Beyond many people’s knowledge, the news is not always exclusively disclosing objective facts on events. Rather, the news platform utilize rhetoric to influence its audience’s interpretation on an event. More astonishingly, many people don’t recognize misinformation and thus allow the news platform to subtly force an opinion on their audience. An impressionable audience is the product of our media dependent culture; ultimately, media has the power to distribute biased information and strongly influence the public. However, the audience should bear the responsibility of rejecting the misinformation they are exposed to and to always question the credibility. (Weir, Keziah) The sources covering Obamacare use either an objective diction aimed to inform the audience, or a diction meant to influence the reader’s interpretation; the audience bears the responsibility of identifying whether or not the article’s diction shows a bias and to recognize the concrete coverage of the text.
Milbank explains the issues and The United Nation’s investigation of the Obamacare repeal, using ¨loaded¨ words, otherwise known as persuasive diction, in order to appeal to their liberal audience. The office of UN human rights wrote a paper urging Trump to not repeal Obamacare; ultimately, denying affordable health care becomes a violation of basic human rights. You can conclude this by looking at the demographics of Washington Post’s audience which show majority of the readers are consistently/mostly liberal. (Weir, Keziah) The author’s intended audience is liberal women, mothers, and girls. We know this because the website Elle prove to be very feminine as it focuses on women’s fashion, women’s advice, and news that encircle empowering women. Based on the article, the author aims to inform the audience on benefits that women will lose; issues such as these are generally a concern for women. Additionally, a conservative woman would typically not be concerned with how the repeal could be detrimental. We know that the author wants to inform young girls and mothers on the repeal as well, because she gives a list of examples pertaining to young girls and mothers. Trump is infamous for dehumanizing women and openly expressing his sexist ideals. Because the news platform is for women, the author uses language that opposes Trump; ultimately, many liberal women oppose Trump. To appeal to these women, the author’s diction reveals disapproval for Trump’s role as a politician. The article’s credibility on the topic lies in that it’s category: a women’s platform. Therefore, they would have an expertise when it comes to women’s health care. Also, when listing the costs of repealing Obamacare, they cite the information they use which therefore increases credibility.
