroy us the minute they catch on fire,” suffragist Rose Schneiderman vehemently declared in a memorial speech after the terrible tragedy that occurred more than a century ago. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in United States history. Taking place on March 25, 1911 in New York City, a fire broke out on the 8th floor of the factory, spreading quickly to the 9th and 10th floors,
The All-American quarterback; a past life for Neely Crenshaw who returns to his home-town in Messiena and finds himself dealing with the problems he thought he ran away from. In the book Bleachers, John Grisham tells the story of a former star high school football player from a small town where football was more sacred than a Sunday Mass. Being back where it all started, sitting on the bleachers, Neely awaits the death of his former coach. Throughout the story Neely is able to find himself by realizing that greatness has its costs; running away from your problems doesn't make them go away and by deciding to forgive Coach Rake.
Dropping everything he’s doing Joe quickly runs to the fire poll and proceeds to exits the building, sirens soaring over head, and fire truck engines starting up, he rushes to slip on his gear, he feels good about himself knowing he’s a hero, he holds his helmet under his right arm, and jumps on the bright shiny red fire truck, he taps the sparkling smooth metal twice, and they pull out of the fire station, as they arrive at the house, he spots the bright red and orange fire, instantly everything slows down, and his heart speeds up, other than the thrill and overall well-being of this career. Job duties, Salaries, Requirements, Hours, and other information about this career are also something to think about.
This statement definitely applies to Dallas Winston when he, Ponyboy and Johnny are in Windrixville and the church has caught fire. Dally grew up in New York City. He ran away from home at a young age and obtained a criminal record at the age of ten. By his teenage years, he had developed a way to survive. He does not care about anybody, except for himself and Johnny, a younger member of the gang. He has a soft spot for Johnny, probably because he sees a lot of himself through Johnny. Johnny’s parents are abusive, and sometimes they are so drunk that they do not even recognize him. Dallas is one of the only people who knows how Johnny feels, because before running away from home, he was also in this situation. However, Johnny is quiet and kind. When Dally was young, these were some of the qualities that he lacked. They are close friends because they each have qualities that are absent in the other’s personality. Johnny is the last thing that Dallas still loves and cares about. Without Johnny, Dallas would only have hate left inside of him. After Johnny kills a Soc in self defense, he and Ponyboy are sent by Dally to an abandoned church in Windrixville, in order to hide from the police. When Dallas comes to take them back home, they stop at Dairy Queen to eat lunch. Passing by the church in which Johnny and Ponyboy spent almost a week, they see that it has caught on fire, probably because they forgot to
When it was time to go, he took only a penknife, a ball of cord, some flint and steel, forty dollars, and an ax. The flint and steel were for starting fires. He hitched a ride from a trucker to the town; Delhi, nearest the old family farm. He set out in May, set up a camp in a terrible storm, couldn’t get his fire going was tired, and hungry and realized in order to survive he would have to keep his wits about him.
Breaking news! Recently there has been a fire in the small town of Windrixville, nearly killing four young children and two teenage boys. In this tragic incident, three young men rescued some young children from a burning church. Apparently, the children were playing in the church when it was set on fire. Our three heroes, Johnny Cade, Dallas Winston, and Ponyboy Curtis heard the voices of the kids from inside the church and they knew something had to be done. They were willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of these children’s lives.
People around the city went to bed, everything seemed relatively normal. Smoke dwindling into the dark night sky, the faint smell of burning wood. All normal for Chicago. Fires were a daily part of life for this wooden city. Near the time of 2 a.m. the fire didn’t seem so normal and average anymore. A mean flame was being born, it was blazing to life.
"You can buy your hair if it won't grow, you can fix your nose if he says so, you can buy all the make up that MAC can make, but if you can't look inside you, find out who am I to be in the position to make me feel so damn unpretty, I'll make you feel unpretty too" (TLC Unpretty).
When searching today’s society for those that show courage and nobility like that of Iphigenia, one acknowledges the work of the firefighters and police departments. Every time a person of this profession leaves their station in lieu of a call, they are potentially sacrificing their lives for the lives of others. The many possible things that could happen to one of these workers while on the field could put them in a situation where their safety is questionable. It is understood that this worker must sacrifice his or her life for whatever person that is in need of help.
