Throughout the history of America, the citizens have banded together into a society to solve problems, to help the nation grow by being socially responsible. Social responsibility is defined in many ways, for instance, many people define social responsibility as doing activities that benefit society and help it grow, but is that really true? People go along with their daily lives doing the same things they do everyday for themselves, but really they should go beyond what they do in order to help others. The children of the citizens of America will eventually decide the future and it is best when the parents prepare them about how to be socially responsible. In Roselyn Polk’s essay on social responsibility, she explains,”When we ‘offer adolescents’ participatory experiences that are meaningful, we allow them to discover their potency, assess their responsibility, acquire a sense of political processes, and commit to a moral-ethical ideology,”(Polk 1). When children learn to interact in activities that show that they have meaning, they will try to help more in the community and other activities that will help the community grow and do what’s best for it. Letting children participate with certain programs, for example, joining the boy scouts or doing church missions will help them learn on how to be socially responsible. When children join programs like these, they learn on how to put others first instead of themselves in order for the people they are helping to live in a better society, and by learning to help other societies, they learn to help their own. Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said:“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Mr. Roosevelt was indicating that education is key to ensuring a positive future for our country. Years have passed since his presidency, and many can argue that America’s educational system has improved, but that still remains to be seen. While it is true that education has gotten more focus in recent years, as highlighted by the “No Child Left Behind Act,” it does not mean that the system is fully developed enough to aid all of America’s children. Now, the average American is just that: average. Children generally receive B’s and C’s, average grades, in school if they are lucky enough to be in a good school system. Literacy rates are lower than they seem, and not enough people are properly motivated to do well in school. Forms of entertainment and parental influence, which also play a large role in the development of children into successful, productive adults, are not where they should be with respects to education. Much more needs to be done to improve the educational system of the entire country. Preschool should be made mandatory to help individuals reach their full potential and achieve what only a minority of today’s society is currently capable of.
In a modern society where there are little responsibilities other than growing up, learning to support your family and future generations there does not seem to be anything that can be more important than that. Octavia Butler seems to dig deeper than just supporting the future generations. Butler demonstrates this with her novel Parable of the Sower, where the main character Lauren, a young woman with hyper-empathy, is growing up in a dystopian Los Angeles where society is in chaos. In the novel, I believe that Butler is emphasizing the importance of having both social and personal responsibility and that you cannot have one without the other.
Social responsibility deals with the moral belief that each individual has the job to leave a positive impact on society, and more importantly they must carry out what is expected of them by society. It is about being responsible for our behavior and being mindful of the effect our behavior have on others, our communities, and the environment as a whole. For a student, that could mean being respectful and caring towards other students. For an adult, this could denote paying taxes or driving at the required speed limit. Social responsibility is the ethical foundation and guiding principles we are to live by. This trickles down from organizations, to the individual level. It’s the duty of everyone to help in need. By doing so, helps keep the balance in our society as well as our ecosystem.
What is social responsibility? Social responsibility is an obligation to act in a way that benefits society at large, people can do this through working to help improve Earth’s sustainability through processes such as recycling, composting, and being polite to others. Thanking a police officer or veterans for their service, or confronting consequences and accepting them are just a few examples of social responsibility. Sadly, the vast majority of individuals are not socially responsible. We are often fueled by fear, and the fear of losing power is so devastating that we make irrational and socially irresponsible decisions. Then, when those individuals work in a business or group themselves into corporations, those corporations are not socially responsible either. I have made the following promises to myself about my individual and social responsibility: Be economically responsible, be socially friendly and be a good influence on others.

Personal responsibility may be perceived in many ways, but it is imperative to understand the relevance of why it must begin with our self. First, one will never develop an attitude of responsibility if they always look for others to complete their task. It is a necessity that one has personal discipline or their efforts to be responsible will prove to be fruitless. Second, being responsible yields great rewards and acting responsible is a clear sign of maturity. A responsible individual looks to no one but self and no matter what the outcome; they are willing to stand by their decisions. (Maltby 2009), “Personal responsibility is concerned with people taking individual accountability for their decisions and actions, together with the outcomes they create and their impacts on others.” (para.1)
Individual Social Responsibility is a moral belief where we as individuals, have a responsibility toward society. Being "socially responsible" is about all individuals behaving ethically and sensitively towards social, economic, and environmental issues. It is about being accountable for our actions and being conscious of the impact our actions have on others, our communities, and the environment. By taking an active participation in resolving some of the issues, we as individuals should all strive to set good examples by applying and adhering to socially responsible practices, such as improving the quality of lives for individuals and their families, volunteering energy and time towards improving and benefiting society. A big question asked amongst people sometimes is “Can a teenager make a difference, and if they do is it positive?” a lot of people just brush it off sometimes and think that because they’re young and don’t have the same experience as some older people, they are bound to make mistakes. This is not always the case, as some teens can make a difference, whether it be in large scale that affects the world or in a smaller scale affecting the community or society. There are a couple kids that have make a difference, although some of the things they have done might be greater compared to others, they still have made a difference in where they live and the people in their communities.
On June 9, 1965 Dickens was involved in the Staplehurst railway accident. He was travelling with Ellen Ternan, with whom he had a long standing affair, and her mother. They were all unhurt physically, but many people died in front of their eyes. Dickens even tried to help the injured so it was not surprising if the accident left serious consequences on him. In varsities, sagacious professors shall necessitate noble practices such as speak nicely, etiquette, manner, and politeness. Teachers in school also included in implementing moral values among youth. Carl Jung, popular psychologist, through his research has stated that youth are more attentive to acts rather than works. So, educationalists have to pursue success in educating youth through acts, for they are the future leaders of the world. Lastly, the teenagers themselves should take an action in changing their attitude and apply more good values in themselves. They can choose what they want to be in the future.
