In the novel "Out of the Dust" novel by Karen Hesse, Billy Jo uses music as a form of release and escape when life is stressful for her. An evident example is when her parents announced to her that wheat is incapable of being planted during the course of time; she resorted to no other but her beloved piano. It has been shown that the piano symbolized as not only a skill, but also an endowment acquired from her beloved mother. According to her, she believes this talent is for her to continue the legacy of her mother, despite her absence. Throughout the performance done by 2 local bands, the residents of Joyce City displayed joy, enthusiasm and city pride. The citizens, including Billy Jo lived in the moment and cherished it for what it was.
In brief, the city's dilemma was in disregard for the moment of the performance. Most importantly, seizing the moment and embracing reality is the only thing that is controllable, rather than letting the tragedy itself control one. Despite, Billy Jo's burnt finger during the fire that took place, nevertheless she attempted her best to neglect negative emotions and suppress the past hardship. To conclude, she eliminated her agony by directing her energy into a passion furthermore, she played the piano with no grief in mind, she knew Ma would request that. It has been visible that the Billy Jo that was presented at the start relied on music to detach herself from her surroundings meanwhile, the Billy Jo near the end is the complete opposite she turned her skill into a passion and bond between her and Ma.
Music served as an escape for Josh, because, as Hunt vividly describes, being a 15 year old, in the Great Depression was not an easy task. Josh, and his best friend Howie would produce beautiful music, temporarily losing themselves in the exquisite music they created. Josh and Howie were talented past their age, and they were given a role to play for the school assembly. Though their rehearsals were beneficial, they both dreaded the thought of returning home. Sadly, Stefan, Josh’s father did not feel the love he once felt toward music anymore, so he believed Josh should not spend time on luxuries such as music.

There are many policy issues that affect families in today’s society. Hunger is a hidden epidemic and one major issue that American’s still face. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. This paper will explore the differing perspectives of the concerned camp, sanguine camp, and impatient camp. In addition, each camps view, policy agenda, and values that underlie their argument on hunger will be discussed.
This world and its beliefs provide Billy with a way to escape the mental prison of his mind where even the sound of sirens caused him great distress. Out of the three wonderful narratives given, the best one is “Stepping Into the Light” by Tanya Savory. While “Shame” by Dick Gregory is an interesting read, it is the weakest out of the bunch. The story had no clear setting, to many extra details, and a lengthy exposition. “I Became Her Target” by Roger Wilkins was a better executed story, even though it still had some flaws. This piece lacks any figurative language, but it was to the point and had clear organization. Thus, Tanya Savory’s piece was the best. It was easy to follow, used a constant symbol, and used some stories from others to make her point. So using narrative styles and elements in the best way, Tanya Savory wrote the better story.
The first moment music is introduced in the story is while the narrator is teaching at school. He has just learned of his brother arrest. He overhears a schoolboy whistling and it drowns out the “mocking and insular laughter of the other boys” (44). The narrator listens and is, for a moment, reminded of the fate that could meet his students; the same fate that met Sonny. He describes the whistling as “pouring out of him as though he were a bird” (44). It is innocent, pure, and drowns out the bitterness of his peers. It is reminiscent of a much younger Sonny. A Sonny that is still hopeful and still believes he can escape the demons that lurk in Harlem. The young schoolboy is creating this music to avoid and protect him from the dangers of his life, much like the way Sonny did in his younger years when he was playing for his life on Isabel’s piano.
At the end of “Into the Wild” by John Krakauer epilogue, my view towards McCandless’s journey and death is emotionally similar to McCandless’s parents as they accept Chris’s death. Chris’s parents weren’t really involved in his life so they never really knew why he cut everyone off. My initial guess is that Chris got tired of his parents controlling his life and just wanted to get away. Throughout “Into The Wild” Chris’s parents seemed like they didn’t support or care about Chris, or they didn’t know how to show it, however my opinion about Chris’s parents did change because the author shined light on his parents and how they came to senses with their son’s death and that they actually really did care about their son Chris McCandless.
To begin, it is evident today that teenagers love being connected with their friends and family all at the tip of their thumbs. They love texting. According to a study by Amanda Lenhart, 88 percent of teens use a cell phone or smart phone of which 90 percent of them use text message. An average teen sends 30 texts per day. (Lenhart) As shown in this study, teens have easy access to text messaging. In her Ted talks called “Texting That Save Lives” and “The Heartbreaking Text That Inspired a Crisis Help Line,” Nancy Lublin talks about how she received disturbing text messages from young people that mentions how they’re being bullied, wanting to commit suicide, cutting themselves, and being raped by their father. She was exceedingly emotional when receiving these texts. She felt like she had to do something about it. So, with her knowledge about teens and the power of texting, Nancy Lublin created something that would help save these young kids’ lives, the Crisis Text Line. (“Texting”)(“Heartbreaking”)
The story's first encounter with music is after the narrator has learned of Sonny's arrest. He is thinking about the boys he teaches, and how they could all be "sucked under" (419) just as Sonny has been. He hears their laughter in the schoolyard and notes its "mocking and insular" quality, a noise made by disillusioned youth rather than the untainted, joyous sound one expects of children (410). It’s the place where some enslaved Africans were brought and transported during the Atlantic Slave Trade. The film showcased their location, migration, African spirituality, family and the role of African women.
Shel Silverstein is the author of a book of poems called Light in the Attic. And out of the tens of poems that Silverstein features in this book, “Monster’s I’ve Met” is one of them. The poem, like all the poems in the book, is for an audience of younger children. Several of the poems that he has written in the book are considered as silly to kids, as they are supposed to be. But, a majority of the poems contain themes that promote behavior that is not encouraged in children. Specifically to “Monster’s I’ve met”, the theme that Silverstein displays in the poem influences parents and teachers to challenge that children cannot be able to read the poem. Through the various components of the poem, Shel Silverstein introduces the concept of monsters and uses it to depict the narrator’s thoughts as disturbing with his unusual interest in them.
Margaret Atwood’s “Happy Endings” is an Author’s telling of societal beliefs that encompass the stereotypical gender roles and the pursuit of love in the middle class with dreams of romance and marriage. Atwood writes about the predictable ways in which many life stories are concluded for the middle class; talking about the typical everyday existence of the average, ordinary person and how they live their lives. Atwood provides the framework for several possibilities regarding her characters’ lives and how each character eventually completes their life with their respective “happy ending”.
In the novella the Breathing Method by Stephen King, the character David Adley is telling the story of his first time going to this club. At this club located at 249B East Thirty-fifth Street there are a lot of unusual happenings; unusual people, places and objects which are unrealistic. David witnesses the decapitation of Sandra Stansfield and the birth of her child because this experience of trauma he creates a fictitious world to cope, in this world he imagines he goes to the club to escape but he can never truly escape and is reminded in his own happy place what has happened to Sandra.
In Sophie's World, Jostein Gaarder teaches philosophy and it explains basic philosophical ideas better than any other reading book or textbook that I have ever read. The many philosophical lessons of the diversified thinkers of their own time were dexterously understood. The author has a wonderful knack for finding the heart of a concept and placing it on display. For example, he metamorphoses Democritus' atoms into Lego bricks and in a stroke makes the classical conception of the atom dexterously attainable. He relates all the abstract concepts about the world and what is real with straightforward everyday things that everyone can relate to which makes this whole philosophy course manageable. ''The best way of approaching philosophy is to ask a few philosophical questions: How was the world created? Is there any will or meaning behind what happens? Is there a life after death? How can we answer these questions? And most important, how ought we to live?'' (Gaarder, Jostein 15).
