Today's music scene is slowly growing, and differentiating in styles. One of the newest styles of music that has broken out is a generally unrecognized genre of music called "Geek Rock." By taking the meaningful lyrics of Emo, the heavy guitar riffs of Grunge, and the do-it-yourself attitude of Indie rock, this genre forms a new-wave approach to music. Many new artists have been categorized under this label, including Ben Kweller, Ozma, and Rooney. Rivers Cuomo, front man and lyricist of Weezer, is predominantly responsible for this underground rock movement. By transferring his life experiences into a musical statement, Rivers Cuomo has the ability to appeal to his fans on a new level.
Rivers Cuomo's childhood influenced his unique style of music. While raised in a sheltered community in the rural town of Yogaville, Connecticut, by his hippie parents, Rivers began to listen to music. He grew up with bands such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Later on he began to listen to the heavier sounds of Kiss, and Van Halen. He brought all of these bands' styles into his own music. By using a formula of music writing created by such greats as Brian Wilson, of The Beach Boys, and Kurt Cobain, of Nirvana, Rivers is able to cross a pop/rock song, with heavy riffs, and emotional lyrics.
Through creating such a distinctive approach to music, Rivers has developed a fan base that stands out from the mainstream crowd. For the most part, a Weezer fan has a distinct look, age, emotional status, and social status. The socially inept, clumsy nerds who sport black-rimmed glasses, and are between the ages of 17-28 are usually put under the category of being a Weezer fan. The main characteristic of th...

Through ten years of musical production, Rivers Cuomo has held on to most of his fans. Weezer has created four CDs, selling over five million albums throughout this decade. Because Weezer has certain elements within their musical styles unlike any other band, fans that they have collected over the years continue to listen the their music, and are always awaiting new, and innovative songs.
The future holds many possibilities for Rivers Cuomo. Weezer is currently working on a fifth album, a DVD containing music videos and live performances, and a special edition of Weezers' 1994 self titled album. The new album is said to contain songs that "are deeply personal, in fact, `deeper than he's ever gone,'" claims Billboard Magazine. Only Rivers knows what is in store for Weezer and their fans, but the fans have realized that Rivers knows what he is doing.
As a co-writer and producer, Brown has worked to develop many of the artists we have come to know today. Performers such as, Rick Barry, Status Green, Corey Wagar, Jerzy Jung, Natalie Stovall, Alex Brumel, and Andrew Holtz have all come to know his commitment to songwriting quite well, with some gaining major momentum because of it. His long career has seen him go thru several major label recording deals and at least three distinct publishing deals. He has achieved song placements in TV and film, and working with great producers and mentors like Danny Kortchmar (Don Henley, James Taylor, Rod Stewart), Peter Collins (Jewel, Rush, Indigo Girls), Monty Powell (Keith Urban, Lady A, Diamond Rio) and others that he’s no doubt picked up a few tricks from over the years.

The purpose of this paper is to examine philosophical and theological themes in the work of two modern musical groups. The alternative rock bands Jane’s Addiction and Bush will be the focus of this study. I have chosen these two artists since I have observed what I believe to be contrasting ideas in their work. Perry Farrell was the songwriter for Jane’s Addiction. His band’s release in 1988, titled Nothing’s Shocking contains views on God, man’s place in the world, and instruction on living a life that adheres to Zen philosophical views. Songs on the album include “Ocean Size," a memoir about how life should be lived; “Had A Dad," Perry Farrell’s beliefs about God; and “Ted, Just Admit It...", that will be discussed in more detail below. Bush’s lyrics, written by Gavin Rossdale on the album Sixteen Stone, argue directly with the ideas contained on Nothing’s Shocking. I believe that his song “Everything Zen” is a response to Perry Farrell’s beliefs.
Rock n’ roll gave people the voice they did not have in the early years. As the genre of music became more wide spread, people actually began to speak out. Altschuler touches on the exploration of how the rock n' roll culture roughly integrated with replaced and conflicted with preceding cultural values. Many of these values were very touch topics. Besides black civil rights, sexuality were one of the most sensitive t...
In the text book America’s Musical Landscape by Jean Ferris, the book takes us through the history of the evolution of American music. The book delves into the different time periods of America’s music beginning with early North American music all the way to today’s modern music. Additionally, the book also explains how music, theater and film intertwine to provide some spectacular art. Jean Ferris finishes the book by exploring America’s concert music. Let us now take a closer look into the different time periods brought out in the book.
In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Despite a lull and renewal Rock ‘n’ Roll continues to serve as an agent of influence and change in today’s youth culture and continues to burn in the heart of past generations of loyal fans.
His next album was a tribute too many of the influences in his life included several of his childhood
I chose to examine, review, and study a few of his songs. Kid cudi grew up in cleveland, Ohio. His father passed away when he was a young age which affected the kid ever since. He writes about living his life and having to go through many obstacles The first song I am going to start with and explain is his song soundtrack 2 my life, he discusses how he has a very hard time in his young life.
Right away Macklemore establishes his credibility and knowledge, ethos, by stating, "When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay, 'Cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight" (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). With such a forceful statement, he shows that he can relate to this issue, which gives him the credibility that people look for in such an important topic. By speaking of personal experience, this gives the audience a closer look into his life and may feel a connection that many people might need to relate and understand the lyrics or topic of the song. With the song beginning with an anecdote about Macklemore as a third grader fearing he was gay brings a great sense of the ethos appeal. This directly illustrates society’s corruption of an innocent child’s mind with the fear of being gay and believing that being gay would be a fault. This opening anecdot...
Although the style of ‘Rock music’ is easily adaptable to many different sounds, it is still thoroughly identified by its definingly amplified rhythm. The sudden worldwide popularity of rock and roll resulted in an unparalleled social impact. Rock ‘n’ Roll influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes, and language in a way few other social developments have equaled. The social impact is so large that rock stars are worshipped worldwide. In its early years, many adults condemned the style of music, placing a stigma on its name, and forbid their children from listening and following its ways.
I am interested in Deadmau5's music because it interests me how a musician can incorporate technology into their work. He has the ability to press a button and completely change a song. Each of his live sets can differ completely from the last, most of them improvised and ever changing. He was at the forefront of electronic music, changing the way that musicians treat their subject manner. Not only does he use the programs readily available for electronic musicians to use, he also helps create and improve the software. In this way, he is nothing but original.
wardrobe, band members wear is a little different from what is trending in the modern society. Ripped skinny jeans or shoes, hoodies in the dark shaded colors are common type of clothing members wear. Additionally, many seem to understand that band individuals have poor hygiene due to how many men have long hair and not a clean cut shave. As said before, many of the stereotypes are not fully wrong. According to Makewav.es, in the article Misconceptions About Rock Music, by Maddie Smith and Talia Alvarez, who both stated, “Will not try to defend the fact that some artists in the industry, like Danny Worsnop and Ronnie Radke, are recovering addicts.” The authors explain that some truth behind what is said about alcohol or drug consumers on band members is true. It has been indicated that not just the act of a small groups has produced a negative image on people who play
During their fifty years as a band, the Rolling Stones have released twenty-nine studio albums, eighteen live albums, numerous videos, concert films and compilations. The band was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. They were ranked fourth on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. As of 2014, their albums had sold an estimated 250 million. Well known for their amazing performances onstage and their wild reputations offstage, perhaps the Rolling Stones most impressive achievement was that they were still going strong as they hit their fifty year anniversary with no end in sight.
There are certain qualitative and quantitative factors that a band must fulfill in order to be considered in the running for such a title as the best rock band of the 2000s. For instance, the easiest way to target a bands success is to evaluate their awards and the accumulative amount of sales that they have received. Money is always a good measurement of worth because typically the more sales that a band has the more supporters the...
