Fulfillment in healthcare, as with any endeavor, is about managing hopes. Probably the group best equipped to deal with the changes wracking the profession today is new providers, who are not so weighed down by great expectations. Providers need an internal compass to navigate the changing landscape of our profession. I believe this is the key to coping with the stresses of contemporary healthcare: identifying what is important to you, what you believe in, what you will fight for, and finding a supportive team. Residency programs can help in providing this support; instilling professionalism early on and assessing it frequently throughout training. Introducing students to virtuous mentors and creating time to foster that meaning can make all the difference. Just as a patient needs a navigator on a new health concern; a freshman provider needs navigation in a new practice. I am open and flexible, and view weakness as a challenge. I find strength in learning new perspectives. I am always growing and learning and I want to share that passion with others, without judgment. I want to encourage people at all levels to continue to learn.
