When an individual or a group speaks in favor of or recommends an action for a specific cause this is considered advocacy. An example of this would be when Ashton Kutcher, well known actor, spoke to congress to endorse new software on behalf of his company, Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children. Ashton Kutcher is the co-founder of the company Thorn; which focuses specifically on targeting the online portion of human trafficking as it is where the buying and selling of children mostly takes place. Thorn has produced software called Spotlight, which allows law enforcement to shift through data collected daily and prioritize cases that deal in the selling or buying of children. For Ashton Kutchers speech he used the ethical view point of normative ethics, he believes it is our moral duty to help save these children. Kutcher uses the phrase that we have “the right to pursue happiness” and then he states that these children’s “right to pursue happiness is stripped from them, taken by force, raped, abused”; a very powerful statement that also puts in prospective what the children are put through. When talking about rhetoric, Aristotle says there are three elements: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is the appeal to ethics and credibility, Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and Logos is the appeal to logic; in Kutcher’s speech he encompasses all three. Kutcher is able to establish his credibility to advocate for the abolishment of human trafficking by being a co-founder and chairmen of the organization Thorn, creating software to bring it down. Kutcher and his team also have worked with the FBI and The Department of Homeland Security to try and infiltrate the human trafficking organization. As Kutcher goes on with his speech he establishes

There is a point in the speech where he conveys the emotions he feels when he witnesses a video of little girl, the same age as his two year old son, being raped by an American man who then spreads the video all over the internet. There are many times where Kutcher gets teary eyed and choked up when explaining what some children have to go through in human trafficking, which gives the audience a sense of how passionate Kutcher is about saving these children. Lastly Kutcher expresses the element of logos through reasoning on why the trafficking of children needs to be stopped along with how Thorn’s software can help. Kutcher goes on to explain how Spotlight, software created by Thorn, can be very beneficial in helping law enforcement narrow down those involved in the human and sex trafficking of children. Kutcher also explains that this software will only get better over time the more it is used, it has proven to be very effective in quickening the investigation time by up to 60%. Pageants can be very overwhelming and sometimes affects the participants in the long run. His exigency is the unknowing exploitation of little girls who are decorated with makeup, fancy clothes, and extensions added to their hair and the death of JonBenet Ramsey was taken serious but is believed to be a consequence of being in a pageant. “We love the beautiful dresses and the big hairstyles. According to the Webster Dictionary, rhetoric is defined as the art of speaking or writing effectively. Rhetoric is made up of three separate appeals that can be used individually or collectively in an attempt to persuade a reader. Ethos is the credibility and qualifications of the speaker or author. Pathos is the author's use of emotions and sympathy to urge the audience to agree with his or her standpoint. And lastly, logos is applying sound reasoning (logic) to attract the typical ideas of the audience and to prove the author's point of view. "Lockdown" by Evans D. Hopkins is a fine example of an author using these appeals to persuade his audience. Hopkins uses of the three appeals are easy to locate and relate with throughout the entire passage. He undoubtedly uses rhetoric to try and keep his audiences focus and to persuade them to feel the way he does about the treatment of prisoners. We can identify and trust that he is making reasonable assertions because he was a prisoner and went through actual lockdowns. The fact that Hopkins was an actual prisoner proves his credibility to provide evidence for his thoughts.

He establishes the ethos of a normal man who possesses extensive knowledge on a crisis that focuses on morality. He wishes to provide the public with accurate information in order to drive them to take action. Instead of addressing a group of congressmen, Gore speaks directly to the people. The most common method, to establish ethos, within the presentation was through visual elements. Nearly every claim Gore makes about his life is supported by visual evidence such as pictures and videos and graphs (4a). However, ethos is only one point in the triangle of persuasion. Logical reasoning is also a necessary element. Gore uses expert testimonies to provide the audience with factual information from a valid source; for example, when Tony Blair, a scientific advisor, speaks about the temperature changes in Greenland. Gore also appeals to logos through inductive and deductive reasoning. Using these two strategies assures that the audience can follow the information and is unlikely to become overwhelmed. Smoothly switching between general and specific information greatly increases fluidity within a presentation. Lastly, Gore applies the rhetorical device of pathos in order to connect with the emotions of the audience. He needs to pull on their heart strings, draw a few laughs, yet remain near to the subject. In their advertisements, the St. Jude Children’s Hopsital Research Foundation packs their thirty second commercials with as many rhetorical appeals as possible. The purpose of these celebrity-endorsed commercials is to encourage viewers to donate to the foundation, and the producers have creatively inserted various rhetorical appeals in hopes to sway viewers to open their wallets. By using an immense amount of rhetorical appeal; including ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos, the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Research Foundation has successfully created an informative and heartfelt commercial that has inspired many to donate to medical research for children.

Effectively communicating an idea or opinion requires several language techniques. In his study of rhetoric, Aristotle found that persuasion was established through three fundamental tools. One is logos, which is used to support an argument through hard data and statistics. Another is ethos, which is the credibility of an author or speaker that allows an audience to conclude from background information and language selection a sense of knowledge and expertise of the person presenting the argument. The impact of pathos, however, is the most effective tool in persuasion due to the link between emotions and decisions. Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle links three elements of arguing together: the speaker, the story, and the audience. The relationship between the elements determines the speaker’s argument and whether it will be successful in oratory or literature. Ethos, Logos and Pathos are each different aspects of the argument that must be balanced in order to succeed in persuading or convincing an audience. Ethos, or character, relates to the speaker’s credibility that the audience appeals to: it is useful when persuading a group of people to trust what you are saying or doing. Logos, or logic, is a way of convincing and appealing by reason, truth, and facts. Pathos relates to the audience’s emotions and their response to what the speaker is saying.

Logos persuades by reason, pathos by appealing to emotion and ethos by the credibility of the author. The characters in The Iliad employ the use of these techniques to sway another character into doing or feeling something else.
