Nikki Marrow Mrs. Levy English I (Honors) 23 March 2014 Elvis Presley The Man in Jumpsuit He rocked the world with his voice and soul. He was Elvis Presley. On August 16, 1977, the world sat in sorrow as one on the most renowned and loved singer had passed. He left a large impact, though. Presley’s music and almost everything about him is still found all around, today. “I never expected to be anybody important.” These were the words of the man who became the second best selling artist of all time. Through music, some dance, and pop culture, Elvis Presley proves his stand as the most influential person in American History. It wasn’t easy to get to where he was. Mississippi born and raised, Presley didn’t live in luxury. His wealth and fame was a massive step from his struggling Mississippi life (Stones). This influenced others to pursue their dreams as well. Since he was raised this way, and grew up as a generous and kind person, he would always donate to the needy, which sparked the role model in him (Bergmooser). Only ten years old, Presley finally made his first public performance. He sang “Old Shep” for a contest and received fifth place (Stones). Later in his life, he made his first record working with Sun Records in 1953 (Stones). This eventually led to exposure in the music industry. More and more people listened and bought his albums as the years flew by. Added up, Elvis Presley sold more than a billion records worldwide (RIAA). Throughout his career, he performed many times and at countless different locations. In 1972, he sold out four Madison Square Garden shows (McShane). This is the place many artists only dream of achieving. Step by step, Presley grew his fame and aspired others to strive the same way. This is what the current president at the time, Ronald Reagan, had mentioned about Presley (Bergmooser). Presley's fame and influence had skyrocketed tremendously that even the president had something to say about it. Not only regular fans but also many bands and people were influenced by his music, dance, and fashion. He has sold billions of records and has received many awards and achievements. His music is still heard everywhere, today. No one can compare to what he had accomplished. Remnants of Presley's extensive impingent can be found thought today's music and pop culture. All together, everything contributed to Elvis’ title as the most influential person in American History. (Bergmooser) As Buddy Holly once said, "None of us could have made it without Elvis."
