The colonists of Roanoke disappeared mysteriously around 1590. All the colonists were gone without a trace and without any exact way of letting anyone know what happened to them. When the governor of Roanoke, John White, arrived to Roanoke in 1590,there was only one clue about the disappearance that remained. The letters ''CRO''were written on a tree nearby. No one had knowledge of what happened to the colonists or where they might have gone. The question that is still being asked is,'' What happened in the time between when White left and returned?'' and , '' How did the events leading up to and after Roanoke affect the later colonies?'' There were eleven children, seventeen women, and ninety men that were supposed to be in Roanoke , but no remained. It is a mystery that hasn't been solved up to this day.
This all began when Sir Walter Raleigh, a wealthy courtier, sought-after permission from Queen Elizabeth I to establish a colony in North America. On March 25th 1584 he got a charter to start the colony. Raleigh funded and authorized the expedition .He sent two explorers by the names of Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to claim land for the queen,they departed on the west side of England on April 27th . On May 10 they arrived at the Canaries, a series of islands near the northwest coast of mainland Africa. They arrived at the West Indies on June 10 and stayed there for twelve days then left. On July 4 the explorers saw North American land, they sailed for nine days more looking for an entryway to the sea or river and found one on June 13th. ...emained in the Roanoke colony. The only traces that White and his men could find was a few small cannons, an open trunk, and a few fence posts. They believed those letters were a sign that the colonists had moved to Croatoan Island.
White had previously instructed the colonists that if there ever were to be a reason why they should leave the island, they should carve a Maltese cross above their destination. He found no sign of it and wanted to see if they were on Croatoan, which was south of Roanoke and home to Chief Mateo. He couldn't make any further explorations at the time due to the fact there there was a hurricane. He and his men were forced to go back to England. Although he attempted to come back several times, he was unable to raise money to fund for the trip back to America. He ended up losing hope and died many years later on one of Raleigh's properties
