What comes to mind when you hear Rock ‘n’ Roll? It is the upbeat tempo with drums beating a harmonic tune, the electrifying sound of guitars and of course the singers, making music that connects to your emotions. When I hear Rock ‘n’ Roll I think of my dad. He loved any type of rock, but his favorites were Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. My dad died when I was 15 and the last time I saw him we were on our way to Arby’s to get lunch. He was listening to “Knocking on Heavens Door” by Guns N’ Roses and every time I hear that song it reminds me of him. Sometimes when I am in a mood and want to reminisce I will play that song and I always smile and think about the times we had. Music was always playing at his house and in his car. One day “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley came on and he turned up the radio. He told me that he could relate to the song because Elvis was a sexy rebel that did whatever he wanted. We both laughed and I could understand why he liked the song so much. He liked “Hound Dog” because Elvis was able to find a creative way to tell people to “shut the hell up.” I appreciate how far Rock music has come but I personally prefer newer styles and while I may not like all classic rock artists, Elvis will always …show more content…
be my favorite of that period. Elvis Presley is one of the greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll artists of all time, he is known as “The King of Rock and Roll” and for good reason. He not only created Rock but also a new dimension of music filled with attitude and personality. He had a distinct character and did things as he wanted instead of what was in the “norm”. He was defiantly considered a rebel. Elvis has made a huge impact on American culture and even after his death, he has made an influential difference on today’s music. Elvis always showed interest in music and was first introduced to it in the family’s church in Mississippi where he sang southern gospel. After moving to Nashville he was able to combine various elements of all the styles of music he had learned and make a completely new genre. Mixing country, gospel and R&B, he had this different sound that people had never heard. Add to that his- at the time-provocative dance moves and it seemed to cause a huge controversy. Many adults during his time were outraged by his style. They did not care for his music or the way he dressed and danced. They not only did not listen to it but they tried to not let their children listen to it either. Though, during this time there was a rebellious stage in most teenagers and it seems like every teenage girl was infatuated with Elvis. What’s not to enjoy? He was sexy and had charisma and an enormous stage presence that begged for attention. Eventually, in time he started to become more popular and people were able to accept him. Elvis went on to win numerous awards and to this day holds records in many different categories.
His impact on music is one of the greatest of all time; influencing artists like Buddy Holly and The Beatles, he paved the way for current Rock and Roll. Spotify has created an entire web page, called Elvisualization, tracing current music artists to Elvis Presley, it is found at: http://static.echonest.com/insights/elvis/elvisualization.html. I was able to find many different singers including Blake Shelton, who was inspired by Vince Gill, and he was inspired by Merle Haggard who was inspired by Elvis. Many different artists attribute different characteristics which can be traced back to Elvis. That is what a true king does, encourage long after he is
gone. It is not just Rock ‘n’ Roll that Elvis inspired. My all-time favorite singer, Mariah Carey, can be linked to Elvis as well.
...covered that his death was directly related to his incessant prescription drug use. Elvis Presley was buried on the Graceland property, near the grave sites of his beloved mother, Gladys, his father, Vernon, and grandmother Minnie Mae Hood Presley. Throughout his amazing career, Elvis, proved his musical dexterity. He popularized rock 'n' roll music in America. He won three Grammy Awards for his gospel recordings. He had a total of eighteen Number one hit singles, including "Don't Be Cruel," "Good Luck Charm" and "Suspicious Minds," as well as countless gold and platinum albums. He also happened to be one of the first performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Then, in 1998, Presley was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Three years later, he was graciously inducted into the Gospel Music Association's Gospel Music Hall of Fame too.
...sley performed his music in all types of genres. Presley allowed musicians to step out of the box and be their selves. He had hit songs in gospel, rock, pop, and country. Although he lived a short life, he is still famous in some people’s eyes. I met a woman who had attended one of Elvis’s performances and she said it was the best concert she had ever been to. During the concert she said Elvis was dancing and all the girls were going crazy as always. He removed his scarf and threw it into the crowd she was the lucky one who caught it. She still has his scarf in her house, and will never forget the memories of that night. Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977 in his home from heart failure. The King still lives on in many people’s lives and his music career helped many people. Elvis Presley led the way for many musicians, and has impacted the lives of many people.
Elvis did more to break down the racial barriers separating the whites and blacks in this country than most people will ever realize. That is one reason there was so much resistance to his music in the 50's and 60's and why it remains so popular today. This is not an overstatement. Presley brought music that had previously been played and enjoyed by minorities to the forefront. When people discovered they had music in common, they could talk about that subject and enjoy it together. Then conversations were started on other interests and a
Elvis Presley changed the music world as they knew it back in the 50’s he came out with a wild new style unlike any other. Even to this day if you hear Elvis’ name you automatically think of his signature style or as the king of rock and roll. Hound Dog was controversial for it’s time and made extra controversial by Elvis’ moves and how the ladies would swoon and storm the stage to see him. Presley was so ahead of his time that most adults didn’t because of his so-called vulgar ways but the younger generation went crazy for Elvis and his new style of blues meets country hence creating rock and becoming the king.
Rock ‘n’ roll sound is upon bluesy sound which is from blacks music style and it has stronger drum beats than drum sound of blues. Rock ‘n’ roll also uses guitar and piano, but it has more electric sounds.
More important from a music lover's perspective, however, are his remarkable artistic achievements. Presley was not the very first white man to sing rhythm & blues; Bill Haley predated him in that regard, and there may have been others as well. Elvis was certainly the first, however, to assertively fuse country and blues music into the style known as rockabilly. While rockabilly arrangements were the foundations of his first (and possibly best) recordings, Presley could not have become a mainstream superstar without a much more varied palette that also incorporated pop, gospel, and even some bits of bluegrass and operatic schmaltz here and there. His 1950s recordings established the basic language of rock & roll; his explosive and sexual stage presence set standards for the music's visual image; his vocals were incredibly powerful and versatile.
Elvis Presley was one of the biggest recording artists of that time period (PBS 1). He helped to start the big rock craze of the 50s. His first big break was a song known as Heartbreak Hotel (PBS 1). Elvis listened to African American gospel music and integrated that style into many of his best known songs . He sold millions of records and his popularity helped to make rock music popular . Elvis Presley made it possible for music from the different cultures to be brought over and intermixed . Elvis performed with a sexuality that appealed to young teens of the 50s. He signaled to mainstream culture that it was time to move on from the old and onto the new. He also became the perfect target for critics, parents and clergymen because of his explicit display of sexually suggestive undulations while on stage (PBS 1).
Before we explore The Birth of rock ‘n’ Roll, we must first reflect on other sounds that influence this genre of music. Sounds from blues, country, jazz, and gospel music all played a huge role in the birth of rock ‘n’ roll. The creation of different genres of music mixed together created a loud, fast, liberating sound that primarily a...
Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley on January 8, 1935 in two-room house built by his dad in Tupelo, Mississippi. Elvis was supposed to be a twin, but his brother Jessie was stillborn, leaving him as an only child. He grew up in Tupelo surrounded and supported by his extended family as well as his loving parents. Though money was tight, Vernon and Gladys managed to support their darling Elvis and regularly attended church. Elvis seemed to start taking influence not only from preaching and music form his church, but also the “black bluesmen in the neighborhood and country music radio programs enjoyed by his family.” (S1) On October 3, 1945 Elvis’s singing was first sawn as he won fifth prize in a youth talent contest at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show (S1). 1946 helps him along his way to pop sensation as his mother buys him a guitar, since she cannot afford the bicycle Elvis wants. His family is still only scrapping by, so on November 6, 1948 the El...
It wasn’t easy to get to where he was. Mississippi born and raised, Presley didn’t live in luxury. His wealth and fame was a massive step from his struggling Mississippi life (Stones). This influenced others to pursue their dreams as well. Since he was raised this way, and grew up as a generous and kind person, he would always donate to the needy, which sparked the role model in him (Bergmooser). Only ten years old, Presley finally made his first public performance. He sang “Old Shep” for a contest and received fifth place (Stones). Later in his life, he made his first record working with Sun Records in 1953 (Stones). This eventually led to exposure in the music industry. More and more people listened and bought his albums as the years flew by. Added up, Elvis Presley sold more than a billion records worldwide (RIAA). Throughout his career, he performed many times and at countless different locations. In 1972, he sold out four Madison Square Garden shows (McShane). This is the place many artists only dream of achieving. Step by step, Presley grew his fame and aspired others to strive the same way. Without har...
Elvis Presley was a well-known man and loved by many people. Based on http://www.brainpickings.org/2013/04/11/elvis-presley-teens-consumer-culture/Elvis Just like Muddy Waters, Presley timing was perfect as well. He came into and era (1950s) where the devastations of the great depression and world wars were over. People were now starting to have some freedom and enjoy the thing they loved which was listening to music and living life to the fullest. The social change that the 50s brought reflected music significantly, and Elvis Presley arose.. Kids were now starting to rebel against their parents and they had a lot of extra money to spend on records because of prosperity. During the Wars, money was limited and kids and adults had to work extra hard and save for survival purposes, but once the war-ended money could be used for pleasure reasons rather than just for survival. In addition, in the 50s our country had it’s own war, and I’m not talking about the World Wars, but yet human inequality. The civil rights movement was one of the biggest social changes in history and was a time where a lot of great artist prevailed and made songs on the issue. Elvis Presley showed just how social changes could influence or reflect the history of rock “n” roll. Presley started a culture, his hairstyle, the way he dressed all became part of the youth around the country. As I said our country was fighting its own war with segregation, Elvis music help bring people together. His music not on appealed white crowds, but black crowds listened to him as well. He brought people together through music, and proved to the world that he could be successful. He was one of the artist that mastered crossover, bringing every color to liking his music. Based on Larson fourth edition pg 38, it says that his record sales boomed, and then rock “n”
The Rolling Stones are one of the most well known hard rock bands. They have a distinctive history that separates them from other similar rock bands. Their unique sound formed the basis of rock and roll. The band had a huge influence on British music through things such as their fashion, fusion of obscure genres, and attitude. Over the course of the last fifty years, The Rolling Stones unique history, sound, and overall look still has an influence on modern British bands.
Music is far more than the sum of its parts. It can be thought of in a highly mathematical sense, which leaves one in awe of the seemingly endless combinations of rhythm, tone and intervals that a good musician can produce. Admiring music in this way is a lot like admiring an intricate snowflake, or shapes in the clouds; it's beautiful, but at the same time very scientific, based on patterns. All of the aforementioned qualities of music have one thing in common: they can be defined with numeric, specific values. However, the greatest aspect of music lies elsewhere, and cannot be specifically defined with words. It is the reaction that each individual has when they are confronted with their favorite (or least favorite) kind of music.

Rock and Roll has good rhythm to it and a backbeat which sounds different from other earlier genres of music. It also has the blues influence which I like. Earlier genres of music in my opinion didn’t have the same type of rhythm, speed, syncopation or the strong back beat, the riffs and the hooks that rock & roll has. I also like the vocal ranges that some of the rock & roll musicians have and their ability to make them sound so unique. From the early 60’s and on, the music in general just sounded a lot better. Rock and roll during these times also became more rhythmically better.
