“A Question of Honor”, Rhetorical Analysis Academic dishonesty is one of the largest issues in American Universities. “A Question of Honor” by William Chace, a faculty of many prestigious American universities, published in Ethics in Higher Education, is an informative article about academic dishonesty. Chace believes that academic dishonesty is one of many factors that are creating financial, credible, and loyalty issues among American Universities. Chace appeals to the readers logos with reputable sources, citing facts; pathos by acknowledging that he agrees with his audience, college students; and a point of view building his emotional appeal. William Chace creates a trusted relationship with the reader through appealing to the reader’s
logos. One of the first items Chace writes about is that cheating has been going on for many years. Chace writes, “Eighty years ago, Dean Clarence W. Mendel of Yale University declared that the problem of cheating at his school was widespread enough to require instant reform…” (Chace 202). Chace starts his essay by making his readers realize that he understands that cheating did not start with them. Cheating has always been a part of college even eighty years ago. Academic dishonesty is not a new idea, however, since technology has advanced so much cheating has become easier. Chace writes, “Still even though the web makes cheating much easier than ever before, and thus more prevalent, the phenomenon of cheating is nothing new. Students have been at it for a long time” (Chace pg. 202). College students have become very clever when it comes to cheating. Students cheat for many different reasons, some do it because they procrastinated to the very last moment and are too lazy to do their work, moreover, some cheat for the thrill. They want to see how far they can go before getting caught. Not only does Chace do a good job appealing to the reader’s logos, but as well as the reader’s pathos. Chace appeals to the reader’s pathos by forming an emotional relationship with the reader. Chace writes what every student that has cheat believes. Chace writes, “Although no school welcomes negative publicity about academic dishonesty, administrators can always point the finger downward at those who break the rules. And professors can always distance themselves in the same way. So it is the students who stand at the center of this drama” (Chace pg. 212). Everyday teachers copy someone else’s work and teach it to the students. Students realize this and wonder why they get in trouble for cheating, however students get in trouble for doing the same thing. Chace, as a faculty of multiple colleges, creates a connection to his readers to further appeal to the reader’s pathos. Chace writes in his point of view to show his knowledge of academic dishonesty in American universities. Chace writes, “One answer, I believe, rests in what they can do, and must do, about a large and ugly presence on almost every campus: academic Dishonesty” (Chace pg. 201). Chace knows that academic dishonesty does not only happen on one campus but every campus in the United States. Earlier in the article, Chace reveals that American Universities are going in the wrong direction. The public is trusting the universities less and the loyalty of the faculty is declining. Chace uses his point of view as a way of showing that he understands what are happening to American Universities. Chace effectively presents that academic dishonesty is one of the main problems hurting American universities. William Chace believes that if we stop academic dishonesty, society will start trusting the universities more and the faculty will have more loyalty to the universities. William Chace proved his idea to his readers through logic, emotion, and his point of view.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
The YouTube video “U.S. Armed Forces – We Must Fight – President Reagan” by Matthew Worth was made with the intention to motivate the viewers to support the U.S. Armed Forces. The purpose of this Rhetorical Analysis is to determine whether or not the video has been successful in doing just that, motivating and drawing support for the United States Armed Forces. The video was uploaded to YouTube on February 19, 2012 and has nearly 4 million views. Matthew uses the famous speech “A Time for Choosing” by the United States former President, Ronald Wilson Reagan, who has a reputation for his patriotism, to complement the video. This video has been effective in motivating the viewers because of its strong use of the rhetorical concepts logos, ethos, and pathos.

Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). However, this may stem from a lack of enforcement of the rules. Even at the most prestigious schools, such as Harvard University, students are not upholding the rules implemented: “The possibility that 125 Harvard students ‘improperly collaborated’ on an exam in the spring has galvanized … discussion about … honor codes” (Source: C). In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
In “Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes” Susan Greenberg is trying to inform the audience as to why society does not require the honor code anymore. The rules that lie behind this regulation are becoming outdated and more students are finding themselves punished for disobeying it. A lot of honor code schools are trying to get rid of this process because it only brings the students more pressure. Typically, students that are in honor code schools tend to cheat more than schools that do not possess it. If a student is enrolled in a more prestigious school, he/she is more tempted to cheat in order to maintain his or her good grades. Looking back at my rhetorical analysis in writing 150, to sum it up, it was horrendous. It became exceedingly obvious that I had skipped the prewriting step. Forgoing this step caused choppy sentences, multiple grammatical errors, and horrendous flow. The rough draft ended up looking like a collection of jumbled up words. The first attempted felt so bad, I started over entirely. After the review in class, I used the examples to focus my ideas and build off what other people had done. For example, the review helped me to clarify my knowledge and use of Kairos. Once done, it was peer reviewed by my group again. All the other group members commented that I had good ideas, but bad flow and grammatical errors. After revising their respective points and
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.

Academic integrity has been a major concern among many colleges and universities across the world. Many people may ask the question: what is academic integrity? University of Missouri’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (n.d.) states, “Academic integrity is the core set of values and principles that underwrites the very mission of the University itself; integrity, honesty, hard work, and the determination to translate personal and professional principles into behavior.” Some also may view academic integrity as the act of sustaining honest and rightful behavior in an academic setting that avoids, prevent and provide disciplinary actions for those who commits academic dishonesty, plagiarism and cheating of any kind. Majority of college and universities in all disciplines has academic ethics and honesty policies for all students regardless of their academic statues as undergraduate or graduate students.
