“Beginning today, the United States of America gets back control of its borders, gets back its borders (Sweet).” This famous quote said by Donald Trump marked a change in the future safety of America. Trump held a speech on 1/25/2017 at the Department of Homeland Security to announce his future plans of building a wall along the United States and Mexico border. Throughout history, The United States was notable as “a nation of immigrants. It was settled by immigrants and has been enriched and strengthened by those from other countries. Throughout US history, however, the general sentiment toward newcomers has been negative. Trump uses this technique to evoke emotions when talking about the loss of loved ones from families by illegal immigrants. In his speech, Trump states “We are joined here this afternoon by parents whose children were horribly killed by individuals living here illegally. I will now read these parents' names and ask them to stand (Sweet).” By listing out the names of the ones who died and presenting them to the audience, Trump is trying to garner sympathy and understanding for the current immigration crisis. The president believes that it was important for the families to feel as though they're children's lives will be remembered. “The term “body language” refers to the nonverbal cues that you communicate to others during interpersonal interactions and may include things such as posture, gestures, and eye contact. According to some experts, body language typically accounts for approximately 50 to 70 percent of all communication (“Preparation”).” Although Trump uses numerous types of body language, the ones that stood out the most were his use of hand gestures and pauses in his speech. The hand gestures help show authority and that he is strongly passionate about his future plan to build the wall and the idea of making America more safe and to have a better economy. Throughout the entire speech, Trump never lays his hands down by his side and constantly uses them to emphasize the importance of his speech. His use of hand gestures demands attention and expressess "I am in command." The pauses in the speech create a moment for the audience to fully digest what Trump is talking about, and allow applause for Trump until he continues in his speech.
