2016 was one of the most divisive elections. Party lines were set in stone, and factions within parties began to break apart. It was marked with arguments between the parties, and within them. For the democrats Bernie Sanders and HIllary Clinton competed for the democratic nominee for president in a race that split the democratic party. Clinton managed to gain the nomination with controversy following the nomination. In an attempt to draw the party together again at the DNC convention in 2016, Michelle Obama along with Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders took the stage to give speeches celebrating Hillary Clinton and denouncing Donald Trump. Michelle Obama was at an all time high approval ratings especially within minority communities with which HIllary was struggling with at the time. Obama gave one of the most memorable speeches of the night giving us the now famous quote “When they go low, we go high,”. Her speech was memorable because of her effective use of rhetorical devices. Her lowest approval rating according to Washington Post has been 61%. In recent years Obama’s popularity has soared. She has become a popular figure, due to her active role as a first lady. Her approval rating in recent years has surpassed her husband, and there was even a call by a large portion of the general public for her to run for president. She declined the offer instead offering her support to Hillary Clinton. Her and her husband President Obama supported Clinton for the whole campaign and often would go on the campaign trail to speak for her. At the time of the DNC convention there was a divide between democrats; many wanted Bernie Sanders to be the nominee and believed Clinton had the elite members of the democratic party get her the nomination.
