From “What happened to that one guy,” to, “The Godfather of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Robert Downey Junior has led one of the most awe inspiring turning points in his life in Hollywood and reinvented himself away from his history of substance abuse and has become the face of Marvel and a hero to many despite the trials and tribulations. RDJ, born on “April 4, 1965, in New York, New York” (Cunningham 2018), comes from a family of actors and directors, his parents were Robert Downey Sr. and Elsie Ford. Robert Downey Sr. was formerly Robert Elias, a Jewish-Irish New Yorker, who changed his name to his Step-father’s when he wanted to serve in the U.S. Army but was too young to enlist. He began filming indie movies in his basement and is well known for directing Putney Swope (1969). After he saved himself with a box of scraps he turned his life around and became Iron Man to redeem his past mistakes as a weapons monger. Robert Downey Jr is a less intense version of that, his terrorist kidnapper being his drug addiction and his turn around is also becoming a “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.”(Avengers 2012) with his portrayal of Marvel’s Iron Man. He’s grown to be one of Hollywood’s best A-list actors and has mentored almost all the incoming Marvel actors. His peers hold Downey in high regards, often commenting on how he’s helped them feel welcomed, and how Downey has been nothing but a kind soul to them.
