Kate Beagle Mr. Ioannidis English 10B 21 May 2024 Eloquent Anthony A common saying goes “Nice guys finish last”. Brutus was seen as respected, caring, and honorable, but after Anthony gives a short speech everyone wants to kill Brutus for being evil and unjust. How did Anthony change the minds of every single person right after Brutus convinced them all that he killed Caesar for the good of Rome and its people? It seems like Shakespeare was being unrealistic with how fast the people changed their minds, but after dissecting Anthony’s speech it is clear that Anthony made the people truly believe that Brutus was in the wrong with the use of many persuasive devices. Finally, Anthony discredits Brutus by showing the people how Brutus isn’t as honorable as they think he is, where Brutus’s whole argument is based on his honor and trustworthiness. The first strategy Anthony uses that may have been the most effective was his decision to use emotions to sway the crowd. Anthony knows that the people of Rome are not independent thinkers, so he uses emotions to persuade them without them having to think. When Anthony says “My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it comes back to me” in Act III, Scene ii, Lines 108-109, he is using his emotions to gain sympathy from the crowd and show them that Caesar deserves to be mourned because he was such a great person. The reason that emotions are so powerful in Anthony’s speech is because emotions spark the attention of people and focus them on what the speaker is saying and inspire people to take action or change (Turner et al., 2001). al.).
