Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, a great way to celebrate this time is to look back on various Hispanic-American figures that left their mark on History. One such figure that comes to mind is the one and only, Ricky Martin. Mr. Martin left his mark mainly on musical history. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month I will explore the life and times of Ricky Martin.
Like most great people, Ricky Martin had very humble beginnings. Enrique Martín-Morales (Ricky Martin) was born December twenty fourth, nineteen seventy one, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His mother, Nereida Morales, was an accountant, and his father, Enrique Martín, was a psychologist. Things changed for Ricky upon the divorce of his parents. Nereida and Enrique split when Ricky was just

two years old, leaving him to spend his childhood constantly changing locations. Ricky shifted between his father’s house and his paternal grandmother’s house. This divorce also resulted in Ricky having multiple new half-brothers and sisters. He has two half-brothers on his mother’s side, and two half-brothers, along with a half-sister, on his father’s side. Ricky also grew up as a Roman Catholic and was an altar boy during his childhood. Ricky Martin first showed musical interest at the age of six, when he would use wooden spoons as pretend microphones.
He also enjoyed various English-language rock groups, such as Led Zeppelin, Journey, and REO Speedwagon. Ricky was first inspired to sing and write songs by his maternal grandfather, who was a poet. Ricky had his first taste of fame at the very young age of nine years. He appeared in multiple Puerto Rican television commercials for various products, such as toothpaste, restaurants, and sodas. In just under a year and a half, Ricky had been featured in eleven commercials. It was Ricky’s musical inspiration and this small taste of fame that made Ricky want to pursue something even …show more content…
greater. After his commercial stint, Ricky decided to audition for membership in the small time Puerto Rican boy band called “Menudo”.
Ricky wowed the judges with his singing and dancing, but was rejected because he was too short. This happened twice before Ricky was finally accepted into the group. Upon his third audition, Ricky’s determination, along with his wonderful singing and dancing abilities, impressed the managers significantly. At the age of thirteen, Ricky was made an official member of Menudo. It was not for another month that Ricky made his debut as a Menudo member. In his first performance with the group in San Juan, Ricky got into a bit of trouble. It had been planned that the group would stay still during the show, but Ricky unintentionally defied the choreographer by walking around the stage. This mistake and the discipline that followed ensured that Ricky, and everyone else in the group, would adhere strictly to the instructions given. Ricky enjoyed all the years he spent travelling and performing with Menudo.
Ricky split from Menudo after four or so years of membership. He did this because he needed a break and to assess his career plan. Ricky returned to Puerto Rico to finish his High School education. After graduating, he then began taking classes at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. This lasted for a few months or so, before he dropped out and moved to Mexico City to find new performance opportunities. Ricky found a role on a Mexican telenovela called
“Alcanzar una Estrella”. He stuck around with the show for a second season and a movie adaption. Ricky’s acting career was fairly unsuccessful after that. After all these early experiments with groups and acting, Ricky Martin began his career as a solo-artist. His career took off and he never looked back. Besides being an incredible musician, Ricky also does a lot of humanitarian work. He is the founder of the Ricky Martin Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization. Their mission is to advocate for the well-being of children around the world. In conclusion, Ricky Martin is not only a wonderful musician, but also a warm hearted man.
...g the various reports concerning his father’s suicide, he is drinking, sweating and crying. The full impact of what his father had done to him finally hits him. “What the hell do you mean there were no others involved? I screamed. What were we, chorizo con huevos? No, the sneering voice in my poisoned mind explained, you were chorizo without huevos.” (78 ) Ricky cries out that he was left with his mother and sisters to raise him and he believes he was raised as a weak man. “…and because of your stupid, dramatic abandonment I’ve become a drunken, drug-abusing misfit.” (78 )
Chavez was a major leader in the Chicano movement that all started when he was nineteen years-old when he joined the NFLU (National Farm Labor Union). From then, he moved on to the CFO, where he moved up in rank quite easily which he eventually quit. After his nine year stint with the CFO, he then founded the union of t...
When Ricky finds out that his dad doesn’t want to go and steal the plane from the Cartel, it ticks him off and he decides to do it himself. So Ricky secretly runs away one day instead of going to school and goes to Mexico.
“Honoring our heritage. Building our culture.” What can you picture in your head while reading this? Do feel honored? Maybe special? Probably phenomenal? Well, this year's Hispanic Heritage month’s theme has brought to us a meaningful, and inspiring perspective on how Latinos are becoming more honored. Not only honored by their country, and other Spanish countries, but also being honored by the United States. Hispanics have impacted our nation through their solid responsibility to family, confidence, and diligent work. They have put in the effort and time to represent their Latino/a background. They have improved and formed our national character by looking back at what their ancestors would do. These hispanics deserve the right to be honored

It is crucial to have an awareness of the early beginnings of his life in order to understand Cesar Chavez’s development into becoming the celebrated leader he is known as today. One of the noteworthy aspects of his life is that he was not what some would consider a “natural-born” leader, meaning that he was not born into a family of great wealth or power. Chavez was born on March 31, 1927 near the town of Yuma, Arizona to a humble, hardworking Mexican immigrant family. His grandfather, Cesario Chavez, for whom he was named after, had worked hard to save enough money to be able to buy land in Arizona and raise his thirteen children, which included Cesar’s father. His father, Librado Chavez, grew up, got married, and opened up a couple of small businesses to help provide for his family and build a better life for his own children. According to biographical accounts about Cesar, this is when and where he began to learn and...
Cesar Chavez was born in 1927 to a farmer in Meza, Arizona. When Cesar was 10 years old, his father lost his farm and the family was forced to become migrant farm workers in California. During this time he would encounter the conditions that dedicated his life to changing: wr...
The depression forced his kin off their own farm in 1937. As Cesar Chavez traveled and worked in the fields he saw, “.wretched migrant camps, corrupt labor contractors, meager wages for back-breaking work, bitter racism” (history.com). Chavez went to school until he graduated in his eighth grade year. He was forced to leave school to help assist his family.
Jackie Robinson did more in his short baseball career than anyone else ever did for the sport. He was always able to push on despite the criticisms and punishment he took from others. No other man can say that they broke the color barrier or that they changed the sport of baseball forever. To do what he did required strength and the ability to endure physical and mental pain. Jackie Robinson was the first African-American Major League Baseball player. He knew that if he failed to integrate baseball he could delay civil rights. By doing what he did, Jackie Robinson contributed greatly to the civil rights movement. His life experiences and hardships allowed him to leave a mark on civil rights that extended farther than just baseball.
... all as a society can benefit from today. Such as, studying his literature, reading his autobiography, and looking up to him as a role model. Rodriguez is an educated man with a very good grasp on what life and the American society expect from all of us. Speak our language if you're going to live in our country. If one chooses not to make any sacrifice needed to accomplish the basic skills needed to learn English then your chances of belonging and succeeding will not happen easy. While our heritage and culture may remain forever tied to and expressed in our native or "home" language, only through the dominant language of our country (English in most cases) can we achieve a place in society that gives us a feeling that we belong amongst everyone else. The only way we can truly become a part of our community and fit in is to dominate the current spoken language.
There are many reasons why Chavez became part of the movement, but the major reason was his childhood. It is noted that Cesar Chavez was one of five children born to Librado Chavez and Juana Estrada who were farmers. As a child in Arizona, he grew up nourished by the values of his family and his rural Mexican-American community. His mother taught him the importance of non-violence and self-sacrifice and his grandmother impressed upon his the values of the Catholic faith. And as a child, he experienced racial discrimination in school. (Griswold del Castillo) Chavez quit school after the eighth grade to work full-time in the fields. His grandfather had homesteaded some 112 acres that the family soon lost because of t...
Many people from the 1900’s contributed to the evolution of the history of rock and roll. However, Jimi Hendrix was the rock legend who changed the way music was made and he raised the bar for the rest of the music industry. Jimi was born in 1942, in Seattle, Washington, he had a difficult childhood, being raised by a young mom who had Jimi at seventeen and a dad who eventually left and started another family, he was often left living with relatives. He only saw his mom a few times before she eventually died in 1958. In many ways, music has become a sanctuary for Jimi since he grew up not having much.
Chicanos study 50 made me want to discover more into what music helped motivate people in their everyday life or just brought their spirits up. Chicano Rock will always be a part of history and will continue to evolve even though some people will not have political views in their songs anymore. Mana is part of modern day rock in Spanish, but his songs are more about love. Music will continue to follow what society is asking for and since modern society is not as heavily opened to discrimination anymore rock and other genre will not focus in that. Just like Chicano movements’ leaders, Chicano Rock was there to push individuals to keep fighting for peace and acquire their rights. Chicano Rock was like Caesar Chavez and Rodolfo Gonzales; it brought hope to people when hearing their favorite artist speaking about incorrect politics and how it should be put to an end. Los Lobos, Zapatistas, and Los Curdos were small popular bands in the Chicano Rock that inspired Chicanos during the movements. Chicano Rock will probably will not be as big as other Latin genre and other modern genres, but like me and other people, there will always be followers who will continue to hear Chicano Rock and will be forever a part of history that will never be
“There is an intellectual distinction between a gangster in a business environment and a businessman in a gangster environment,” says Ross (Ross 74). 'Freeway’ Rick Ross grew up illiterate, living on the streets with rough gangs, and in impoverished neighborhoods where violence and drugs were on the rise. Rick goes into the drug business. Danilo Brandon became Rick’s main drug supplier and his downfall. Blandon had been more than Rick’s connection: He belonged to a ring of exiled Nicaraguans with ties to the Contras, the CIA-backed guerrilla army fighting a civil war in the name of anticommunism (Katz). Unbeknownst to him, he possibly ended up a pawn in a United States government conspiracy to trade drugs for guns during the Iran-Contra affair (Moore). Regardless, Freeway Rick Ross went from being one of the largest crack cocaine dealers in the eighties to prison in the nineties to fund raiser and legal entrepreneur today.
