On a daily basis, we as humans try to make other people see things from our point of view and we do so using persuasion. We unconsciously do this every time we speak because most of our actions are persuasive in nature. There is not any way to communicate without using rhetoric or “being rhetorical.” I find rhetoric to be a very frustrating word because the word has so many different meanings. Very powerful, as we use media (internet, radio, TV, etc.) to share communicate and disseminate information to others. In today’s society, social media plays an enormous role in the information we receive, share and spread to encourage beliefs or emotions. Social media focuses on reach and engagement but that will not matter if the message contained within a user’s content does not resonate with the audience. The audience pulls the strings, but if they disagree, you can quickly lose control and have your belief/concepts turned against you. In fact is our saturation in media and its images is one of the reasons why learning to do rhetorical analysis is so important. The more we know about how to analyze situations and draw informed conclusions, the better we can become about making well informed judgments about the people, situations and media we encounter (Carrol back-pack). Rhetoric—the way we use language and images to persuade—is what makes media work (Carrol). When you post to your blog or tweet, you are using rhetoric. On Twitter to catch the audience attention you have to be creative with your use of words, tone to appeal to others due to character limits. Often on my YouTube channel, I use rhetoric as a way of click bait to get people to click on my videos by using misleading or short titles to help build my ethos. Companies use rhetoric to get you to buy their products. Take, for example, a commercial for men’s deodorant that tells you that you will be irresistible to women if you use their product. This campaign does not just ask you to buy the product, though. It also asks you to trust the company’s credibility, or ethos, and to believe the messages they send about how men and women interact, about sexuality, and about what constitutes a healthy body. In the story, What is Rhetoric by William Covino and David Jolliffe, there are a wide variety of topics discussed that are inextricably interwoven with the concept “rhetoric.” Rhetoric, as defined by the authors, is “the study and practice of shaping content.” Consequently, my first thought was: Ok, this is a rather broad and opaque description; my successive thought, however, was one of astonishment, inasmuch as the authors went on to further elucidated this jargon. In doing so, the authors distilled the most crucial elements of what is rhetoric— the prevalence of discourse community, and how appealing language is often a precursor to persuasion.

In recent years, it is not even necessary to turn on the news to hear about the bad reputation farming has been getting in recent years. What with the media focusing on things like drugs in animals and Pink Slime, or Lean Finely Textured Beef, it is a wonder that people are eating “non-organic” foods. However, many pro-farming organizations having been trying to fight back against these slanders. Still, the battle is not without heavy competition, and a good portion of it comes from Chipotle, a fast food Mexican restaurant that claims to only use completely organic ingredients in their food. Chipotle is constantly introducing advertisements claiming to have the natural ingredients while slandering the name of farmers everywhere. Perhaps the most well-known is “The Scarecrow,” a three minute ad that features some of the most haunting images Chipotle has ever featured. While “The Scarecrow” uses tear-inducing images and the almost eerie music to entice the audience to the company’s “free-range farming” ideals, it lacks substantial logos yet, it still
Imagine a society where education isn’t entirely dependent upon the merits of one’s personal knowledge. Where the learning environment is utilized for personal development and growth rather than competition and separation. A sanctuary composed of unity and equity among peers. A place where college isn’t the only goal, but rather personal identity and initiative are established along the way. Such a society, fully embodies Baldwin’s ideology regarding education, and the prejudices therein. In his speech, “A Talk to Teachers” Baldwin delivers a compelling argument, in which he criticizes the problems and prejudices within the educational system in his day. However, through his sagacious philosophies and eye-opening opinions, Baldwin manifests the cruel, unspoken truth within his speech, that the hindrances and prejudices experienced in his day are still existent in 2016.
The American diet is becoming extremely harmful to the health of especially children. The new generation has different trends in regard to health compared to those of perhaps their parents. In the documentary Fed Up, Soechtig uses data and statistics, as well as narratives of emotional events to highlight the long run issues with American’s poor diet and also to criticize the food industry. By doing this, the director hopes to spark a change in diet.
Introduction Teachers have become gateway keepers to providing education to students. Over the span of several years, teachers have been criticized for being unprepared, unable to adapt to different learning styles, and are increasing the number of students who aren’t learning. With this achievement gap increasing, it brings up the idea of what the education system is doing wrong and what improvements it needs to make. The education system needs to be redesigned to strengthen its curriculum, it’s connection to both practice and theory, and the idea of a powerful educator. Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. That is, until the fact set in that I was going to have to pay for this education that I desired. I knew that with my busy schedule, I would be unable to make enough money while only working a few hours here and there. I was beginning to lose sight of hope. The question of what is rhetoric and what does it do has been a question since stories were even being recorded. However, now there are multiply different scholars who believe that they understand what rhetoric is and how to use it. For someone to use rhetoric correctly they must first have a definition of rhetoric that either they have made to fit themselves or they find a previous definition that suits them. In order for me to become an improved rhetor and be able to rhetorical discuss and evaluate pieces of literature or speeches like General Douglas MacArthur’s Farewell address, I must first define rhetoric in how I understand it. Rhetoric is the art of persuasive speaking aimed to sway your audience in a direction that has been chosen by the rhetor. The way in which a citizen uses rhetoric can change over time. The need to argue the same problem is invalid so the need to use the same rhetorical situations is invalid. You can use rhetoric in a multitude of different areas within our life however; we must choose to use it for good or for evil. In order for rhetoric to still be used in speech today one of two things must be true. There must either be a Truth in life and rhetoric or the more likely choice, that rhetoric changes throughout time and situations. You are not trying to change someone’s mind about something however; you are trying to convince them that you are also correct. I will be using multiple pieces of works that are defining rhetoric to support my definition and finish by evaluating General Douglas MacArthur’s Farewell Address using my definition of rhetoric.
Rhetoric is innate in nature because there is always some form of persuasion in communication. Rhetoric is essentially persuasion over value, which can be communicated through any type of discourse written, verbal, or nonverbal. If something is significant enough to be argued or even stated, it must have some degree of importance. Because rhetoric is everything, understanding how it influences us, helps us better understand how we work.
The idea of rhetoric is exceptionally important in the world of writing, and just like memories, rhetoric is what a paper is forged out of. It helps the building of connections. The connection made to rhetoric in my writing is nearly oblivious, everything I write has been affected by rhetoric in some way. So whether this is in the form of a television commercial or a billboard, pathos, logos, and ethos can be found in all advertisements. Paragraph 7: Conclusion Rhetoric is easily seen when comparing and contrasting these two forms of advertisement, as has been proven. Between the Doritos commercial and the smoking billboard, examples of pathos, logos, and ethos were not hard to find. Both advertisements, though, were different in their ways of expressing rhetoric.
Companies have rhetoric in their advertisements. The goal is to persuade a watcher or listener into believing that their brand of a certain product is the best. This in turn will make people want to buy the product. When it comes to advertising for a product, the majority of people see it as a concept that is both simple and harmless. As Chidester points out, through the eyes of popular culture as religion, the product associated with the advertisement is considered to be a fetishized object.
Many people do not understand how rhetorical techniques work. All they know is that if you are able to force your ideas into someone else’s mind then you have successfully accomplished your goal. But there is more to it than just forcing your idea into someone's mind, for example there is many rhetorical techniques that can be use to be more efficient at persuading people to share the same beliefs you believe on. One example would be in “The Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, Plato uses two successful rhetorical techniques one of them being the allegory and the second technique plato uses is the dialogue, both of them being successful techniques in this allegory to persuade the readers about his points of view.

Zusak, on the other hand , showas that having courage during war can be a advantage and also an disadvantage depending on the situation.
